Froberger's Toccatas: Stylistic Considerations And Modern Editions, James W. Kosnik Jan 1982

Froberger's Toccatas: Stylistic Considerations And Modern Editions, James W. Kosnik

Music Faculty Publications

(First paragraph) The music of Johann Jakob Froberger is recognized by scholars and musicians to be of significant artistic achievement and historical interest. Yet, with the possible exception of the suites, few modern-day performances of his music are likely to be heard for several reasons: the music does not fulfill the requirement of easy and accessible listening; the music lacks a certain superficial brilliance, or the proper instruments are unavailable so that the music cannot be heard in its most authentic language. The most important reason, however, is our own lack of understanding of the correct performance style which prevents …

West Virginia Folk Music: A Descriptive Guide To Field Recordings In The West Virginia And Regional History Collection, John A. Cuthbert

Bibliographies and Research Guides

West Virginia University's contribution to the foundation of modern folk music scholarship is widely recognized. Due to the pioneering achievements of its faculty, the University became an important center of folksong scholarship in the 1920s and 30s. John Harrington Cox's Folk-Songs of the South' served as both precedent and pattern for the myriad of subsequent publications upon which folksong study is based.Various works by Josiah Combs, who taught at the University for but a few years, and Louis Watson Chappell, who remained throughout his career, are equally notable if less obviously influential. The University's subsequent contributions to the field, however, …

The Application Of The Kodaly Method To Instrumental Music Education, Sherry Black Jan 1982

The Application Of The Kodaly Method To Instrumental Music Education, Sherry Black

Honors Theses

Music educator have constantly searched for more effective ways to teach their subject. In the past thirty years, several philosophies and methods of music education have had considerable influence on the music curricula in American schools. An examination of one one of these methods, the Kodaly method, will be the focus of this paper. Zoltan Kodaly, a Hungarian composer and educator, believed that the voice was nature's first instrument and that only though its correct utilization could a child develop correctly in all other aspects of music. The history, goals and techniques of Kodaly's method will be outlined in the …

The Short Piano Works Of Edward Macdowell, Francis Paul Brancaleone Jan 1982

The Short Piano Works Of Edward Macdowell, Francis Paul Brancaleone

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

At the beginning of the twentieth century, Edward MacDowell (1860-1908) was thought by many to be America's leading composer. His fame rested on his personal appearances, performances of his orchestral suites, piano concertos, and other piano works, as well as his teaching position at Columbia. This study presents a style analysis of the complete body of short piano works (160), including the unpublished juvenilia (32 compositions) and those works published under the pseudonym of Edgar Thorn (13 compositions).

MacDowell's published short piano compositions consist of 115 pieces in 19 sets, composed over the period 1880-1902. These pieces constitute a significant …

An Investigation Into Arcangelo Corelli's Influence On Eighteenth-Century Spain, Craig H. Russell Jan 1982

An Investigation Into Arcangelo Corelli's Influence On Eighteenth-Century Spain, Craig H. Russell

Music

Although it has long been known that Arcangelo Corelli's music was immensely popular across most of Europe, it has not been widely recognized that he was revered and acclaimed by the Spanish. The fact is that they regarded him as one of the preeminent composers of the eighteenth century. His works were copied out into many contemporaneous manuscripts, and the leading Spanish theorists of the time, progressive and conservative alike, mentioned him frequently and always with a tone of admiration and respect.

Masters Theses

This thesis examines the stylistic aspects of form, harmony, tonality, melody, texture and rhythm in six twentieth century piano sonatinas. These sonatinas are arranged in chronological order from 1905 to 1949, each comprising a chapter of the thesis. There is also an appendix accompanying each sonatina which contains the formal and harmonic outline of that sonatina. The sonatinas chosen for analysis are Sonatine by Maurice Ravel (1905); Sonatina by Bela Bartok (1915); Sonatina by Dmitri Kabalevsky (1930), Op. 13, No. 1; Sonatina by Serge Prokofieff (1931), Op. 54, No. 1; Sonatina by David Diamond (1935); and Sonatina by Vincent Persichetti …

Classroom Music Continuum For The Vallecito Union School District, Kindergarten Through Sixth Grade, Deborah Glow Martin Jan 1982

Classroom Music Continuum For The Vallecito Union School District, Kindergarten Through Sixth Grade, Deborah Glow Martin

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It is generally recognized and accepted that music is a vital part of a child's education. The Music Educators National Conference stated in "The Child's Bill of Rights in Music":

Every child has the right to full and free opportunity to explore and develop his capacities in the field of music in such ways as may bring him happiness and a sense of well-being.

It is impossible to deal with all aspects of elementary music education in a single presentation; consequently, this thesis is directed toward a specific need in a particular school district, namely the Vallecito Union School District. …

Siva's Dance: A Choreographic Thesis, Kathleen L. Smith Jan 1982

Siva's Dance: A Choreographic Thesis, Kathleen L. Smith

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Siva's Dance was a project which had been in various developmental stages for many years. The work symbolized movement in the universe through the cycles of creation and destruction; where life and death give birth to one another. Siva represented the continuing thread which weaves the years and cycles together. My choreographic intention was to thread small segments together to create an ongoing and evolutionary process. None of these segments vas meant as a complete statement, rather each was a compacted and cryptic piece to be seen as a color, or word added to the whole. The wide chronological spans …

Fiddle Songs And Banjo Songs: A Description Index, Gilbert Wayne Howard Dec 1981

Fiddle Songs And Banjo Songs: A Description Index, Gilbert Wayne Howard

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

English-language texts associated with fiddle and banjo in the southern United States are described and then indexed for comparative reference. The fiddle songs are typically humorous, very brief, highly variable and disunified. The same is true of many banjo songs associated with the banjo. Ballads in the fiddle and the banjo repertory are not indexed if previously catalogued by Child or Laws.

Fiddle and banjo songs are defined as texts associated with fiddle or banjo playing, either through instrumental accompaniment or because informants mentally associate them with the fiddle or banjo. Various ways of performing the songs are enumerated, with …
