The Influence Of Western Music And The Wind Band In The Republic Of Korea, Mark Reimer May 2024

The Influence Of Western Music And The Wind Band In The Republic Of Korea, Mark Reimer

Journal of Global Awareness

Beginning with the arrival of American missionaries in 1885, the music of South Korea continues to reflect Western tonality, aesthetics, education, and popular taste. Through this musical and historical evolution, however, the country has not forsaken its traditions, musical imprint, and cultural identity, as will be discussed in the examination of select composers and music compositions.

Impressionism In The Hands Of Griffes, Bauer, And Howe, And The Musical Climate In Early 20th-Century America, Elaine Sara Lim May 2024

Impressionism In The Hands Of Griffes, Bauer, And Howe, And The Musical Climate In Early 20th-Century America, Elaine Sara Lim

Dissertations, 2020-current

American composers Charles Griffes (1884-1920), Marion Bauer (1882-1955), and Mary Howe (1882-1964) are considered “Impressionist” composers by some scholars. This document will explore selected piano works of each composer to determine the extent to which impressionistic traits are present. Topics such as tonality, harmony, texture, and individual style will be examined, as well as the significant relationship between music and poetry. American Impressionism was short-lived but served as a link to Modernism, as all three composers eventually experimented with other styles. Early 20th-century American audiences, accustomed to the influx of European artists and music, were slow to embrace the new …

Native American Choral Music: Strategies For Celebrating And Incorporating Music Of Indigenous People, Mary Ruth Young May 2024

Native American Choral Music: Strategies For Celebrating And Incorporating Music Of Indigenous People, Mary Ruth Young

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

*Language usage is fluid and evolving, representing past and present people groups. During my discussions with my Indigenous composer colleagues, I've found that they hold varying preferences regarding how they wish to be addressed and the terminology they prefer. Because of this, I use the terms Native, Native American, First Nations, Indigenous, American Indian, and First Peoples interchangeably.*

This document will discuss the historical exclusion of Native American music in the Western art forms, specifically the choral tradition, and provide solutions to incorporate it in modern choral performances. Considering first the wars, disease, displacement, colonization, and missionization, it is no …

“When White Men And Indians United Shall Praise:” Indigenous Inclusion In The Hartford Music Company, Savannah N. Skaggs Apr 2024

“When White Men And Indians United Shall Praise:” Indigenous Inclusion In The Hartford Music Company, Savannah N. Skaggs

ATU Scholars Symposium

The Hartford Music Company and Institute of Hartford, Arkansas has attracted increasing academic interest, particularly within the last twenty years. This southern gospel music publishing company and singing school based in southern Sebastian County published a collection of shape note hymnals which boasted some of the genre’s most prolific literature. Though a growing number of Arkansans are learning that these gospel staples came from their own hill country, many do not realize that several of these songs were premiered by or recorded by Indigenous people. While this may not initially seem particularly impactful, this genre developed its own distinct identity …

‘Is This Song A Rebel Song?’: Republican Legitimacy And The Contested Narratives Of The Irish Revolutionary Soundscape, Seán Ó Cadhla Mar 2024

‘Is This Song A Rebel Song?’: Republican Legitimacy And The Contested Narratives Of The Irish Revolutionary Soundscape, Seán Ó Cadhla

Articles

This article will demonstrate how the diverse body of musical narratives broadly collectivised as ‘Irish rebel songs’ exhibit multi-layered categorisation difficulties beyond those typically pertaining to the wider canon of traditional folksong. Due to the systemic, often febrile, contestation surrounding ideological legitimacy within the Irish national struggle, such texts must necessarily navigate multiple historico-political complexities, foremost of which is the dogmatically essentialised, yet organisationally splintered, tradition of physical-force Irish Republicanism. Such disputed ideological demarcations encourage a notable subjectivity in terms of how rebel songs are viewed from both musicological and political perspectives in Ireland to the present, a liminality reflected …

The Tradition Of Microtonal Guitar On The American West Coast, Kenneth M. Cotich Jan 2024

The Tradition Of Microtonal Guitar On The American West Coast, Kenneth M. Cotich

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Microtonal music in the United States has a significant connection with the American West Coast. Influential microtonal musicians and theorists originated on the West Coast or passed through California, subsequently inspiring future generations of composers to work outside of twelve-tone equal temperament (12tet). This project begins by examining the early trailblazers of music education and composition in California who sought to rearticulate the fundamentals of music. Two substantial sources that influenced new musical materials were the harmonic series and non-Western music and culture. Microtonal music in California is then examined through the efforts of a series of outsider speculative music …

“Sounds Like” Redemption? On The Musicality Of Species And The Species Of Musicality, Tyler Yamin, Alice Rudge Jan 2024

“Sounds Like” Redemption? On The Musicality Of Species And The Species Of Musicality, Tyler Yamin, Alice Rudge

Faculty Journal Articles

Popular and academic studies of music frequently claim that human musicality arose from the so-called ‘natural world’ of non-human species. And amid the anxieties produced by the Anthropocene, it is thought that the possibility of reconnecting with the natural world through a renewed appreciation of music’s links with nature may usher in a new era of posthuman environmental consciousness, offering repair and redemption. To critique these claims, we trace how notions of ‘musicality’ have been applied to or denied from non-human entities across diverse disciplines since the late nineteenth century. We conclude that such debates reinforce the separation that they …

Global Experiences: How Locality And Space Shape Pedagogical Practices And Experiences Between Western Institutions And Ghanaian Musical Centers, Andrew Patrick Simonette Jan 2024

Global Experiences: How Locality And Space Shape Pedagogical Practices And Experiences Between Western Institutions And Ghanaian Musical Centers, Andrew Patrick Simonette

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Pedagogical research on African music and dance practices have conventionally focused on ways in which styles and traditions are taught including, but not limited to, modes of transmission, curriculum structure, and cultural responsiveness. These investigations, and subsequent applications, have contributed towards a deeper understanding of pedagogical structures as related to cultural context and effective modes of teaching and learning African music. At the same time, the impact that space and locality play within African music and dance instruction, particularly as related to learning experiences have been largely overlooked. Locality and space involve several factors that range from elements attributed to …

Honk!: Meaning And Activism In 21st Century American Street Bands, Isaac Maupin Jan 2024

Honk!: Meaning And Activism In 21st Century American Street Bands, Isaac Maupin

Theses and Dissertations--Music

In this dissertation, I explore activism, music, and meaning through the lens of HONK! Bands in the United States. HONK! A Festival of Activist Street Bands began in Sommerville, Massachusetts, in 2006. Since its inception, the festivals have grown on a national and global scale. The festivals, however, operate as a convenient organizing structure for the bands themselves and are not a primary focus of this work. Instead, I examine activism, learning, and value as systems within the HONK! culture (each topic with a devoted chapter) to, through a phenomenological lens, better understand how HONK! bands fit within American culture. …

This dissertation investigates the musical and phenomenological aspects of Four Fragments of Time by Marcus Siqueira (b. 1974) and provides a performance guide for this work. Furthermore, this dissertation analyzes previous guitar works by the composer, seeking to understand Siqueira’s compositional idiosyncrasies and to provide context for the interpretation of Four Fragments of Time. This dissertation includes a biography of the composer, an analysis of the compositional process of Four Fragments of Time, an analysis of the recurrent idiomatic procedures in Siqueira’s guitar works, and an overview of the collaborative process between the composer and the author. Additionally, an analysis …

Mediating Authenticity: An Ethnographic Portrait Of Experience At U.S. Popular Music Festivals, Elizabeth Navarra Varnado Jan 2024

Mediating Authenticity: An Ethnographic Portrait Of Experience At U.S. Popular Music Festivals, Elizabeth Navarra Varnado

Theses and Dissertations--Music

This ethnographic study of U.S. popular music festivals subverts the impression of festivals as strictly ‘presentational’ live music events by utilizing a nuanced approach that is grounded in ethnographic fieldwork, historical analysis, and participant interviews.

Interlocutors, drawn from the author’s personal network of festival attendees, musicians, and promoters, reflect on “particularly positive festival moments,” the social and emotional benefits of festivals, and the corporeality of festival aesthetics. Discourse and published media play a vital role in festival participants’ perception of the festival field and their place within it; therefore, this study draws inspiration from the tripartite focus of iconic festival …

(Special Section, Hymns Beyond The Congregation Ii): Spiritual Concert-Fundraisers, Singing Conventions, And Cherokee Language Learning Academies: Vernacular Southern Hymnbooks In Noncongregational Settings, Jesse P. Karlsberg, Kaylina M. Crawley, Sara S. Hopkins

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

Noncongregational settings were integral to hymnody in the postbellum settler colonial context of the southern United States during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The incorporation of hymn singing into a wide range of noncongregational settings served Black, white, and Native populations in navigating unsettled racial dynamics during this period across the US South and its diasporas. This essay features three case studies examining hymn collections intended or repurposed for a range of noncongregational uses: spiritual collections connected with the performing ensembles of black institutions, a shape-note songbook that attempted to bridge singing convention and congregational contexts, and a …

Sounding Ethics: Musical Signification Of Moral Choices In Video Games, Hayden Mesnick Dec 2023

Sounding Ethics: Musical Signification Of Moral Choices In Video Games, Hayden Mesnick

Honors Projects

Interactivity is what distinguishes video games as a medium. In “moral choice video games,” or games in which the moral alignment of player choices affects plot and gameplay, the music often reflects the branching storylines. While scholarship exists that explores musical signifiers in video games, and scholarship alike exists that investigates moral choice video games, a gap in literature exists at the juncture of these two topics. This paper explores two moral choice video games—Undertale (Toby Fox, 2015) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (Rockstar Games, 2018)—in order to identify musical signifiers used by each game’s composer to represent these levels …

Music Of The Divine: Interweaving Threads Connecting Contemporary Chant-Based Piano Repertoire, Jeremy D. Duck Dec 2023

Music Of The Divine: Interweaving Threads Connecting Contemporary Chant-Based Piano Repertoire, Jeremy D. Duck

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

The purpose of this document is to prove chant remains an important source of inspiration among living composers, and, despite the number of piano works already incorporating chant, composers today are still finding unique ways to include chant in their music. To achieve this objective, representative works have been selected for research and analysis for four of the major chant traditions. Connor Chee’s The Navajo Piano, Victoria Bond’s Illuminations on Byzantine Chant, and Hayes Biggs’ E.M. am Flügel: Poem-Étude for Piano Solo, though the chants from which they are inspired are diverse in concept and style, they …

Music During Political Unrest: A Look Into Protest Music Of Northern Ireland During The Trouble's, Lauren Blue Nov 2023

Music During Political Unrest: A Look Into Protest Music Of Northern Ireland During The Trouble's, Lauren Blue

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Some of the most influential music and art emerges during civil, social, and political unrest. Music, in particular, is a critical aspect of almost every culture, and protest music is even more influential because it can unify causes. For example, when the Troubles in Northern Ireland gained global attention, many well-known artists released commercially successful songs relating to this phenomenon. Musicians worldwide, including Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Elton John, The Cranberries, and U2, implemented music as a reaction against the social injustice and violence occurring in Northern Ireland. Other songs, like Tina Turner's "Simply the Best," became anthems for the …

English Folk Song Performance On Tuba: An Annotated Bibliography, University Of Denver Nov 2023

English Folk Song Performance On Tuba: An Annotated Bibliography, University Of Denver

Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship

English folk song and tuba performance are mostly unrelated topics, the closest they come to intertwining is in the compositions of English folk influenced composers like Ralph Vaughan Williams or Percy Grainger. However, this combination is limited to Western Art Music performance, not the traditional performance of English Folk Song. This paper aims to describe how a tubist may perform English folk song in a more traditional setting not disturbed by the iterations created by composers rooted in Western Art Music.

Violin Pedagogical Methods And The Neurodivergent Brain: A Comparison Of Suzuki And O’Connor Methods In Context With Adhd And Dyslexia, University Of Denver

Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship

There are several teaching pedagogies that have been utilized throughout the history of the violin, beginning in the early sixteenth century. In my research, I have identified two categories: methods used in the U.S. and methods used in European countries. With this surplus of violin teaching methods, there are several approaches to individual techniques, which undoubtedly affect each pupil differently depending on their learning style. For students with learning deficits, such as dyslexia and ADHD, certain pedagogies such as the Suzuki Method approach auditory stimuli and note reading in a way that contrasts with other pedagogies utilized in the U.S. …

A Comparative Analysis Of Music And Sound In J-Horror Films And Their American Remakes, University Of Denver

Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship

It has been long established that music has the potential to influence a listener’s emotions. Likewise, visual stimulation can influence our emotions. Horror movies rely heavily on the combination of these two systems working together to create tension and fear. This essay will analyze the use of sound, music, and silence in Japanese horror films as compared to their American remakes. I will explore the instrumentation and compositional methods through the lens of traditional Japanese kabuki theatre conventions as well as classical American film scoring to compare my perceived scariness of each film’s most stressful scenes.

Marcel Tabuteau: A Glance Into The New Pedagogical Ideas That Changed The American Woodwind School, University Of Denver Nov 2023

Marcel Tabuteau: A Glance Into The New Pedagogical Ideas That Changed The American Woodwind School, University Of Denver

Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship

Marcel Tabuteau was one of the most influential American musicians, changing how American wind players approached their instruments and how they taught especially. His legacy as a teacher and as a performer has been passed down through generations of students and has been disseminated all over the United States and the world at large. To say that his teachings endured because they were good is quite an understatement, however, to analyze how his original teaching and ideas have evolved and grown with modern music and musicianship is what this paper aims to do. It also aims to analyze how his …

Annotated Bibliography: How Is Musical Labor Exploited In The United States’ Economy?, Kalen Meyer Nov 2023

Annotated Bibliography: How Is Musical Labor Exploited In The United States’ Economy?, Kalen Meyer

Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship

The goal of this paper is to highlight the various ways in which musicians and their labor are exploited in today’s capitalist economy. Music can be labelled in different ways such as aesthetic labor or creative labor and is not typically seen through the same lens of labor as more traditional forms of work. Record labels will abuse the vagueness of artists contracts to unfairly pay them and streaming services such as Spotify will leverage their political power and capital power to keep royalty payments to artists as low as possible. Gig work is also an important aspect to the …

Is It Worth It? A Look At Antique And Modern Violins: An Annotated Bibliography, Calvin Luo Nov 2023

Is It Worth It? A Look At Antique And Modern Violins: An Annotated Bibliography, Calvin Luo

Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship

Violin family instruments have been made for hundreds of years. Cremona, a city in Northern Italy, is particularly renowned for producing world-class instruments. Old Italian violins especially from Cremonese makers such as Amati, Stradivari, and Guarneri, are often associated with high-caliber soloists, concertmasters, or quartet first violinists. A multi-million-dollar price tag is also not uncommon for these types of instruments. A newly made or modern violin by an established living maker (luthier) is often marketed toward section players of orchestras, chamber musicians, and conservatory students. These instruments usually carry a price tag of anywhere from eight to eighty thousand dollars. …

The Ongoing Death Of Classical Music: An Annotated Bibliography, University Of Denver

Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship

Live classical music is an art medium that has been seeing a decrease in attendance for several decades. Several factors play into this ongoing “death,” which include but are not limited to decreasing support or funding for the arts, lack of education, as well as stagnating programs from repetitive repertoire. This paper examines these factors, and it suggests initiatives or solutions to this problem.

Orff: How His Pedagogy In Early Music Education Came To Be And What Influences Projected His Philosophy Into Popularity Amongst Music Educators, Zachary Gnall

Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship

Carl Orff, a profound music educator, composer, and musician of his time, developed his methodology of teaching early music to young students in the 1920’s. This pedagogy, known as Orff-Schulwerk or simply the Orff Approach, encompasses a student’s ability to use movement, drama, and speech within the context of music to create an engaging and cognitively engaged environment for the students, similar to that of their typical play times. Orff, alongside his colleague Gunild Keetman, developed this approach with through scrutiny over his involvement with the Nazi party, albeit indirect, just after The Great War ended.

What Defines A Runestad Work? The Evolution Of Choral Music In The Twenty-First Century, Nora Cullinan Nov 2023

What Defines A Runestad Work? The Evolution Of Choral Music In The Twenty-First Century, Nora Cullinan

Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship

Choral music has undergone a number of changes through the twentieth century and into the twenty-first, thanks in part to technological advances that offered composers a wealth of music traditions from which to draw inspiration. This led to what some have called the “neoimpressionist” style of choral composition: a new approach that combines historical traditions such as impressionism and early polyphony with forward-thinking sonorities and harmonic progressions, as well as a strict focus on text. In defining this style, musicologists often turned to the works of Eric Whitacre, who is well-known for his text-driven pieces laden with clustered harmonies. In …

Music Performance Anxiety: A Comparative Analysis Of Treatment Options For The Vocalist, Brooklyn Becker

Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship

Music Performance Anxiety (MPA) is a multifaceted social anxiety disorder that affects a significantly large population of practicing and professional musicians. If untreated, it can have detrimental effects on the performer and their career. MPA is multifaceted in that it encompasses cognitive, physiological, and behavioral symptoms. Because of its multifaceted nature, there is not one specific intervention or treatment option for MPA, but multiple interventions that have been studied and tested as potential treatment options. While the body of research on MPA has expanded since the 1970s, there is a disparity of research in the literature that focuses solely on …

“Workinonit”: How The Orchestration Techniques Of Maurice Ravel Influenced The Production Of J Dilla, And How Certain Musical Techniques Have Withstood Changes In Style And Genre, Richard Tucker

Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship

This paper explores the parallels between Classical orchestration techniques and Hip- Hop production. Using the works of producer/composer J Dilla and composer/orchestrator Maurice Ravel, the paper seeks to answer the question: How might Maurice Ravel’s orchestration and composition techniques have influenced, directly or indirectly, the production and composition techniques of J Dilla? Various recordings from across Dilla’s career, including selections from Fantastic, Vol. 2 and Donuts serve as a vehicle for looking at music from a technical and process perspective, attempting to put aside aesthetic conventions and analyses to allow vastly “different” musical idioms to be discussed together. Ravel’s work, …
