Non Carborundum Whimsicali, Thomas Stanley Haynes Aug 1951

Non Carborundum Whimsicali, Thomas Stanley Haynes

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This composition for orchestra was performed as a ballet under the title "Big Top" with the Modern Dance Group of College of the Pacific on May 24 and 25, 1951. The orchestra for the performance was made up of two pianos, a banjo, tympani, flute, piccolo, clarinet, bass clarinet, trumpet, two trombones, and tuba. In this final setting a larger orchestra is involved.

The piece was cast in sonata allegro form because of the principle of contrasting themes and thematic development which characterizes this form.. I wanted to present two very contrasting moods, one of primitive brutal force, the other …

Analysis Of Scherzo - Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, Earl Boyd Jan 1951

Analysis Of Scherzo - Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, Earl Boyd

Papers

This movement is in the large ternary form, or scherzo and trio form. Beethoven did not mark this movement as scherzo, possibly to avoid the connotation of a light, airy character usually associated with the term scherzo, but merely marked it allegro. The first part has two statements of the first and second themes, with a development section utilizing theses themes leading directly to the trio. The trio utilizes the same theme in both sections; the first section is repeated as is, and in the second section, Beethoven deviates from the usual design by repeating the second section with an …

An Evaluation Of Piano Literature Written Originally For Four Hands--One Piano, Frederick Farnam Owens Jan 1951

An Evaluation Of Piano Literature Written Originally For Four Hands--One Piano, Frederick Farnam Owens

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to explore and analyze the wealth of intrinsic value that is to be found in compositions originally written for piano duet (two performers at one piano). Only compositions originally conceived for piano duet will be considered transcriptions of works that were at first in the form of piano solo, string quartet, orchestra or any such medium other than piano duet, will not be considered in this writing. Also excluded will be works for piano duet that are not of concert hall use; this paper is concerned with that literature for piano duet which is …

A Study To Determine The Value Of Music As A Therapeutic Agent In The Rehabilitation Of A Schizophrenic, Orval Zane Harpham Jan 1951

A Study To Determine The Value Of Music As A Therapeutic Agent In The Rehabilitation Of A Schizophrenic, Orval Zane Harpham

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Music as a therapy still awaits complete recognition from many medical authorities. any doctors and psychiatrists are quite willing to recognize music as a potent agent in relaxing tensions and stimulating activity, but thus far only in too few instances has music been accorded status equivalent to that of the other accepted therapies.1 In the treatment of some types of mental illness it is the writer's belief music lends itself as a therapy more readily than any other medium.

Aria Da Capo : An Opera In One Act, Burdette Marion Fore Jan 1951

Aria Da Capo : An Opera In One Act, Burdette Marion Fore

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Foreword to Aria Da Capo

The libretto of the opera is a verbatim setting of Edna St. Vincent Millay's one act play "Aria da Capo." World events, especially World War II and the current Korean War influenced the choice of this timely, yet timeless play. Miss Millay's death occurred during the composition of the opera. She never knew, therefore, of the composition or performance of her play as an opera.

The form of the opera is that of the "da capo" aria. he form, of course, was determined by the play which ends exactly as it started. Thematic material consists …
