Nativity And English Language Use In Relation To Undiagnosed And Diagnosed Diabetes In U.S. Adults, Aliya Kuerban Phd, Fnp-Bc, Ms, Ma, Rn
Nursing: Faculty Presentations
Introduction and Objective: Diabetes detection varies across demographic and immigration-related groups. Foreign-born adults and individuals with limited English proficiency may be less likely to have diabetes identified, even when the disease is present. This study examined demographic, socioeconomic, and immigration-related correlates of undiagnosed and diagnosed diabetes among U.S. adults.
Methods: Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2011-2023) were analyzed using survey-weighted multinomial logistic regression. Diabetes status was categorized as no diabetes, undiagnosed diabetes, or diagnosed diabetes based on self-report and laboratory criteria. Models sequentially adjusted for age, sex, race/ethnicity, nativity, English language use, income, and education. …

Spreading Awareness To College Athletes About Skin Cancer And Improving Sun Protection Habits, Baylee B. Whiteside
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Introduction: The intention of this Doctor of Nursing Practice evidence-based project was to provide education on improving awareness of skin cancer to potentially improve sun protection habits. A total of 100 college athletes participated in this project. The goal was to increase educational knowledge and practice intentional sun protection habits.
Background: One in 5 people will develop a type of skin cancer by age 70 (Skin Cancer Foundation, 2024). Several studies have proven that young adults, ages 15-25, are at an increased risk of sun exposure due to decreased knowledge about skin cancer. Teaching and improving the knowledge in this …

Storytelling and Simulation-Based Experiences (SBEs) offer a powerful, equity-minded approach to teaching population health. Drawing on the NLN Jeffries Simulation Theory, Kolb’s experiential learning model, and the AACN 2021 Essentials, this session presents a SBE that integrates narrative design to immerse learners in community-centered care through a simulated Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) waiting room experience.
This SBE places students in a crowded FQHC waiting room to explore cultural humility, empathy, and health promotion in underserved settings. After the prebrief establishing purpose and psychological safety, students enter a conference room transformed with tight seating, limited walking space, and ambient noise. …
Artificial Intelligence And Mental Health: Promise, Pitfalls And Ethical Priorities, Maharaj Singh
Artificial Intelligence And Mental Health: Promise, Pitfalls And Ethical Priorities, Maharaj Singh
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Mental health conditions are prevalent across the lifespan, yet workforce shortages, long waiting times, and fragmented systems mean many people never receive timely, evidence‑based care. Artificial intelligence (AI), including machine‑learning classifiers and large language models (LLMs), is being explored to support earlier detection, closer symptom monitoring and scalable psychoeducation. Early studies suggest AI can surface risk signals from language, sleep/activity traces and clinical notes; summarise complex records for clinicians; and deliver structured self‑help at scale. At the same time, safety, bias, privacy and accountability concerns remain salient.

Purpose: To determine the association between adult tobacco/nicotine product use over time and residence location (urban, suburban, town, rural), controlling for demographics.
Methods: Data from Waves 4–7 (2016–2023) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study (N = 18,590 adults) were analyzed using survey-weighted logistic regression to evaluate location and time differences in likelihoods of current, daily, and established use of combustible tobacco, electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), smokeless products, and poly use (≥2 products).
Findings: Compared to those residing in urban locations, suburban residents were less likely to report current (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) …
Integrating Brief Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Into Telepsychiatry: A Professional Development Model For Pmhnps, Catherine A. Roberts
Integrating Brief Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Into Telepsychiatry: A Professional Development Model For Pmhnps, Catherine A. Roberts
DNP Scholarly Projects
Background: Mental illnesses remain among the most prevalent health conditions in the United States, affecting approximately 23% or nearly one in five adults in 2025 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2025); National Institute of Mental Health [NIMH], 2024a). Despite this high prevalence, only 50.6% of adults living with mental health disorders receive treatment (NIMH, 2024a); although the expansion of telepsychiatry has improved access to mental healthcare, medication-management visits are frequently brief and primarily focused on pharmacotherapy thereby limiting opportunities for delivery of psychotherapeutic interventions. This limitation highlights the need for structured, evidence-based psychotherapeutic approaches that can be …
A Quality Improvement Initiative To Reduce Pressure Ulcers In Spinal Cord Injury Patients, Nicholas Post
A Quality Improvement Initiative To Reduce Pressure Ulcers In Spinal Cord Injury Patients, Nicholas Post
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background: Pressure ulcers are a significant concern for hospitalized patients, leading to various complications and increased medical costs. Despite common preventative interventions, pressure ulcer rates remain elevated. The prevalence of pressure ulcers contributes to patient suffering, extended hospital stays, increased healthcare expenses, and even fatalities. This emphasizes the critical need for additional prevention strategies. The reported increase in pressure ulcer injuries among spinal cord injury patients in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), along with 7E and 8NE step-down units, at a large academic hospital highlights the pressing issue.
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to develop and …

Improving Antibiotic Prescribing For Urinary Tract Infections In Urgent Care Centers, Alexis Alastanos
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common infections that require antibiotic therapy. Providers working in three urgent care clinics located in Eastern West Virginia diagnosis and treat UTIs based on their clinical judgement. Variability in clinical judgement results in inappropriate antibiotic use which has implications on antibiotic resistance and the financial burden of the patients as well as the entire organization.
Evidence Review: A total of 10 articles were evaluated to support the implementation of antibiotic stewardship initiatives that provide guidance in caring for this population. Interventions include electronic health record enhancements, provider education, and tracking …
Guideline For A Burnout Bundle For Nurses In Psychiatric Mental Health Units, Festus Irabor
Guideline For A Burnout Bundle For Nurses In Psychiatric Mental Health Units, Festus Irabor
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive
Abstract
Problem: Burnout among nurses, especially in psychiatric mental health units, significantly impacts both their well-being and the quality of patient care. Despite its severity, with approximately 30% of nurses worldwide affected and contributing to a 31.5% nurse turnover rate (Ge et al., 2023), there are limited formal guidelines specifically targeting nurse burnout prevention in the mental health setting. The issue is particularly acute in the United States, where 91.1% of psychiatric nurses report experiencing burnout, compared to 79.9% of other healthcare professionals (Anger et al., 2024). In the local unit 38.05% have experienced burnout.
Purpose: The PICOTS for this …
