Enhancing The Well-Being Of Older Adults And Young Adults With Developmental Disabilities Through Participation In An Intergenerational Community Garden: Participatory Action Research, Diane L. Keen

Doctorate of Nursing Science Dissertations

The purpose of this Participatory Action Research (PAR) study was to discover ways to enhance well-being in young adults with DD and older adults in the Oak Grove community. This dissertation details how PAR was used in the Oak Grove community to identify ways to enhance purpose and meaningful activity for older adults while developing positive relationships with younger adults with DD through qualitative methods.

Ryff and Keyes (1995) discovered that although some elements of well-being remain stable as a person ages, purpose-in-life drops significantly in older adults. In addition, young adults with developmental disabilities (DD) lack meaningful relationships, which …

A Descriptive Study Of The Elderly In California Substance Abuse Treatment Programs, David Berenschot Jun 2017

A Descriptive Study Of The Elderly In California Substance Abuse Treatment Programs, David Berenschot

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

As gerontologists may know, there are a great deal of studies and a variety of academic literature on the misuse of alcohol and prescription medication amongst the elderly population. While there is a plethora of information on alcohol and prescription misuse, there is little reported data about the prevalence of other substance misuse experienced by this population. This study aims to help to fill that gap in the data by using quantitative methods to describe the scope of substance abuse of individuals 55-years or older. This study utilizes data from the Treatment Data Set Admission (TEDS-A). The TEDS-A is a …

Fall Prevention: Responder 5 Bed Connectors, Ani Tatevossian

Master's Projects and Capstones

This paper explores falls, a sentinel event plaguing hospitals in the United States and internationally. Falls are a major contributor to negative patient outcomes and a source of financial strain for hospitals. One particular fall prevention intervention, Responder 5 bed alarms, was explored. A literature review on falls was conducted to study the effectiveness of bed alarms. Capezuti et al. (2009) found bed alarms to be error prone and stress the importance of patient risk factor assessment and using bed alarms as a multifactorial approach to fall prevention. Shorr et al. (2012) came to a similar conclusion after conducting a …

Alzheimer’S Disease And The Impact Of Music Therapy A Systematic Literature Review, Hayley Guess May 2017

Alzheimer’S Disease And The Impact Of Music Therapy A Systematic Literature Review, Hayley Guess

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Currently ranked as the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has become the most prevalent form of dementia, a term commonly associated with memory loss and other progressive cognitive deficits that compromise patients’ lives. What may begin as a mindlessly misplaced object or momentary inability to recall newly learned information will eventually advance to a loss of personal identity, forgotten loved ones, and utter misperception of reality. Although a cure for AD has yet to be discovered, there are several non-pharmacological treatments that can improve patients’ quality of life and provide temporary relief from …

Provider Based Interventions To Mitigate Risk For Opioid Pain Medication Abuse Among Adult Patients In A Primary Care Setting, Sheree Lamara Conley-Donaldson

Doctoral Projects

Mental and substance use disorders are predicted to exceed all physical disease processes causing major disability by 2020. Misuse and overdose of opioid pain medications is a significant public health concern in the United States. Approximately 1 in 4 patients receiving prescription opioids in primary care settings struggle with misuse. Half of all opioid prescriptions are written by primary care providers, including nurse practitioners. The purpose of this DNP project was to determine if nurse practitioner providers are implementing evidence-based practice guidelines including screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) to mitigate risk of prescription opioid pain medication misuse …

Utilizing Tranexamic Acid To Reduce Blood Transfusion In Hip Fractures, Katherine Balzano-Cowan, Morgan Guerrette

Nurse Anesthesia MSNA Student Capstones

Minimizing perioperative blood loss during orthopedic surgery has proven challenging for providers. Perioperative utilization of antifibrinolytic pharmacologic interventions, such as tranexamic acid (TXA), has been demonstrated as a safe and effective technique for decreasing blood loss and allogenic blood transfusion rates. Currently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved on-label indications of TXA are for use in short-term treatment of hemophilia patients undergoing dental extractions and in management of patients experiencing menorrhagia (Mayeux, Alwon, Collins, & Hewer, 2016). Despite the current limited scope of FDA approval for TXA, use in elective surgery with otherwise clotting-uncompromised patients is not a new …

The Effects Of Pain On Informed Consent, Bryan Aja May 2017

The Effects Of Pain On Informed Consent, Bryan Aja

Nurse Anesthesia MSNA Student Capstones

It is common for providers to withhold pain medication as opposed to treating pain prior to obtaining informed consent due to the concern of invalid informed consent. Pain’s influence on cognition can significantly impact the cognitive domains required to obtain valid informed consent. Determining if a patient has the capacity or competence to participate in the informed consent process has medical, ethical, and legal implications. The medical use of competence and capacity is not equivalent to the legal use of the same terminology. Legal implications concerning consent include signing consent while in duress or pain, signing under the influence of …

Antimicrobial Stewardship: Incentives And Barriers To Implementation In Skilled Nursing Facilities, Gloria M. Escalona May 2017

Antimicrobial Stewardship: Incentives And Barriers To Implementation In Skilled Nursing Facilities, Gloria M. Escalona

Doctoral Projects

This study was part of a quality improvement effort of a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) to develop and establish an antimicrobial stewardship program to comply with recently enacted California State Senate Bill 361 (SB 361), which went into effect January l, 2017 (Skilled nursing facilities, 2015). The division of the facility into two sections, one staffed largely by Licensed Vocational Nurses (L VNs) and another staffed largely by Registered Nurses (RNs) provided an study opportunity that easily differentiated the licensed nurses. This study used three methods: 1) an educational intervention to licensed nurses, 2) a post-educational intervention survey of licensed …

Commuting Away: The Experiences Of Rns Who Live In Rural Communities And Commute Away For Employment In Non-Rural Communities, Laurie Jo Johansen Apr 2017

Commuting Away: The Experiences Of Rns Who Live In Rural Communities And Commute Away For Employment In Non-Rural Communities, Laurie Jo Johansen

Nursing Capstones

A lack of healthcare providers, including RNs, creates barriers for the U.S. rural population to access adequate healthcare services. One contributing factor to the scarcity in rural areas is the increasing numbers of RNs commuting away from rural communities for employment—14% in 1980 to 37% in 2004 (Skillman, Palazzo, Doescher, & Butterfield, 2012).

This descriptive phenomenology study investigated the experiences of RNs living in rural communities who commuted away to non-rural settings for employment. Purposeful sampling with snowballing was used to recruit 16 RNs for the study, allowing for understanding a rich variation in the professional experiences of RNs, as …

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

Background: Fall injury is a leading cause of death and disability among older adults (Alamgir, 2012). Fall injury may result in fractures, infection and fear of movement. By reinforcing engagement in muscles used during balance and walking, seniors may avoid unnecessary falls within their homes and the community.

Setting/Target Population: West Marin is the largest rural area of Marin County, California and includes seven unincorporated communities. A large percentage of the elderly population who reside in West Marin live alone--thus suffering from isolation. Within the rural, isolated communities of West Marin, the rate of falls among the elderly …

The Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner In Missouri: An Analysis Of Needs Assessment, Jessica L. Mann

Dissertations

Introduction: Due to an increasing number of acutely ill pediatric patients and changing healthcare demands, there is an even greater need for nurse practitioners (NPs) to work in the area of pediatric acute care (AC). There is a lack of alignment of education and certification with the scope of practice of the AC Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP). The development and implementation of a graduate level AC PNP program in Missouri will support the alignment of education, clinical training, and certification with the scope of practice of the AC PNP and improve access to a quality program for nurses that currently …

The Lived Experience Of Relationship Transition In Significant Others Caring For A Partner With Younger Onset Dementia, Diane Peyser

Theses & Dissertations

Background

Approximately 5% of dementia sufferers are individuals younger than age 65. The majority of studies have focused on individuals with late-onset dementia. The limited studies conducted on caregivers of younger onset dementia individuals identify that they have a different set of needs based upon their unique experiences. Significant others such as spouses frequently fulfill the role of caregiver for a partner with younger onset dementia. Little is known about the lived experience of significant others caring for a partner with younger onset dementia in the context of relationship transition that occurs in this dynamic situation. This study illustrates the …

Investigating Personality Traits Of Registered Nurses: Implications For Personnel Evaluation, Stephanie N. Means

Dissertations

The United States is currently facing a registered nurse (RN) shortage that is expected to reach the millions in the next few years. Since the beginning of the century, healthcare professionals and administrators have strived to develop and implement ways to increase recruitment and retention in the nursing field. It has been recognized that the key to recruitment and retention is to get the right nurse in the right place, which means focusing on clinical proficiencies as well as personality qualities and characteristics. Personality assessment has long been used to evaluate person-job (P-J) fit of applicants for positions across the …

HIV/AIDS scourge remains high in most countries of sub-Saharan Africa such as Nigeria, which is home to about 3.3 million HIV positive individuals and represents the second largest burden of HIV/AIDS care, treatment and demand worldwide after South Africa. Anti-retroviral treatment options though a welcome development, has increased the number of people living with this chronic illness, and most of them depend on family members for physical and emotional support. Traditional gender norms in Nigeria ensure that legitimately, women and girls are the first options for caregiving roles. This mandatory role has in turn imposed psychosocial disruption in the lives …

Cognitive Impairment And Music Therapy, Sanjib Dey, Anne Lee Mar 2017

Cognitive Impairment And Music Therapy, Sanjib Dey, Anne Lee

Discovery Day (formerly Post & Beyond)

Cognitive impairment has been found to be a key variable in the overall impact on physical and mental health in the elderly. Cognitive impairment has also been found to have a significant impact on mobility, depression and social isolation. This study will examine if patient engagement in music therapy (MT) has a greater effect on increased cognitive function; specifically improvement in short term memory than engagement in physical activity alone in residents residing in nursing homes. Music has been found to enhance autobiographic memories, emotion(s), cognitive stimulation and learning, physical improvement as well as increasing social interaction. Physical activity has …
