Manipal Journal of Nursing and Health Sciences

For continued existence and survival, preterm infants depend on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The NICU is a sophisticated and technology-driven environment, and preterm infants experience enormous stress in an NICU environment. Even though NICU is actually required by preterm infants for their continued existence, it may end up being an inappropriate milieu. The presence of overwhelming stimuli, most potent being the continuous presence of noise, may have various effects on preterm infants. Regardless of the recommendations by various committees, investigators have found that noise levels in the NICUs have exceeded the recommendations. The objective of this review was …

Diffusion Of Innovations Of Videoconference Technology: An Instrumental Case Study Concerning Undergraduate Degree-Seeking Nontraditional Learners, Bruce G. Campbell

Theses and Dissertations

This applied dissertation is an instrumental case study based on diffusion of innovations theory designed to gather student opinions regarding videoconference (VC) technology use in facilitating courses to undergraduate degree-seeking nursing students. The author of diffusion of innovations theory, Rogers (2003), recommended that more qualitative studies be conducted in education. Rogers and Jain (1968) recommended these studies should be conducted from the aspect of “receivers of innovation diffusion” (p.1) to provide feedback instrumental to implementation of technological innovations in academe. Further, Rogers stated that multiple data points should be used during the process of trialing an innovation. Therefore, a current …

The Creation Of A Pacemaker Clinic At A Federally-Funded Patient-Centered Medical Home: A Quality Improvement Project, Tony Anno

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

It is common for clinicians to implant medical devices, such as permanent pacemakers and implantable defibrillators, for cardiac diseases. These medical devices require follow-up care at regular intervals to ensure proper device function and optimal outcomes. Currently, many individuals without insurance or financial resources lack access to recommended follow-up care after implantation of a cardiac device. The purpose of this project was to determine the number of individuals who have had a medical device implanted without insurance coverage over a 3-year period, and then to establish a clinic that provides this service. The standard of care and operating procedure for …

Through discussion with the community health system's administration, it was identified that their current nursing orientation program was not well structured or comprehensive. The nursing staff also reported dissatisfaction with the current program. Therefore, a Doctor of Nursing Practice project commenced to develop an evidence-based nursing orientation program for Registered Nurses (RN) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) at a community health system in Virginia. The Competency Outcomes Performance Assessment model guided development of the project through a comprehensive literature review to identify evidence-based data for competencies, learning strategies, and performance evaluations. This review highlighted the importance and benefits of nursing …

Factors Contributing To Loss Of Nursing Intellectual Capital, Vera Ligia Grover Jan 2015

Factors Contributing To Loss Of Nursing Intellectual Capital, Vera Ligia Grover

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

In a Level II trauma center, experienced nurses are retiring from nursing positions, which is causing an unstable workforce. According to the literature, there are not enough experienced nurses to mentor the new nurses. Evidence suggests that experienced nurses are associated with improved patient outcomes and that experienced nurse mentors can improve the work environment for less experienced nurses. Focusing on Watson's theoretical framework of caring and Covell's theoretical framework of intellectual capital, this phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of a small group of nurses. Five nurses with 15 years of experience and who had served as mentors were …

Improving Attitudes And Perceptions About Teamwork Among Health Care Professionals With A Teamstepps Approach, Tetsuya Umebayashi Jan 2015

Improving Attitudes And Perceptions About Teamwork Among Health Care Professionals With A Teamstepps Approach, Tetsuya Umebayashi

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Effective communication among health care professionals is essential for the provision of quality patient-centered care; however, effective communication practices are not guided by evidence-based models in many health care organizations. The Joint Commission has estimated that most sentinel events are induced by miscommunication among health care professionals. The problem addressed in this project was poor and ineffective teamwork skills and general communication among health care professionals and a lack of formal models to guide effective communication among the healthcare team. The purpose of the project was to adapt TeamSTEPPS to an institutional context in order to improve health care team …

A Staff Development Program: Diabetes And Tb Education And Screening, Relyndo Manalo Salcedo Jan 2015

A Staff Development Program: Diabetes And Tb Education And Screening, Relyndo Manalo Salcedo

Nurses Knowledge, Skills, And Attitude Toward Electronic Health Records (Ehr), Sharon L. Adams Jan 2015

Nurses Knowledge, Skills, And Attitude Toward Electronic Health Records (Ehr), Sharon L. Adams

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Information technology (IT) has been rapidly integrated into the healthcare industry, including nursing, and has the ability to reduce errors, cut cost, and enhance patient care. However, approximately 45% of the current nurse workforce lacks adequate training in computer skills, which may hinder the adoption of health-related IT in the workplace. Characteristics of Rogers's diffusion of innovation (relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, and observability) guided this project. This project was conducted to address the problem of IT adoption on a local level and was designed to assess whether simulation training on a generic electronic health record (EHR) system would improve …

Obesity Surveillance In Childhood, Jessica Garcia Jan 2015

Obesity Surveillance In Childhood, Jessica Garcia

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Current practice behaviors for obesity management have remained refractory. Research has shown that lack of time and poor training/skills by primary care providers has led to poor or absent obesity counseling in practice. The purpose of this intervention was to facilitate obesity counseling in a pediatric office by using an evidence-based model called the 5As model of behavioral change. Lewin's change theory was the framework for this project to help clinicians transition their practice to include the 5As model in practice. The project consisted of a 30-minute power point presentation that included 2 case samples demonstrating how the 5As would …
