Nursing: School of Nursing Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Flavor Perception Game was designed with the goals of developing an interactive and hands-on activity, providing a platform to review chemical senses of the five tastes, promoting student investment in the course material, and providing a basis for discussion on chemical senses of the five tastes. Knowledge of taste sensation is useful for nursing and exercise sciences students, as human physiology is integral to both baccalaureate curricula. The game is inexpensive, easy to incorporate into a 50-minute lecture period, and free of chocolate allergens. Student participants (N=34) tasted three candies and completed a voluntary anonymous poll regarding their detection …

"Flipping the classroom" is gaining in popularity. The flipped classroom permits active learning and student engagement whereby the traditional class time is transformed into an active learning experience in which students can apply knowledge and interact with their peers and perform "hands-on" activities. This descriptive phenomenological study focused on the lived experiences of nursing faculty implementing a flipped classroom into the medical/surgical curriculum. The faculty's experience with implementing and adapting to non-traditional teaching learning methods of the "flipped"classroom in their medical/surgical classes is shared. The themes expressed by faculty are presented in the two overall categories of: Faculty concerns and …

Nurse educators must explore innovative ways to engage students and stimulate learning. Student response system (SRS) technology is one tool educators can use to increase participation, provide immediate feedback, and encourage critical thinking. This study evaluated perceptions of first-year nursing students using SRS technology. The findings support the use of SRS technology as a positive pedagogical approach to incorporate in teaching associate degree nursing students.

The Use Of Audience Response Systems In Nursing Education: Best Practice Guidelines, Nicole Mareno, Marie Bremner, Christie Emerson

Faculty Articles

The use of Audience Response Systems (ARS) or 'clickers' as an active learning strategy in nursing education has been steadily on the rise. ARS technology allows the dynamic engagement of students in the classroom by providing immediate two-way communication between faculty and students. ARS can be used to explore knowledge and common misconceptions, act as a springboard for classroom discussions, and can be used for testing or evaluation. The aim of this paper is to present best practice guidelines for both novice and experienced ARS technology users. A summary of the state of the research in this area will be …
