The stresses and strains placed upon American society by World War II are studied in microcosm by a detailed look at the effects of the conflict on the small central Washington town of Ellensburg, Washington. The war disrupted the normal workings of society as men entered the armed forces in great numbers and families moved from town to town in order to staff military bases and mad defense industries. The entire society geared up for the war effort. The business community, farmers, and the military all faced great changes. Also, homelife and social life reacted to wartime pressures. The study …

The Trial Of General Tomoyuki Yamashita: A Case Study In Command Responsibility, L. H. Redford

The case of General 'Tomoyuki Yamashita, the subject of this thesis, established a precedent in international law, at least so far as the United States respected that law, Its successful prosecution prepared the way for the prosecution of numerous, subsequent war crimes cases, upon a standard of liability developed and approved by the United States in Yamashita, and without regard for the attenuated procedural protections granted in American civil courts. General Mac-Arthur played an important part in Yamashita’s trial, and this essay shall also discuss the extent of his interest and involvement in the case.

When Hitler came to power, one of the aims of Nazi propaganda was to make his new order acceptable to the powers abroad, before preparing the ground for his expansionist moves. The purpose of this study is to examine the causes of belligerency in Kentucky in this period of diplomatic crisis, thus examining the second level of causation for the war as suggested by Brown's study. The test case used is Kentucky which was known as one of the states most anxious for war against Britain, both in Congress and in the state itself. However, this study will not attempt to interpret the role of the state's representatives in the Congress of the United States, since, if Brown is correct in his interpretation, the causes of public belligerency had little to …

This study is an attempt to combine the disciplines of Asian history and United States diplomatic history in analyzing the 1871 Korean-American Incident. The Incident revolves around the Low-Rodgers expedition to Korea, and the subsequent breakdown of peaceful negotiations into a military clash of arms.

To describe the Incident as merely another example of American "imperialism,'' or as a result of narrow-minded Korean isolationism, is to oversimplify its causes and miss the larger implications that can be learned from it. This paper examines factors which influenced the United States decision to intervene int he Korean crisis of June 1950. It stresses the relationship between events in Korea and prevailing Soviet-American tensions. Truman administration foreign policy, Congressional attitudes, and public opinion are also analyzed to determine both their relative effect on the Korean decision and their reaction to the decision.

This paper concentrates on the political, economic, and military policies of New France (French Canada) towards the Indian tribes inhabiting and bordering New France during the period 1672-1701. It was a period of intensive exploration coupled with the fur trade, principally beaver, both of which activities spurred France to compel its "province" of New France to make alliances with the Indians and to block penetration of the French-claimed area by the English colonists to the south (New York and New England) and to the north (Hudson's Bay area).
