First released in 1981 in Germany, this volume of essays edited by Professor John W. Welch devotes more than three hundred pages to identifying and analyzing chiasmus in ancient texts. King Mosiah And The Judgeship, John A. Tvedtnes
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The immediate situation that prompted Mosiah2 to institute a system of judges to govern the Nephites was the departure of his four sons. The people asked that Aaron be appointed king, but he and his brothers had gone to the land of Nephi to preach to the Lamanites and had renounced their claims to the monarchy (Mosiah 29:1–6).

The Creation narrative, found in various places within the canon of scripture of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, describes the institution of two different types of time. The first type of time is established in the “fourth day” with the placement of the astronomical bodies, which act as markers “for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and for years”—that is, common time (Genesis 1:14; Moses 2:14). The second type of time is established in the “seventh day,” when the Lord rests from his labors. Situated as it was at the conclusion of the physical creation and …

New Book On Book Of Mormon Geography Provides Maps, Helpful Explanations

As Mormon edited the Book of Mormon, he must have had a map in his mind of the places and physical features that were the setting for the events described in that book. In Mormon's Map, a new book from FARMS, John L. Sorenson attempts to reconstruct that mental map" Mormon's Map"-using information in the Book of Mormon text.

Ancient Names In The Book Of Mormon, Matthew L. Bowen
Ancient Names In The Book Of Mormon, Matthew L. Bowen
Interpreter Foundation Books
Through many years of scholarly exploration, Matthew Bowen has unveiled new layers of meaning in many Book of Mormon passages in which the use of names appears to employ literary tools of ancient Hebrew writers, including a wide variety of wordplays. Every chapter here breaks substantial new ground in terms of revealing how Book of Mormon authors wove proper names and titles, along with their meanings, into their writings.

The 2021 Amazon Prime series LuLaRich (reviewed in this volume) chronicled the meteoric rise and fall of LuLaRoe, a billion-dollar multilevel marketing (MLM) company founded in 2013 by DeAnne and Mark Stidham that specializes in women’s clothing. The series explored the company’s founding, growth, corporate culture, and recruitment and marketing strategies, as well as the particular appeal of the garments themselves. LuLaRoe’s success in the 2010s can be attributed to the convergence of several factors: the growth of social media, the rise of athleisure wear, the economic impact of the 2008 recession, the company’s ability to tap into a large …

Review Of R. Gordon Shepherd, A. Gary Shepherd, And Ryan T. Cragun, Eds. The Palgrave Handbook Of Global Mormonism. Cham, Switzerland: Springer International Publishing, 2020., Melissa Wei-Tsing Inouye
Mormon Studies Review
At 868 pages, this volume is more comprehensive than any that have come before, with thirty-one chapters written by forty-two authors on three restoration traditions, discussing over forty countries and even more ethnic and cultural groupings. The editors have brought together not only scholars from the fields already well represented within Mormon studies (history, religious studies, sociology, anthropology, studies of gender, race, and culture) but also scholars with provocative perspectives from geography, demography, and corporate research. There is a pleasing mix of new and familiar names.
Reviewing a book such as this one could easily consume the allotted space with …

Review: Taylor G. Petrey And Amy Hoyt, Eds. The Routledge Handbook Of Mormonism And Gender. New York: Routledge, 2020., Brenda R. Weber
Mormon Studies Review
Taylor Petrey and Amy Hoyt’s The Routledge Handbook of Mormonism and Gender is a veritable gold mine of material for scholars interested in the historical and contemporary consideration of gender and gender identity as it relates to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, here referred to as the Mormons. Putting together a volume such as this requires an adroit balance, since the editors and authors must be aware of larger field questions related to gender studies, social science methodologies, religious studies and theological approaches to scholarship, and, obviously, discussions in Mormon studies and Mormon history. Mormonism itself is …

“By what authority doest thou these things?” Jerusalem’s religious leaders ask Jesus. “And who gave thee this authority to do these things?” What are this man’s credentials? Who has authorized him to teach and preach, heal on the Sabbath, cast out money-changers from the temple, curse fig trees, and forgive sins? Jesus answers their question with a question of his own. “The baptism of John,” he asks, “was it from heaven, or of men?” They are afraid to answer, because the masses believe that John—another uncredentialed, rustic man—was a prophet. So they tell him they do not know. “Neither do …

The Psalm Of Nephi In An Age Of Anxiety And Division, Patrick Q. Mason
BYU Studies
It is probably fair to say that readers over the years have responded more positively to the Book of Mormon’s religious teachings and spiritual power than to its purely literary merits. When Parley P. Pratt famously wrote that “sleep was a burden when the night came, for [he] preferred reading to sleep,” it was not because of the Book of Mormon’s page-turning plot. Rather, Pratt testified, “As I read, the spirit of the Lord was upon me, and I knew and comprehended that the book was true.” On the other hand, those uninspired by what they discovered in the book’s …

The authors are to be applauded for undertaking a book of such an expansive nature and managing the subject matter as thoroughly as they have done.
