Process Evaluation On Crisis Services In Northern Idaho, Claudia G. Miewald Jan 2016

Process Evaluation On Crisis Services In Northern Idaho, Claudia G. Miewald

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Idaho ranks last of all states for per capita spending on mental health treatment (Kaiser Family Foundation, 2014). In Idaho, individuals in crisis who suffer from mental illness or Substance Use Disorder (SUD) have few options for care. They often utilize the most expensive treatment through the emergency department, inpatient services, or by going to jail. Idaho has the 7th highest suicide rate in the nation (Suicide Prevention Action Network of Idaho, 2015), while Region 1 of Idaho has the second highest suicide rate in the state from 2010-2014 (Suicide Prevention Action Network of Idaho, 2015).

Exploring The Influence Of Bc-Adm Certification On Advanced Practice Nurses’ Clinical Practice And Knowledge Of Cognitive Dysfunction In Geriatric Diabetes Care, Kimberley J. Krapek

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

To meet the healthcare demands of an aging population one strategy is the use of advanced practice nurses (APN) in primary care (Buerhaus, DesRoches, Dittus, & Donelan, 2015). Diabetes affects 26.9% of people aged 65 and older in the United States. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is often unrecognized in this population (Munshi, Hayes, Iwata, Lee &Weinger, 2012). Information on APN knowledge of this comorbidity or practice characteristics regarding cognitive function assessment is limited. This capstone project sought to increase understanding of APN practice and knowledge of MCI, comparing APNs board certified in advanced diabetes management (BC-ADM) to those without certification. …

Driving In Early-Stage Alzheimer’S Disease: An Integrative Review Of The Literature, Rebecca L. Davis, Jennifer M. Ohman Jan 2016

Driving In Early-Stage Alzheimer’S Disease: An Integrative Review Of The Literature, Rebecca L. Davis, Jennifer M. Ohman

Peer Reviewed Articles

One of the most difficult decisions for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is when to stop driving. Because driving is a fundamental activity linked to socialization, independent functioning, and wellbeing, making the decision to stop driving is not easy. Cognitive decline in older adults can lead to getting lost while driving, difficulty detecting and avoiding hazards, as well as increased errors while driving due to compromised judgment and difficulty in making decisions. The purpose of the current literature review was to synthesize evidence regarding how individuals with early-stage AD, their families, and providers make determinations about driving safety, interventions to …

Integrative Review Of Nurse-Delivered Community-Based Physical Activity Promotion, Elizabeth Richards, Y. Cai

School of Nursing Faculty Publications

Purpose: The purpose of this integrative review is to 1) describe intervention attributes, 2) describe the role of nurses in community PA promotion, and 3) describe the efficacy of the interventions in terms of PA behavior change. Methods: Computerized database and ancestry search strategies located distinct intervention trials between 1990 and 2015. Results: Thirteen national and international studies with 2,353 participants were reviewed. Multi-dose, face-to-face, group-based interventions with or without individual-based contacts for 6 months or less were the most common intervention delivery modes. Only 40% (n=5) of the studies integrated health behavior theory into intervention design. Less than half …

Implementation Of A Nurse Practitioner Residency Program In Critical Access Hospitals, Anna Ngwisah Bolima Jan 2016

Implementation Of A Nurse Practitioner Residency Program In Critical Access Hospitals, Anna Ngwisah Bolima

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Access to health care in rural communities is challenged by workforce shortages. Nurse practitioners (NPs) have been filling the gap created by physician migration into specialty areas. Flex hospital legislation allows critical access hospitals (CAHs) to staff the emergency department with NPs without on-site physicians. NP education often lacks emergency and trauma curriculum, resulting in gaps in practice expectations and significant role transition stress and turnover. The purpose of this project was to construct from the scholarly literature a transition-to-practice residency program to support NP's in providing emergency department care in the CAH. The limbo to legitimacy theory guided the …

Bedside Nurse Recognition Of Delirium In The Medical-Surgical Setting, Bridget Ann Denzik Jan 2016

Bedside Nurse Recognition Of Delirium In The Medical-Surgical Setting, Bridget Ann Denzik

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Delirium in adults aged 65 and older is a common occurrence in the acute care setting and is often unrecognized by bedside nurses. Delirium can trigger a negative cascade of events resulting in an increase in morbidity and mortality, functional decline, longer length of stay, and high rates of post hospital institutionalization and has a significant socioeconomic impact. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to establish a solid foundation using scholarly literature to support the development of a delirium prevention, recognition, and treatment program in the medical-surgical acute care setting applying the program logic framework. The goal was …

Do Call-Backs Help Patients Post Stroke, Taylor E. Clark

DNP Projects

Aim and Objective: To determine if the implementation of a post-discharge call-back intervention for patients discharged home from the hospital after stroke was associated with a decrease in 30-day readmissions and improved patient satisfaction.

Background: Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States (American Stroke Association, 2015). Several studies have examined various post-discharge interventions, including a call to the patient and/or family after their return home, to determine the benefit to patients, if any (Zolfaghari, Mousavifar, Pedram & Haghani (2012). Understanding and anticipating patient needs and removing barriers post-stroke may decrease readmission rates …

Beers Medication: Empowering The Elderly Through Education, Amanda J. Parker

DNP Projects

The elderly population (those aged 65 years and older) has an increased risk of experiencing adverse effects from their prescribed medications. These adverse effects are due to many reasons, one being changes that naturally occur in the aging body, such as diminished kidney function or decreased gastrointestinal motility. This project explores the prescribing practices of one primary care practice setting. Specifically, this project sought to determine the number of patients in a primary care practice who were prescribed medications on the Beers list and whether or not the patients received education on adverse effects. The results concluded the most frequently …

Organisational Barriers To Effective Pain Management Amongst Oncology Nurses In Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Alqahtani, Linda Katherine Jones, Eleanor Holroyd

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Cancer pain is a multi-dimensional syndrome with a combination of acute and chronic pain that causes physical, psycho-social, behavioural, emotional and spiritual problems resulting in adverse effects on patients’ quality of life. Nurses need to be well prepared with knowledge on pain assessment and management techniques in oncology units, due to their vital role in the decision-making process regarding pain management. However, limited research has been conducted regarding nurses’ barriers regarding pain management in oncology units, especially in Saudi Arabia. The overall aim of this study was to explore the nurses’ perceived barriers that hinder the delivery of effective pain …

Transitions To Assisted Living Within A Continuing Care Retirement Community, Judith H. Scott

Dissertations

Purpose/Aims: The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of older single women who moved from their independent homes to the assisted living setting, both situated within a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC).

Rationale: Anecdotally, CCRC transitions have been viewed as either one dreaded possible step toward the end of life or a supportive place to open a new chapter in older adults’ lives. However, no studies have actually examined this experience among older single women, who comprise a large proportion of people making this transition.

Background: Older adults move to assisted living within a CCRC when …

Assessing The Psychoeducational Approach To Transcendence And Health (Path) Program : An Intervention To Foster Self-Transcendence And Well-Being In Community-Dwelling Older Adults., Valerie Lander Mccarthy, Sharon Bowland, Lynne A. Hall, Jennifer Connelly

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

The late-life developmental process of self-transcendence shapes elders’ perspectives on self, others, the nature of this world, and of a dimension beyond the here and now. This qualitative pilot study evaluated the Psychoeducational Approach to Transcendence and Health (PATH) Program, a psychoeducational intervention to promote self-transcendence and well-being in community-dwelling women at a senior center. The intervention involved eight weekly group sessions using group processes, mindfulness practices, creative experiences, and independent at-home practice. The findings supported the underlying theory-based structure and content of the intervention and indicated the intervention may empower elders to attend to self-care, develop acceptance, and learn …

Engaging Older Adults To Build Social Capital, Beverly K. Lunsford, Danielle Janes

Nursing Faculty Publications

Countries are considering the healthcare implications as the proportion of older adults increases, including rising healthcare costs and resources needed as more adults want to "age in place" or continue living in the community. More in home resources and support services will be needed for older adults to continue living independently at homes. Older adults are an incredibly untapped resource with a continuing need to contribute to society and a willingness to help others. Older adults are working longer than ever before, so they have the potential to build their own social capital for meeting the needs of aging colleagues. …
