Descriptions Of Breast Self-Care From Inner-City African American And Hispanic Women Seeking Care In A Comprehensive Breast Care Center, Salamata Yoda
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background: A plethora of inquiries has irrefutably revealed a decline in the death rates of breast cancer in some ethnic populations due to timely diagnoses, and enhancement in treatment measures. However, not all women have gained equal access to these innovations in healthcare. Certainly, as a repercussion of the noted disparity, the overall breast cancer prevalence among African American and Hispanic women has steadily escalated. Although no single test can detect all breast cancers early, practicing breast self-care consisting of breast self-awareness (BSA) in combination with other screening methods such as clinical breast exam (CBE), mammogram screening, and a suitable …

Patient Engagement, Involvement, Or Participation -- Entrapping Concepts In Nurse-Patient Interactions: A Critical Discussion, Teresa Jerofke-Owen, Georgia Tobiano, Ann C. Eldh
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
The importance of patients taking an active role in their healthcare is recognized internationally, to improve safety and effectiveness in practice. There is still, however, some ambiguity about the conceptualization of that patient role; it is referred to interchangeably in the literature as engagement, involvement, and participation. The aim of this discussion paper is to examine and conceptualize the concepts of patient engagement, involvement, and participation within healthcare, particularly nursing. The concepts were found to have semantic differences and similarities, although, from a nursing perspective, they can be summoned to illustrate the establishment of a mutual partnership between a patient …

Improving Access For Medicare Inpatient Psychiatric Patients: A Health Policy Analysis, Malinda B. Whitfield
Improving Access For Medicare Inpatient Psychiatric Patients: A Health Policy Analysis, Malinda B. Whitfield
Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Projects, 2020-current
The Medicare Inpatient Psychiatric Services (IPS) policy, originally developed in the 1960s and without any significant or meaningful updates since the 1980’s, is physician specific, does not reflect the current model of care for psychiatric inpatients, and is restrictive for psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) practice. The policy is complex, consists of outdated regulations, and results in millions of dollars in compliance costs for Inpatient Psychiatric Facilities (IPFs) annually (NABH, 2019). Although clearly an important part of the inpatient psychiatric services team, PMHNPs are not identified or defined in the policy (Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services [CMS], 2019). …
Assessment Of Caregiver Burden In A Memory Loss Clinic, Andrea Perkins
Assessment Of Caregiver Burden In A Memory Loss Clinic, Andrea Perkins
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: Over 131,000 people in Illinois identify themselves as caregivers of someone with memory loss. The family caregiver may provide care including, but not limited to, assistance with activities of daily living, financial responsibilities, behavior management, and scheduling, and transportation to medical appointments. The care provided by the caregivers may lead to caregiver burden symptoms of depression, anxiety, and perceived stress. Purpose: Health care providers at a central Illinois memory clinic are not currently completing formal assessments of caregiver burden. This quality improvement project was done to determine if the current memory loss program services provide enough support …
Formal Caregiver Burden Among Nursing Assistants In Nursing Homes: A Mixed Methods Study, Rachel Kunkle
Formal Caregiver Burden Among Nursing Assistants In Nursing Homes: A Mixed Methods Study, Rachel Kunkle
Theses & Dissertations
Formal caregivers are the direct care workforce in nursing homes that aid residents. Providing care to residents is hazardous and demanding, as highlighted during the pandemic. Caregiver burden affects formal caregivers; however, is interchanged with caregiver stress and caregiver burnout. The overall purpose of this dissertation was to describe formal caregiver burden among nursing assistants who provide direct care to residents in nursing homes. This was first accomplished by conducting a concept analysis of formal caregiver burden in nursing homes. Next, an integrative review of the literature was performed to assess formal caregiver burden in nursing homes and available psychometric …

Impact Of Montessori-Based Dementia Programming On Engagement And Affect Of Older Adults With Dementia, Meredith S. Sheppard
Master's Projects and Capstones
The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted the Adult Day Services program and Adult Day programs across the country. As the Adult Day Services program transitions to an in-person format, goals within the organization include developing appropriate programming, increasing group size, and keeping clients entertained. The framework guiding this quality improvement project is Montessori-Based Dementia Programming ® (MBDP). This project aims to increase client engagement, decrease client anxiety, and decrease staff workload. This will be measured by a self-developed staff workload survey, the Menorah-Park Engagement, and the Affect rating scale. Implementation of MBDP at the Adult Day Center did not meet …

Methods: In this QI project, the intervention will be a one-time ZOOM® meeting between nurse leaders and participating church members. The nurse leader will present the 5 Wishes curriculum and lead a question-and-answer portion at the end of the ZOOM® meeting. Participants will be asked to complete a short …
The Mediating Effect Of Caregiving Relationship Quality On The Association Between Caregiving Stressors And Mental Health Problems Among Older Spousal Caregivers, Fei Wang, Elliane Irani
The Mediating Effect Of Caregiving Relationship Quality On The Association Between Caregiving Stressors And Mental Health Problems Among Older Spousal Caregivers, Fei Wang, Elliane Irani
Faculty Scholarship
Providing care to a spouse can be especially challenging for older adults given their compounding stressors resulting from aging and caregiving. This cross-sectional study examines the relationships between caregiving stressors and caregiver mental health problems and the potential mediator (i.e., caregiving relationship quality) of these associations. A total of 431 Americans (≥65 years) were selected from the National Study of Caregiving. Path analysis shows that care assistance was positively associated with caregiver mental health problems, and this association was mediated by negative relationship quality (Indirect effect =.14, p =.016). Moreover, role overload was positively associated with caregiver mental health problems, …

Nursing Students’ Perceptions Of Using Branching Simulation: A Qualitative Descriptive Study, Mohammad Rababa, Dania Bani-Hamad, Shatha Al-Sabbah
Nursing Students’ Perceptions Of Using Branching Simulation: A Qualitative Descriptive Study, Mohammad Rababa, Dania Bani-Hamad, Shatha Al-Sabbah
The Qualitative Report
Previous intervention studies have shown that branching simulation (BS) unfolds the complex multidimensional aspects of challenging health problems. The present study aimed to examine graduate nursing students’ perceptions of using BS in professional training. This study used a qualitative descriptive design with semi-structured interviews with a sample of 20 graduate nursing students. Four main themes emerged from the results: (a) BS as a support to students’ professional training, (b) BS leads to changes in clinical practice, (c) whether BS is a stressful learning experience, and (d) BS versus traditional lecturing. The participating students perceived BS as a valid learning tool …
Repositioning Patients To Prevent Pressure Ulcers, Janeth Covarrubias
Repositioning Patients To Prevent Pressure Ulcers, Janeth Covarrubias
Symposium of Student Scholars
The purpose of this project is to demonstrate whether alternating between the nurse and certified nurse aid (CNA) to reposition immobilized patient’s every two hours, as opposed to being repositioned solely by one person, will reduce pressure ulcer development.
Background: Nurses and CNAs work together to turn patient’s every 2 hours, but some patients have stated that they have not been turned all day; consequently, they’ve developed new pressure ulcers or are not healing from previous ones. Without interventions, patients are at risk for developing severe infections, lengthening their hospitalization, and increased pain levels.

Contextual Coding In Qualitative Research Involving Participants With Diverse Sociocultural Backgrounds, Ahtisham Younas, Angela Cuoco, Ercole Vellone, Sergi Fàbregues, Elsa Lucia Escalante Barrios, Angela Durante
Contextual Coding In Qualitative Research Involving Participants With Diverse Sociocultural Backgrounds, Ahtisham Younas, Angela Cuoco, Ercole Vellone, Sergi Fàbregues, Elsa Lucia Escalante Barrios, Angela Durante
The Qualitative Report
Understanding participants’ perspectives in qualitative research is contingent on unravelling the essential meaning of their speech. When data are collected in native language and translated into English language, the underlying sociocultural meaning of participants’ speech can be missed. This paper discusses a new contextual coding approach and illustrates its application in research. The technique was used in a phenomenological study in Pakistan and a mixed methods study in Europe. Contextual coding entails a preliminary coding stage involving data reading in native language, choosing socially and culturally relevant words and phrases, and developing preliminary codes. The concluding coding stage focuses on …

Impacting Rn Intent To Leave By Developing Emotional Intelligence In Frontline Nurse Leaders, Kristin W. Smith
Impacting Rn Intent To Leave By Developing Emotional Intelligence In Frontline Nurse Leaders, Kristin W. Smith
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Problem Statement: Registered Nurse (RN) turnover is defined as the frequency at which RNs leave the organization within a specified timeframe (Shimp, 2017). Turnover can correlate negatively to patient satisfaction and outcomes, mortality, and overall healthcare costs (Copanitsanou et al., 2017). Frontline leaders, especially those with high emotional intelligence (EI), can have a significant positive influence over RN turnover, yet there is little focus or standard approach on frontline leader EI development (Mansel & Einion, 2019).
Purpose: This DNP project aims to determine if providing professional development focused on emotional intelligence to frontline nursing leaders will impact RN intent to …

Empowering Emergency Department Nurses To Utilize The Steadi Program For Fall Prevention, Edmond M. Woods
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: A fall is defined as an event that results in a person coming to rest inadvertently on the ground, floor, or other lower levels (World Health Organization, 2022). Nationally the incidence of falls among older adults has steadily increased over the last ten years. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), "Falls among older adults aged 65 years and older caused over 34,000 deaths in 2019, making it the leading cause of injury contributing to death for that group" (CDC, 2019, para 1). These individuals who fall for the first time often have another fall unless …
Implementing The Use Of The Emergency Severity Index Triage Tool In Urgent Care, Sakeena Spencer
Implementing The Use Of The Emergency Severity Index Triage Tool In Urgent Care, Sakeena Spencer
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: The urgent care sector has quickly grown in the last decade. Patients who visit healthcare facilities seeking treatment for exacerbations of chronic conditions or episodic illnesses such as asthma without scheduled appointments receive healthcare services from Urgent Care Centers (UCC) or Emergency Departments (E.D.s). Upon visiting the UCC, these patients report life-threatening symptoms; hence require immediate medical attention. UCC healthcare workers should distinguish between non-acute and acute patients to prioritize providing healthcare to patients, ensuring they are not at risk for fatal outcomes. Using the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) triage tool while delivering healthcare services to these patients has …
