The Effect Of Vitamin D Supplementation On Serum 25(Oh)D And Its Association With Stress Fractures In High-Risk, Physically Active Adults: A Critically Appraised Topic, Connor Lewis, Martha Yost, Aric J. Warren
The Effect Of Vitamin D Supplementation On Serum 25(Oh)D And Its Association With Stress Fractures In High-Risk, Physically Active Adults: A Critically Appraised Topic, Connor Lewis, Martha Yost, Aric J. Warren
Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association
Clinical Scenario: In collegiate athletic and military populations alike, the repetitive and intense training increase the risk of experiencing a stress fracture, representing a significant time loss and financial cost. Research suggests the use of supplemental vitamin D to prevent the occurrence of stress fractures in high-risk adults. Clinical Question: In high risk, physically active adults, does the effect of vitamin D supplementation on serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration effect the occurrence of stress fractures? Clinical Bottom Line: The findings suggest that clinicians should consider the use of supplemental vitamin D as a protective measure against the occurrence of stress …

A Comparison Of Novel Treatment Interventions To Improve Hamstring Range Of Motion, Sadie Buboltz-Dubs, Brittney Dejong, William S. Gear
Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association
Purpose: Perceived hamstring tightness is a prevalent condition caused by multiple factors, including anterior pelvic tilt and neural tension. Traditional treatments, such as static stretching, do not address these underlying conditions. This study aimed to determine the short-term effectiveness of two neuromuscular treatment techniques for increasing hamstring flexibility compared with a traditional static stretching technique. Methods: Hamstring range of motion was measured using PSLR and AKE pre-and post-intervention for two treatment sessions and again as a single discharge measurement one week after the first treatment session. Three treatments were studied: Primal Reflex Release Technique, Neurodynamic Sliding Technique, Static Stretching, …

Racial Disparities Among Pregnant Women Of Color And Their High Risk For Developing Periodontal Disease, Darrylnn Mayo
Pacific Journal of Health
This qualitative study explored the oral health experiences of four women of color during their pregnancies. Data was collected through interviews and presented as case studies. Although existing literature indicated that pregnant women of color are at a higher risk for developing periodontal disease, the participants in this case study reported actively engaging with their dental care providers, daily intake of prenatal vitamins with practice of self-oral care, and compliance with oral hygiene instructions. Further studies should investigate larger sample populations with broader minority ethnic groups to help explore the determinants of racial disparities and strategize ways to reduce barriers …
Optimizing Patient Adherence Through Improved Technology-Based Communication By Enhancing Staff Efficiency At An Opiate Treatment Program Clinic, Jennifer Parsons
Optimizing Patient Adherence Through Improved Technology-Based Communication By Enhancing Staff Efficiency At An Opiate Treatment Program Clinic, Jennifer Parsons
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
High rates of missed appointments and unreliable follow-up remain a problem in outpatient opioid treatment clinics. This project improved the communication workflow at a methadone maintenance clinic by strengthening reminder systems and staff coordination. A needs assessment found several problems: appointment reminders were inconsistent, tracking was unreliable, and staff communication often relied on manual handoffs. The project was to test a technology-based workflow designed to improve staff communication and reduce missed appointments. The Technology Acceptance Model and Lewin’s Change Theory guided the change. The clinic implemented automated reminders, secure messaging, and clearer documentation to support daily communication. A pre-post evaluation …

Addressing Faculty Gaps In The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program, Shea Brock
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Graduate nursing programs increasingly rely on adjunct faculty to sustain enrollment growth; however, inconsistent onboarding processes may contribute to variability in faculty preparedness and job satisfaction. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to implement a standardized adjunct faculty education program and evaluate its impact on adjunct faculty knowledge and job satisfaction within an online Psychiatric–Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) program. A quantitative, quasi-experimental one-group pre–post design was utilized. Six adjunct faculty members (n = 6) completed a 10-item EXXAT Knowledge Survey and a 10-item Faculty Satisfaction Survey before and after participation in a structured one-hour education session focused …

Background: Upper extremity return to sport (RTS) assessments are not standardized with respect to which metrics to use, if the metrics are appropriate for all populations and levels of competition, and what constitutes good or poor test performance. Subsequently, clinicians may utilize suboptimal metrics to evaluate RTS readiness, or forgo objective criteria altogether. The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties (reliability, agreement/measurement error, hypothesis testing/construct validity, criterion/predictive validity, responsiveness) of upper extremity functional tests used to assess RTS readiness.
Methods: This systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines, with all studies included assessed via the PEDro scale. Literature …

Gradual reduction of cerebral blood flow occurs with aging, and it is a major cause of vascular dementia, a group of dementias with a cerebrovascular component. Interestingly, patients who have suffered a vascular insult may develop retinopathy, which may occur as an early symptom of vascular dementia. Several rodent models using young animals have been generated to mimic retinopathy caused by cerebral hypoperfusion; however, given that aging is an important factor in developing vascular dementia and hypoperfusion retinopathy, we propose to use aged (17-month-old) mice in a model of cerebral hypoperfusion. In this model, we implant two metallic micro-coils (0.16 …

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, partly because many patients are diagnosed at late stages, highlighting the urgent need for effective early detection and intervention strategies. Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT)-based screening reduces lung cancer mortality in high-risk populations defined by age and smoking history; however, the uptake of LDCT remains low among eligible individuals. Compounding this issue, modelling studies estimate that nearly half of lung cancers occur in individuals who do not meet eligibility criteria for LDCT-based lung cancer screening under current guidelines. Moreover, LDCT-based screening has inherent limitations, including a high rate of false-positive results …

Bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane (BCP) boronic esters are crucial intermediates for accessing BCP-containing drugs with improved pharmacokinetic profiles, yet their synthesis typically relies on pre-formed redox-active esters derived from carboxylic acids. Here we report a general, single-step method for the direct conversion of carboxylic acids into BCP boronic esters. Upon irradiation of carboxylic acids with [1.1.1]propellane and bis(pinacolato)diboron (B2pin2) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), BCP boronates are obtained in good yields, which are further enhanced by the addition of an iron catalyst. Mechanistic studies suggest that photolytic cleavage of a B2pin2–DMSO complex initiates decarboxylation via hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), while iron catalysis enables a …

SUPT16H encodes a subunit of the FACT (FAcilitates Chromatin Transcription) complex, a histone chaperone essential for maintaining chromatin integrity during transcription, replication, and DNA repair. Pathogenic de novo SUPT16H missense variants have previously been linked to neurodevelopmental disorders in eight individuals. Here, we expand the genotypic and phenotypic spectrum by identifying 24 additional individuals harboring ultrarare heterozygous missense or truncating variants, who share overlapping clinical features including intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, hypotonia, and characteristic craniofacial dysmorphism. To elucidate the underlying mechanisms, we generated a supt16h knockout zebrafish model using CRISPR/Cas9. The supt16h loss-of-function (LOF) model recapitulated key patient phenotypes …

Navigating (M)Otherhood: Perception, Practice, & Policy Of Adolescent Pregnancy In The North Coast Of Perú, Mahir Rahman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
“It’s a vicious circle”, the obstetricians of Huanchaco repeated time and time again after discussing a recently pregnant 13-year-old girl who had just moved to the North Coast of Perú. Adolescent pregnancy is an extremely stigmatized topic in global maternal and child health discourse. Pregnant adolescents are subject to educational policy, clinical protocol, and community practice. While global scholarship emphasizes adolescent pregnancy prevention, limited scholarship focuses on the conditions in which adolescent pregnancy is perceived, discussed, and managed. More importantly, these perspectives are even less documented amongst the North Coast of Perú.
This thesis serves as an ethnographic exploration of …

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT)-guided online stereotactic adaptive radiotherapy (CT-STAR) allows for ablative radiation doses to be delivered to selected patients with borderline resectable (BR) or locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC) or unresectable pancreatic cancer. However, the use of CT-STAR to deliver an ablative dose to the pancreas while minimizing gastrointestinal (GI) side effects to reduce acute and late toxicity rates compared to historic controls has yet to be prospectively evaluated.
OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this prospective, single-arm, multicenter phase 2 clinical trial (Adaptive Radiation Therapy Individualized Approach [ARTIA]-Pancreas) is to evaluate the rate of acute grade 3+ GI toxicity …

AIMS: In the phase 3 KEYNOTE-689 trial (NCT03765918) among patients with resectable locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (LA HNSCC), perioperative pembrolizumab (pembrolizumab before surgery, then continued with standard-of-care [SOC] radiotherapy +/- cisplatin after surgery followed by pembrolizumab alone) significantly prolonged event-free survival vs. SOC alone, both in the intention-to-treat population and PD-L1 combined positive score (CPS) ≥1 subgroup. Perioperative pembrolizumab + SOC received Food and Drug Administration approval in June 2025 for resectable LA HNSCC expressing PD-L1 (CPS ≥ 1). The present study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of perioperative pembrolizumab + SOC versus SOC in this indication, from …

Quality Improvement Project: Integrating Modified Early Warning Score (Mews) Criteria Into A Local Community College's Nursing Curriculum, Breanna C. Bell
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
There is an international priority for early recognition of patient deterioration with adequate responses to facilitate patient safety. The modified early warning score (MEWS) tool is commonly used to identify and respond to acute patient deterioration, so it is effective to educate nursing students on its use to influence their future practice. However, there is a lack of a curriculum to integrate MEWS criteria for associate degree in nursing (ADN) students at a local community college. This quality improvement project aimed to enhance ADN faculty’s self-efficacy and ability to integrate MEWS criteria into the didactic curriculum at a community college …

Background
In 2020–2021, both Mexico and the United States implemented similar, newly formatted nutrition facts labels (NFLs). Mexico simultaneously implemented front-of-package warning labels (FoPWLs), which emphasize high amounts of less healthy nutrients described in NFLs (e.g., calories, sugar, salt, trans fat, and saturated fat) to enhance consumer understanding of nutrition information. Objectives
To evaluate these policies by comparing pre- and postpolicy trends in self-reported responses to NFLs.Methods
Annual surveys from the adult International Food Policy Study (2018–2023) were analyzed for Mexico (n = 24,832) and the United States (n = 25,464). Outcomes included reported ease of finding …Pre- To Post-Season Changes In Body Composition Among Division Iii Football Players, Sebastian Schaefer, Cesar Navarro, Edward Merritt

A Comparative Analysis Of Maladaptive Perfectionism In Male And Female Competitive Bodybuilders, Maddox B. Utter, Christian O. Quintero, Samantha S. Dardaman, Stephen E. Rowden, Scott B. Martin
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Bodybuilding is a sport focused on physique optimization, where success is determined by judges’ evaluations of muscle mass, symmetry, and definition. Due to the sport’s emphasis of physical aesthetics, bodybuilders may feel the need to compare themselves with other competitors. This evaluation and comparison of physique may expose athletes to maladaptive perfectionistic tendencies, such as setting unattainably high standards, excessive worry over mistakes, and a diminished sense of competence. While current bodybuilding literature is limited, previous research suggests that perfectionism may lead to psychological impairments (e.g., body dysmorphia, anxiety, and reduced self-confidence) which may manifest differently between male and female …

How Does The Stage Of Pregnancy Influence Gait And Sway In Pregnant Women From Six To Eight Months., Lilie-Rose S. Gilbert, Scott P. Mclean, Edward Merritt
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Physiological changes that affect gait, posture, and balance during the late stages of pregnancy increase the risk of falling. These changes were examined across the stages of pregnancy using simulated pregnancy loading. PURPOSE: To compare gait and postural balance measures under three loading conditions simulating zero, 6, and 8-months of simulated pregnancy. We predicted that the added weight in late-stage pregnancy would adversely affect gait characteristics and reduce postural control. METHODS: Twenty-one healthy females (20.1±1.2 years, 1.79±0.11 m, 64.1±9.5 kg) completed a 10-m walking gait assessment. They then completed three trials under each condition, including the Stability Evaluation Test (SET) …

Resistance training is a powerful stimulus that is known to induce a myriad of positive effects in humans. A popular result desired by athletes is to increase muscle mass. However, the existing literature on resistance training and muscular hypertrophy focuses on whole body lean mass changes. The body of work which elucidate the effect of training on segmental lean mass is less documented. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of a short-term resistance training intervention on segmental lean mass in previously untrained college aged women. METHODS: 22 college aged women (age: 21 ± 4) volunteered …

Changes In Ankle Angle And Knee Angle Throughout Gait With Ankle Bracing And Ankle Taping, Genavieve T. Evans, Tristyn G. Kattawar, Scott Mclean
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Ankle taping and ankle bracing are the most common solutions to chronic ankle instability and ankle injuries, however, scientific findings suggest that changes in the individual’s gait patterns can occur with the addition of ankle restrictions. PURPOSE: to compare the effects of ankle bracing and taping with no support to lower extremity joint kinematics while walking on a treadmill. METHODS: Seventeen collegiate athletes (19.9 yrs, 1.74 m, 71.2 kg) completed walking trials on a treadmill under three ankle support conditions; no support, ankle taping, and ankle brace. Ankle and knee angles were measured during the walking trials using electrogoniometers. Peak …

Introduction: A routine exercise program has been recommended across all demographic groups to improve cardiovascular health, muscle function, cognitive function, and mental health. Purpose: This study examined how personalized exercise affects health-related fitness parameters. Method: A total of 17 patients (age=42.88±12.89 years, male=1, and females=16), attending the fitness program at a regional hospital, were recruited. A health-related fitness battery test, including cardiorespiratory endurance, resting heart rate and blood pressure, motor fitness, musculoskeletal fitness, flexibility, body composition, and balance, was administered at the pre- (week 0), mid- (week 4), and post-study (week 8) periods. Results: Body fat (%) significantly decreased by …

Recreational pickleball participation has increased substantially among adult women; however, limited research exists examining neuromuscular performance in this population. PURPOSE: The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility of assessing lower body muscular power, maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) of the biceps and triceps brachii, grip strength, and reaction time in active pickleball-playing women compared to sedentary women to inform future research. METHODS: Ten participants (pickleball n=5, sedentary n=5) visited the laboratory to complete anthropometric measurements, lower body power assessment using a standardized sit-to-stand protocol with a Power Tendo device, and upper-extremity assessments including MVC for elbow flexion …
