Zelph
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In recent years, discussions of Book of Mormon geography have concentrated on limited areas in Mesoamerica. The story of "Zelph, the white Lamanite," is frequently cited as evidence that the Nephites occupied the entire North American continent and fought some of their final battles near the Illinois River. Who was Zelph, and are his bones relevant to the Book of Mormon? Researcher Kenneth Godfrey shows why one should be cautious in drawing specific geographical conclusions from this incident.

F.A.R.M.S. has frequently been asked to recommend books that people might read to learn more about the world of Lehi, the ancient source of much of the Book of Mormon. Beside the classic works by Hugh Nibley, Lehi in the Desert, An Approach to the Book of Mormon, and Since Cumorah, a very valuable book is by Father Roland de Vaux, Ancient Israel, in two volumes (McGraw Hill). Although slightly dated, the book remains extremely insightful, generally readable and reliable, and conveniently available in paperback.

Archaeological Findings Discussed
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In a January presentation cosponsored by F.A.R.M.S., explorer Gene Savoy reported some of his latest archaeological findings to a large audience at BYU. Hehasdiscovered43 "lost cities" in the jungle and mountains of South America. His latest discovery, the Gran Vilaya, is said to cover approximately 100 square miles and is found some 400 miles north of Lima, Peru, in virtually unexplored tropical mountains that scholars had thought supported only small villages of agriculturalists.

An Lds Interpretation Of Jesus' Most Masterful Sermon
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The heart of the Book of Mormon is the Sermon of the resurrected Christ to the Nephites who had assembled at their temple in Bountiful (3Nephi 11- 18). The heart of that Sermon is Jesus' Sermon on the Mount from Palestine (Matthew 5-7), adapted to the Nephite setting.

In the third annual F.A.R.M.S. Book of Mormon lecture, entitled "The Book of Mormon, Designed for Our Day," Professor Richard D. Rust of the University of North Carolina discussed how the Book of Mormon was shaped artistically to speak to us in this day. He examined literary aspects of the book that develop the primary purposes set out in the title page.

Women And Family In The Book Of Mormon
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
F.A.R.M.S. is pleased to feature three recent articles that have dealt with women and the family in the Book of Mormon. Al though only six women are mentioned by name in this volume (Sariah, Isabel, Abish, Eve, Sarah, and Mary the Mother of Jesus-and only the first three were figures in the actual Nephite account), many women are known in the book for their courageous and faithful lives, and the message of the Book of Mormon is addressed to all people, "male and female" (2 Nephi 26:33;Mosiah27:25; Alma 11:44;32:23).

Ogham Article Published
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In the Fall 1989 Insights we mentioned that a review of claims of the finding of early inscriptions in the New World written in Ogham, a language from medieval Ireland, would be published soon in the Review of Archaeology by David Kelley. That article has now been published (Spring 1990, pp. 1-10), and even though it is a rather technical discussion, you may want to examine it.

Violent End To Maya Civilization?
Violent End To Maya Civilization?
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
A May 26 article in the Washington Post reports on the archaeological research of Vanderbilt U. Prof. Arthur Demarest that shows that the Maya civilization may have collapsed much more violently and much more rapidly than previously thought. "The whole region was gripped by endemic warfare far more destructive than anything we had ever imagined," says Demarest. He believes that this collapse was related to overpopulation and poor soils.
Correction Or Clarification
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In the May 1991 issue of Insights, reference was made to Joseph Smith's New York Reputation Re-examined as "expressly anti-Mormon." Whereas affidavits reprinted and analyzed in this book may be considered "anti-Mormon," F.A.R.M.S. expresses no position about the book.
Antenantiosis In The Book Of Mormon
Antenantiosis In The Book Of Mormon
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Gail Call, one of our enthusiastic F.A.R.M.S. readers, has pointed out the presence in the Book of Mormon of an interesting figure of speech called antenantiosis. In this figure of speech, an expression is stated in terms of its negated opposite. The result is to express the positive in a very high degree, or as the biblical scholar E.W. Bullinger puts it, "We thus emphasize that which we seem to lessen" (Figures of Speech Used in the Bible [Baker Book House: Grand Rapids, 1989], pp. 159-64).

The Religious Studies Center at BYU sponsored a conference on Joseph Smith at the dedication of the new Joseph Smith Building on campus. Organized by Susan Easton Black, associate professor of Ancient Scripture at BYU, the conference was well attended and well received. Papers delivered at the conference have been published by the center and Bookcraft, and F.A.R.M.S. has arranged to reprint one of the chapters that particularly sheds light on the Book of Mormon.
