"A Festival of Form" was both an event at Bridwell and Perkins School of Theology and a conceptual piece of music that lasted several days. In this rendering, the "piece of music" was articulated in a fluid combination of activities that included works by other composers, including John Cage. The activities involved--from lectures, conversations, and meals to actual performances of both short works and especially the world-record breaking rendition of "Organ2/ASLSP" played by Christopher Anderson--comprise the entirety of "A Festival of Form" as performance piece. This study considers the current communicative arts practices of the Monacan Indian Nation, an Indigenous Virginia tribe of approximately 2500 people located in Amherst County, Virginia. Historically the tribe was a large nation that extended from the falls of the James River near Richmond, Virginia to the Southwestern portions of the state near Roanoke and now the Monacan Indian Nation homeland is at Bear Mountain in Amherst County, Virginia. Yet the centuries-long musical tradition cultivated by the Mevleviye remains much less known. My capstone project is a research-based performance about the Broder Singers, the first Yiddish actors. They performed primitive musical and theatrical pieces in Yiddish beginning in the mid-19th century in non-theatrical spaces such as taverns and gardens, in Eastern Europe. They were part of a larger movement creating secular Yiddish culture beyond the religiously proscribed expressions of traditional Jewish life. Largely born and raised in traditional communities themselves, they mocked wealthy religious community leaders, utilized gender drag, and compassionately portrayed impoverished people. The overviews aim at recounting and documenting the important events, issues, and changes around individual art forms in the year.

The ebook Hong Kong Xiqu Overview 2019 is organized in two parts: “overview” and “special topics.”

In order to “stimulate more ambitious performances,” as David Lewin writes in his Studies in Music with Text, this dissertation is meant to provide new perspectives into two preexisting works, Maurice Ravel’s Sonate pour Violon et Violoncelle, and Osvaldo Golijov’s Mariel for cello and marimba, through the active making of two original compositions written for similar instrumentations, La Libertad se levantó llorando for violin and cello, and Speechless for cello and percussion. This study was designed to investigate the decision-making processes involved with deciding the funding and framing of music programs in three suburban school districts in the New York metropolitan area. School leaders were interviewed to understand the factors associated with the decision-making process. The findings helped to understand educational leaders’ perceptions, how programs changed over time, and the different actions that were taken. On 7 July 1937, Japanese forces based in Manchuria charged southward towards Beijing, invading north China and hence starting the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–45). On 7 December 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, transforming the Second Sino-Japanese War into the Pacific War. As a result of Pearl Harbor, the status of Allied citizens living in China at the time changed from neutral to ‘enemy aliens’. These Allied citizens included individuals and their families who worked in China as government officials, executives, engineers and Christian missionaries. They were forced into internment camps under the watchful eyes of the …

I assert that we learn Shakespeare better when we study him against the adaptation. Some of the adaptation choices made by opera composers and librettists-- and especially by stage designers in recent productions-- provoke us to critique a production concept for its innovative staging, forcing us to learn more about Shakespeare's original. The recent Metropolitan's The Tempest conveys the 2004 Thomas Adès Tempest as if an 18th century impresario Prospero had conjured or appropriated the contents of the Milan opera house to his island. Meredith Oakes's libretto simplifies much of Shakespearean language to efficient rhyming couplets, yet this opera eloquently …

Fashion has been a catalyst for social change throughout human history. Fashion in 1920s America in particular reflects society's rapidly evolving attitudes towards gender and race. Beginning with how corsetry heavily restricted women for nearly four hundred years up until the twentieth century, this thesis explores how clothing has acted as a tool for societal progression following World War I and Women's Suffrage and during the Jazz Age and The Harlem Renaissance. Specifically, this thesis examines how the influence of jazz music and dance that originated from Black American communities led to the creation of the flapper evening dress. The …

Increasing instability in higher education funding (Thomas, 2021) has directly impacted the University of Montana music program but has also indirectly changed the role of music students to such an extent that I now often say, “every artist is an advocate.” In 2018, the University of Montana School of Music experienced significant threats from budget cuts, and in the years following, attempts to earn legislative funding for capital development failed. Faced with these budget cuts and other lack of funding, music students had to advocate for themselves and employ community and institutional support to maintain the strength of their program. …

Robert Altman’s film Nashville (1975) generated a prodigious amount of press commentary following its release. Early on, critics praised the film, but a disappointing box office led many to assume a split between big-city liberal audiences and small-town conservative audiences. Subsequent press coverage connected this divide to both the film’s politics and its use and portrayal of country music, as political pundits, music critics, country music stars, and general audiences weighed in. การแสดงเดี่ยวขับร้องโดย รัฐพงศ์ ปิติชาญ : วรรณกรรมเพลงคลาสสิกและละครเพลง มีจุดประสงค์เพื่อสร้างสรรค์ผลงานการแสดงทางการขับร้อง ที่มีการผสมผสานระหว่างการขับร้อง จากวรรณกรรมเพลงคลาสสิกและละครเพลงรวมทั้งสิ้น 12 เพลง โดยมีสัดส่วนของประเภทเพลง ในการแสดงครึ่งต่อครึ่ง ผู้วิจัยได้คัดเลือกบทเพลงร้องจากวรรณกรรมเพลงคลาสสิกเป็นจำนวน 6 เพลง โดยมีทั้งบทเพลงที่มีเนื้อร้องภาษาอิตาเลียน และภาษาเยอรมัน และอีก 6 เพลง จากบทเพลงร้องวรรณกรรมละครเพลง โดยผู้วิจัยได้คัดเลือกจากบทเพลงที่มีชื่อเสียงโด่งดัง ทั้งบทเพลงที่ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษและภาษาไทย เนื่องด้วยบทเพลงที่ได้คัดเลือกมานั้น มีความยาก และมีเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะตัว จึงต้องศึกษาและวิเคราะห์เพื่อให้เกิดความเข้าใจอย่างถ่องแท้ ในด้านเทคนิคการขับร้อง ภาษา แนวปฏิบัติสังคีต และการตีความเพลง จากหนังสือ ตำรา และบทความที่เกี่ยวข้องรวมถึงรายละเอียดทางของส่วนดนตรีที่บรรเลงประกอบการร้อง เพื่อให้ผู้วิจัยสามารถเลือกใช้วิธีการการขับร้องต่าง ๆ ได้เหมาะสมตามลักษณะเพลงมากที่สุด และเพื่อให้สามารถสื่อสารกับผู้ฟังได้ตรงกับจุดประสงค์ทางดนตรีของเพลงมากที่สุดทั้งสองประเภท
