Perceptions Of Health Status Of Rural Elderly, Colleen Miller

Questionnaires were designed and administered to a nonrandom sample of 18 rural elderly residents in a midwestern state. The questionnaires obtained information which attempted to describe perceptions of current health status and self-care capability, to determine the relationship between perceptions of health status and type of residence or senior citizen center attendance. The dependent variables were definitions of perceived health status as derived from the Health Perceptions Questionnaire. Health status included factors of current health, prior health, health outlook, resistance to illness, health worry/concern and sickness orientation. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine the effects of reminiscence therapy on social interaction in a group of institutionalized elders. The researcher hypothesized that there would be no significant differences over time in social interactions as institutionalized elders participated in a reminiscence group. The sample was comprised of three elderly females in a nursing home in North Mississippi. The subjects were observed for behaviors indicating interaction during eight sessions. These sessions were conducted for 3 weeks and each one lasted approximately one hour. A trained observer recorded observations using the Social Interaction Tool. The data were submitted …

The purpose of this research study was to correlate k n owledge about diabetes to age. From a population of former clients of the diabetic unit at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, a sample of 21 individuals w e r e g i v e n the Assessment of Educational Needs of the Diabetic Patient Questionnaire. Age of subjects ranged from 25 to 83 years with a mean of 51.5 years. There were 13 (62%) males and 8 (38%) females. Educational levels varied from 5 to 16 years with a mean of 10 years. A quasi-experimental study was used to study the effect of plush animals on depression in elderly nursing home residents. The researcher hypothesized that there would be no significant difference between depression prior to and following plush animal therapy. Data were collected preand p o s t - p l u s h animal therapy using the Beck Depression Inventory. There were four subjects who each selected a plush animal, kept it with them for 5 weeks, and were then retested using the Beck Depression Inventory. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine the effects of game simulation on nursing home personnel's attitudes toward the elderly. Data were collected using the Elderly Person's Questionnaire pre- and post-game simulation. The hypothesis stated there would be no significant difference in the attitudes toward elders of nursing home personnel who participated in a game simulation program and nursing home personnel who did not participate in the program. This study was descriptive in nature, designed to identify differences in coping strategies of spouses of Alzheimer patients who are cared for at home . Data were collected using the Chronicity Impact and Coping Instrument: Spouse Questionnaire. The sample consisted of 14 subjects (3 males and 11 females) who met the criteria for the study. Subjects ranged in age from 60 to 86 years with an average age of 68.9 years. One Black and 13 Caucasians participated. To test the hypothesis, data were analyzed using percentiles. This quasi-experimental research study examined the effects of the aquatic exercise on self-concept in the elderly. The researcher hypothesized that there would be no significant difference in self-concept between elders who participated in an aquatic exercise program and elders who did not participate. A researcher-designed demographic data form and the Tennessee Self Concept Scale were used to collect pertinent data. A total of 22 subjects from two cities 30 miles apart participated in the study. This was a descriptive study designed to determine the relationship of functional impairment and self-concept of elderly clients with chronic illness. The null hypothesis stated that when the clients' scores on the Functional Assessment Form and Tennessee Self-Concept Scale were compared, there would be no significant correlation at the .05 significance level. Data were collected from 15 subjects who were 65 years of age or over, had a chronic illness, and were receiving the services of a home health agency.
