Transcendent Journeys, Spiritual Frontiers And Analysis, Peter H. Fischer

Masters Theses

Transcendent Journeys, Spiritual Frontiers is a musical composition for mezzo-soprano, flute, clarinet, piano, percussion, violin, violoncello, and conductor. The thesis consists of a reduced conductor's score and a written analysis. The texts are "The Moon and the Yew Tree" by Sylvia Plath, "Heart of Autumn" by Robert Penn Warren, and "Byzantium" by William Butler Yeats. Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The dissertation consists of two parts, an analytical essay and a composition.

The essay starts from the fact that the musical worth of the Rhapsody in Blue has often been questioned, despite its having been a fixture of the repertoire since its premiere. A close (Schenkerian) analysis shows the flaws of the piece in detail. It also reveals considerable structural coherence, however, comprising very sophisticated treatment of motives in the foreground and middleground, and, in the background, the unfolding of a tritone as the boundary of a tonic that is both B-flat major-minor and a whole-tone collection. Since Gershwin was …

Conducting Recital, Anne Marie Jackson Jan 1989

Conducting Recital, Anne Marie Jackson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Percy Aldridge Grainger (1882-1961) is acknowledged by most wind conductors as a major contributor to the field of wind music. He achieved this distinction through his numerous compositions for varying combinations of wind instruments. Many of his works have become standard repertory pieces for the wind band medium: Lincolnshire Posy. Colonial Song, Irish Tune from County Derry, Molly on the Shore, Children's March, and Country Gardens are but a few. In addition to these standard pieces, Grainger arranged for winds numerous compositions which were originally conceived for another medium.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effects of music and metronomic beat on heart rate (HR). ratings of perceived exertion (RPE). and physical endurance in healthy females ages 18 to 30. Volunteers were screened via a health questionnaire and the Astrand Work Test on a Monark bicycle ergometer. yielding a predicted aerobic working capacity (V02) of 28 mililiters or more. The 30 subjects were then randomly assigned to one of two experimental conditions (music or metronome group) for a cycling test at 75% capacity. HR and Borg RPE were measured repeatedly, with a posttest measure of physical endurance (kilometers travelled). No significant …

The Terpsichore Collection Of Michael Praetorius, Judith G. Freshwater

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The Terpsichore musarum was compiled and published in 1612 by Michael Praetorius, a man of many accomplishments. The secular pieces in Terpsichore represent a major departure from his otherwise religious musical output. Roughly a third of the tunes in the collection are borrowed from contemporary lute tablatures, while the remainder are French dance melodies given to Praetorius by the dance master Antoine Emeraude and the violinist Francisque Caroubel. The collection consists of 312 dances including branles, courantes , ballets, voltes, and passamezzos. Praetorius published it in 1612 in a set of five part books . A modern edition, prepared by …

Prairie Idyll: An Original Composition For Orchestra, Peter Hamlin Jan 1989

Prairie Idyll: An Original Composition For Orchestra, Peter Hamlin

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Prairie Idyll is an orchestra composition scored for flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, and trumpets in pairs, four horns, percussion, harp, and medium-sized string section. The availability of exceptional solo players in the first performances encouraged virtuosic writing in many of the parts. The work developed as a musical interpretation of the Cedar Hills Sand Prairie, a small, protected virgin patch of prairie in Black Hawk County, Iowa. The landscape inspired the moods that run through the piece, as well as the asynchronous and layered rhythmic devices employed throughout.

Modal Harmony In Andalusian, Eastern European, And Turkish Syncretic Musics, Peter L. Manuel Jan 1989

Modal Harmony In Andalusian, Eastern European, And Turkish Syncretic Musics, Peter L. Manuel

Publications and Research

This article examined, in a cursory form, the standardized ways of harmonizing predominantly modal melodies in the contexts of a set of interrelated urban folk and popular musics of the Mediterranean area. Insofar as these music employ a harmonic-melodic system qualitatively distinct from that of Western common practice, they are worthy of scholarly attention in themselves. This article further seeks to revive the spirit of "Comparative Musicology" and to suggest ways in which cross-cultural comparison of selected musical parameters may reveal new sorts of pan-regional music areas.
