Charles Nicholson – The Forgotten Flutist, Wendell Dobbs Jan 1984

Charles Nicholson – The Forgotten Flutist, Wendell Dobbs

Music Faculty Research

The recent fascination for the flutist-composers of the 19th century has brought to life much music by flute virtuosos such as Tulou, Demersseman, Boehm, Genin, and others. To this time, however, the colorful artistry of Charles Nicholson has been overlooked. His brief career, spanning but two decades, brought the flute to the forefront as a solo instrument in England and propagated numerous fantasies, variation, methods, and other works for flute. Indeed, his contributions as flute virtuoso and flute manufacturer have made an indelible mark on the history and development of the instrument. In the London of the 1820's and 1830's …

Perception Of Structure In Novel Music, Andrea R. Halpern Jan 1984

Perception Of Structure In Novel Music, Andrea R. Halpern

Faculty Journal Articles

Two experiments demonstrated the way in which musicians and nonmusicians process realistic music encountered for the first time. A set of tunes whose members were related to each other by a number of specific musical relationships was constructed. In experiment I, subjects gave similarity judgments of all pairs of tunes, which were analyzed by the ADD-TREE clustering program. Musicians and nonmusicians gave essentially equivalent results: Tunes with different rhythms were rated as being very dissimilar, whereas tunes identical except for being in a major versus a minor mode were rated as being highly similar. In Experiment 2, subjects learned to …

The Impact Of Language On Musical Composition In Ghana: An Introduction To The Musical Style Of Ephraim Amu, V. Kofi Agawu Jan 1984

The Impact Of Language On Musical Composition In Ghana: An Introduction To The Musical Style Of Ephraim Amu, V. Kofi Agawu

Publications and Research

In most cultures of the world, the creative act of composition may be defined simply as the transformation of pre-existing material into new, individualized structures. The precompositional resource may be a system such as the hierarchical arrangement of triads that forms the basis of Western tonality, a set of formulas that generates such genres as Gregorian chant and West African storytelling, or even a rigidly defined set of relationships such as those inherent in a twelve-tone row. In each case, the precompositional elements provide a framework for the analysis and interpretation of the composition.

The Effects Of Sedative Music Of Test-Anxiety In College Students : Presented To The Graduate Faculty Of The University Of The Pacific In Partial Fulfillment Of The Requirements For The Degree Of Master Of Arts, Audree Simer O'Connell

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Thirty-seven volunteers participated in a study examining the effects of sedative music on test anxiety in college students. The experimental group used sedative music with progressive muscle relaxation and a suggestion of imagery before the scheduled hour of a final examination. The control group had self selected relaxation with no music. Baseline measurements were taken in blood pressure and pulse rates. These measurements were repeated and an anxiety inventory was administered before and after treatment. Results indicated no significant differences between the two groups in the physiological measurements. Verbal report from the anxiety inventory gave significant results at the .05 …

Graduate Flute Recital, Deanna Sue Johnson Jan 1984

Graduate Flute Recital, Deanna Sue Johnson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The fantasia which opens the recital is one of the Twelve Fantasias for transverse flute without continua written by Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767). Telemann's combination of the French style galant with the learned style was described by Romain Rolland as having let in "currents of fresh air" to German instrumental music. Although he remained true to French affections, he looked upon harmony as the proper vehicle for heightened expression. His uncomplicated textures reveal his importance as a link between late Baroque and the new classical style. The Twelve Fantasias are a faithful reflection of this era. Spirited and lively while …

Heinrich Schenker As An Interpreter Of Beethoven's Piano Sonatas, William Rothstein Jan 1984

Heinrich Schenker As An Interpreter Of Beethoven's Piano Sonatas, William Rothstein

Publications and Research

There was a time when it seemed necessary for admirers of the work of Heinrich Schenker to remind the musical community periodically that it had grown out of a lifetime of practical musical experience—that is, that Der freie Satz did not represent a self-contained system of theoretical speculation. Schenker himself tried repeatedly throughout his career to impress this point upon his readers. In recent years, fortunately, this reminder—which had threatened to become merely ritualistic—has become somewhat less necessary. The change in Schenker's reputation may, it seems, be dated precisely to 1975, when Dover Publications issued an inexpensive reprint of his …
