The purpose of this study was to determine (1) if there was a low standard of rhythmic response in certain fourth, fifth, and sixth grade pupils in the Hartley (Iowa) Community School; (2) if it was possible to construct a diagnostic instrument which would identify the specific areas of weakness which may contribute to the low standard of rhythmic response in these students; and (3) if the results obtained from the administration of the diagnostic instrument would enable the writer to make recommendations for teaching methods and materials which may correct the deficiencies found.

It is the purpose of this study to compile and organize information concerning the fundamental physical and mechanical techniques of playing each of the orchestral string instruments, such that with this sourcebook of information, the inexperienced string teacher or converted band man could establish and maintain a successful string program in the public schools of America. The emphasis on chamber music may be considered one of the most interesting and important developments in the school music program today. There is perhaps no other musical medium which holds greater possibilities for the development of the student's musical ability. In the years following World War II, the instrumental music programs in many schools have grown to the point where there are sufficient string and wind players to perform many major orchestral works. A student who performs in either an orchestra or band, however, cannot develop a critical sensitivity towards ensemble.

A Collection And Analysis Of Folk Songs From Wales, Sanpete County, Utah, Leslie E. Rees

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to collect and record folk songs known to some of the older inhabitants of Wales, Utah. An analysis was made of thirty of the forty-six songs for the purpose of attaining a knowledge of their characteristics such as form, rhythm, melody, tempo, tonality, melodic interval range, phrase and period length, theme repetition, texture, and ornamentation. Observations were also made with reference to the textual influence on the overall musical effect.

Among the Venetian printers who published music in the opening decade of the seventeenth century, Alessandro Rauerij was one o fthe most active. The Canzoni consists of nine part-books-- eight for the melodic voices; the ninth, an organ-bass. The collection contains thirty-six instrumental canzonas. The present volume constitutes a modern edition of Rauerij's collection and is presented in an open score.
