American Revival Songs, 1820-1850: The Christian Lyre And Spiritual Songs For Social Worship, Paula M. Kane '80
Fenwick Scholar Program
This thesis focuses on the period 1820-1850, the heyday of revivalism and revival songs. The first section describes the background, nature and dynamics of 19th-century revivals in order to provide the historical setting and theological climate for the emergence of revival songs. The second section examines the origins, development and use of revival music in general. Two song collections are emphasized: the Christian Lyre compiled by Joshua Leavitt and Spiritual Songs for Social Worship by Thomas Hastings and Lowell Mason.

J. S. Bach’S Keyboard Fingering: New Evidence, Quentin Faulkner
J. S. Bach’S Keyboard Fingering: New Evidence, Quentin Faulkner
Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications
There is presently considerable interest among scholars and performers of early music in early keyboard fingering practices and their effect on the music’s articulation and phrasing. This is nowhere more evident than in the current reconsideration of Johann S. Bach’s keyboard music in the light of primary source material on his keyboard fingering. The primary sources available to us up to now are three in number:
1. Applicatio (BWV 994)
2. Praeambulum (BWV 928)
3. Praeludium und Fughetta in C-dur (BWV 870a)
During recent research into Bach’s keyboard fingering practices, I had occasion to examine Johann Philipp Kirnberger’s Clavierübungen mit …

Home, Loved Ones & Heaven: Folk Expressin In The Songs Of Katherine O'Neill Peters Sturgill, George Reynolds
Home, Loved Ones & Heaven: Folk Expressin In The Songs Of Katherine O'Neill Peters Sturgill, George Reynolds
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Formation, expression, and function of world view were examined in the life and compositions of folk musician, Katherine O'Neill Peters Sturgill. It was seen that the institutions of home, loved ones, and heaven were dominant themes in the formation of her world view. When twenty-two of Kate's gospel and sentimental song compositions were examined for thematic content, they were found to reflect the predominant formative influences in Kate's life. An interpretive model was developed showing home, loved ones, and heaven to be unified themes in a concept of sacred order--a concept which stood to oppose and defend against the banal …

The Relationship Between Beethoven's Heiligenstadt Testament And His Nine Symphonies, Thomas Mitchell
The Relationship Between Beethoven's Heiligenstadt Testament And His Nine Symphonies, Thomas Mitchell
Honors Theses
The main consideration throughout all the paper will be. the correlation between Beethoven's symphonies and his Heiligenstadt Testament. Because the so-called "Battle" Symphony is not a true symphony at all (being written for a huge, mechanical contraption), it will not be dealt with at all.
