This is a mixed-methods pre-experimental clinical effectiveness trial that examines the effectiveness of a self-administered one-directional mood vectoring playlist in the management of symptoms of anxiety. This study used the Spielberger State Trait Anxiety Inventory, as well as a self-report Likert-type scale where participants rated their anxiety symptom severity, to explore the impact of the playlist intervention. Qualitative interviews sought to identify themes common among participants who were daily high responders and those who were daily low responders to the intervention in order to determine for whom this intervention would be most or least effective.Management of anxiety symptoms is particularly …

Christian Worship In Nagaland, Jane Elizabeth Laremore
Christian Worship In Nagaland, Jane Elizabeth Laremore
Masters Theses
Christianity has historically suppressed Naga traditional music and culture, and yet Christian music plays an important role in the construction of Naga identity. A brief history and overview of Christian music in Nagaland including, hymn singing, contemporary Christian music, and revival songs demonstrates how the unique social, cultural and political context of Nagaland has created a generational divide in worship style preferences and the birth of the revival song genre. Snapshots of the life and work of Naga composers further illustrate these themes and provide insight into the incorporation of Naga folk music in Christian worship. While advocates make strong …

Racial And Ethnic Representation In Music Therapy Education, Eden M. Medina
Racial And Ethnic Representation In Music Therapy Education, Eden M. Medina
Theses & Dissertations
Little to no research has been done on music therapy and racial, ethnic, and musical representation. The present study investigated the perceptions racially and ethnically diverse music therapy students/new professionals have of cultural and musical representation in music therapy education, and whether opportunities, exist for ethnically/culturally diverse students to include their music when it is not directly implemented in the music therapy curricula. Thirteen participants were surveyed and results showed that there are gaps in music therapy education when it comes to racial, ethnic, and musical representation outside of Western traditions. Findings indicate that there is a need for further …

The Music Therapist's Experience Of The Client-Therapist Relationship In Improvisational Voicework: An Interpretive Phenomenological Inquiry, Samantha Schick
Theses & Dissertations
The voice as it is used in clinical improvisation in music therapy can impact the therapeutic relationship between the client and therapist. This study sought to explore music therapists’ perceptions and experience of the client-therapist relationship in the context of improvisational voicework through semi-structured interviews with two experienced Nordoff-Robbins music therapists. The research questions included: What is the music therapist’s experience of the client-therapist relationship in using the voice improvisationally? What is the possible impact of vocal improvisation on the therapeutic process overall? Through an Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis of the data collected in the interviews, three superordinate themes emerged: 1) …
The Music Therapist’S Experience Of Flow During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Phenomenological Inquiry, Kaitlyn Upshaw
The Music Therapist’S Experience Of Flow During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Phenomenological Inquiry, Kaitlyn Upshaw
Theses & Dissertations
This study explored the music therapist’s lived experience of flow during a worldwide pandemic, within an improvisational music therapy approach. There is little to no literature about the concept of flow and how it relates to the music therapist’s lived experience, and none of which includes a worldwide traumatic event. Through a phenomenological investigation, the lived experiences of two music therapists who align with the improvisational music therapy approach were studied. A thematic analysis was conducted on data sources such as qualitative interview transcriptions and audio/video recordings of the interview. The following individual themes emerged from participant one: (a) flow …

Singing Difference Amid Relational Connectedness: A Narrative Study Of How Singing Together Shapes Worldview, Debbie Lou Ludolph
Singing Difference Amid Relational Connectedness: A Narrative Study Of How Singing Together Shapes Worldview, Debbie Lou Ludolph
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The experience of singing together holds the potential to constrain or set free the imagination to shape worldview. Undergirded by Walter Brueggemann’s argument that a contest of narratives exists in twenty-first century North American church and society, the researcher draws from Mary (Joy) Philip’s call for “in-between space” created by safe haven and adjacency and Lee Higgins’ “boundary-walking” to understand the place of difference in a theological orientation to community singing practice. Rooted in a narrative paradigm and undergirded by an interdisciplinary approach, this inquiry explores the storied lives of sixteen singers in a faith-based singing community called Inshallah to …
The Pedal Harp Tradition In Ireland (C.1790-1900): Practitioners, Pedagogy, Trade And Repertoire, Clare Mccague
The Pedal Harp Tradition In Ireland (C.1790-1900): Practitioners, Pedagogy, Trade And Repertoire, Clare Mccague
Doctoral
This study examines the European pedal harp tradition in Ireland in the period c.1790-1900. Steered by collections of nineteenth-century pedal harp repertoire, and hinged on data extracted from newspaper archives, it addresses a lacuna in harp-focused scholarship, by illuminating the significance of the pedal harp tradition in nineteenth-century Irish musical life and reviving nineteenth-century pedal harp repertoire of Irish interest.
The evolution of the pedal harp tradition in Ireland was influenced by multiple personalities. Foreign pedal harpists, including Nicholas Charles Bochsa (1789-1856), Charles Oberthür (1819-1895) and Aptommas (1829-1913), had a significant impact on the tradition and travelled regularly to Ireland …
Multimodal Learning For Dyslexic Musicians: Practical Applications For Adults, Melissa Mikucki
Multimodal Learning For Dyslexic Musicians: Practical Applications For Adults, Melissa Mikucki
Theses : Honours
Dyslexia affects 15 to 20% of the population according to the International Dyslexia Association. Multimodal media, such as smartphones and tablets, which are capable of presenting varied modes of information (for example, visual, aural, and kinetic), have been shown to aid learning in dyslexic children. Music has been identified as a useful multisensory tool to help educators improve literacy skills in children. However, little research has been done on the impact of dyslexia on a child or adult’s ability to learn and perform music. Few studies have been undertaken that focus solely on dyslexia’s effect on musical ability in children; …
Adapting Barbershop Harmony For The Saxophone Quartet, Jonathon Astbury
Adapting Barbershop Harmony For The Saxophone Quartet, Jonathon Astbury
Theses : Honours
Barbershop harmony refers to a unique style of arrangement and performance for voice that is strictly in four parts and acapella. There is much untapped potential in this close harmonic genre that could be explored in instruments other than the human voice. This paper set out to explore and establish a method of arranging and performing music of the barbershop style for the saxophone quartet. To achieve this transference of the style from voices to saxophones, the harmonic conventions and arranging rules of barbershop from the existing literature were established, along with a review of the literature pertaining to effective …
A Student Tubist's Guide To Doubling On Bass Trombone, Donovan Klutho
A Student Tubist's Guide To Doubling On Bass Trombone, Donovan Klutho
Honors Program Theses
The purpose of this project is to provide high school-aged tuba students a brief resource for learning to double on the bass trombone. As will be discussed in the guidebook, there are a number of reasons that students could want to double: jazz band, pit orchestra, show choir band, classical concert ensemble, etc. No matter the reason a student may want to learn to double, I wanted to provide a guide that would hopefully make it more accessible for them to learn. To accomplish this, I have made the language digestible for high schoolers without too many technical terms.
An Examination Of Graham Fitkin’S Saxophone Music And Implications For The Modern Saxophonist, Sean Hayes
An Examination Of Graham Fitkin’S Saxophone Music And Implications For The Modern Saxophonist, Sean Hayes
Theses : Honours
There is a significant body of academic writing on long-entrenched traditional chamber repertoire for the saxophone, both in the form of creative outputs (saxophone repertoire and études) and traditional academic writing (practical methods, journal articles, and dissertations). In contrast, the aggregate research output existing on “contemporary-classical” music for the saxophone is comparatively small. This research endeavours to contribute to the lesser-studied field, by providing an exposition on saxophone usage in the works of Graham Fitkin (1963-), an internationally recognised composer known for his music which demonstrates a variety of more recent styles, including post-minimalism, jazz and heavy influence from popular …
Exploring A Compositional Practice Through The Lens Of The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto, Jie Hong Yang
Exploring A Compositional Practice Through The Lens Of The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto, Jie Hong Yang
Theses : Honours
Asian music was an important influence upon some Western composers such as Claude Debussy, Giacomo Puccini, Maurice Ravel, Henry Cowell, Oliver Messiaen, John Cage and Lou Harrison. Since the 1960s, Australian composers such as Peter Sculthorpe, Anne Boyd, Richard Meale, and Julian Yu have similarly been influenced by music of Asia. In 2007, Chou Wen-chung wrote about today’s commercially oriented ‘world music’ environment, and addressed the need for Chinese composers to provide more meaningful contribution to the musical culture by writing music informed by knowledge drawn from their cultural heritage. As an Australian born Chinese composer, this exegesis was an …
Design, Sound And Compositional Aesthetic: The Grand Piano In Late Eighteenth-Century London And Vienna, Izaac Masters
Design, Sound And Compositional Aesthetic: The Grand Piano In Late Eighteenth-Century London And Vienna, Izaac Masters
Theses : Honours
During the late eighteenth century, the piano was the dominant musical instrument for musical composition, performance and instrument making. There were many innovations in the design, sound and touch of the piano, fuelling the emergence of a large body of idiomatic repertoire. Two distinct traditions of piano design emerged at the same time during the late eighteenth century, one in England and the other in Austria. In 1999, Krantz self-released Greenwich Mean, an album comprising of small vignettes spliced together from a year’s worth of recorded live improvisation from his weekly residency gig at the esteemed 55 Bar in New York’s Greenwich Village. Representations Of Chronic Migraine And Therapy Through New Electronic Music Composition, Peter Mcavan
Theses : Honours

Furthermore, evidence suggests that better understanding of how pain works can be instrumental in reducing pain (a process called Therapeutic Neuroscience Education). Drawing from this literature and my experience as an electronic musician suffering from chronic migraine, I utilise a practice-led research methodology to explore current scientific understandings of migraine and …

This dissertation examines the musical craft and artistry of innovative Australian violinist/violist Shenzo Gregorio (Shenton Gregory) and his transition from classical violinist to cross-genre improvisor. My research explores mental and practice strategies employed by Gregorio in making this transition, and how he has developed his authentic improvising style. This style draws on an eclectic range of musical genres and incorporates a variety of idiosyncratic extended techniques. Semi-structured interviews and demonstrations were conducted to gain insight into unique aspects of Gregorio’s improvisatory practice. In addition, transcription analyses of five of his recorded performances highlight his improvisational diversity and musical idiolect. Furthermore, …
