Navigating Care In Cancer: Aligning Rehabilitation And Exercise To Support Patients, Christopher M. Wilson
Navigating Care In Cancer: Aligning Rehabilitation And Exercise To Support Patients, Christopher M. Wilson
Oncology Rehabilitation in Practice
The growing evidence base supporting both exercise oncology and cancer rehabilitation highlights their complementary roles across the cancer continuum. Research consistently demonstrates that physical activity improves physical function, fatigue, quality of life, and survival, while rehabilitation addresses impairments and restores participation in meaningful activities. Despite these advances, current care models often lack coordination, resulting in fragmented services, inappropriate referrals, and missed opportunities for optimal patient outcomes. Some individuals are directed to exercise programs without adequate screening for underlying impairments, while others may receive rehabilitation services when supervised, independent or community-based activity would suffice.
To address these gaps, there is a …

Dementia Detection In Low-Resource Languages: Evaluating Translation-Assisted Transfer Learning For Multilingual Clinical Assessment, Kylar A. Deloach
Dementia Detection In Low-Resource Languages: Evaluating Translation-Assisted Transfer Learning For Multilingual Clinical Assessment, Kylar A. Deloach
Honors Theses
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a growing global health concern, with millions of people affected worldwide and cases expected to rise significantly in the coming decades. Early detection is critical for patient treatment and care, and recent advances in natural language processing (NLP) have shown promise in identifying linguistic markers associated with AD. However, most existing work has focused on English, leaving speakers of other languages with limited access to such tools. This study investigates how effective AD detection models trained on English data are at transferring to Greek, a low-resource language with limited dementia-related speech data available. We propose a …
The Role Of Dollar Store Proliferation In Influencing Diabetes And Obesity Rates In West Virginia, Kelli L. Keith
The Role Of Dollar Store Proliferation In Influencing Diabetes And Obesity Rates In West Virginia, Kelli L. Keith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Dollar stores are the fastest growing food retail format and are highly concentrated in rural, low-income communities including West Virginia, where diabetes and obesity prevalence rank among the highest in the United States. Although these retailers increase physical access to food, concerns remain about their limited healthier food options and potential contribution to chronic disease disparities. Guided by the socioecological model, this three-manuscript dissertation examined how dollar store density and healthier food availability related to county-level diabetes and obesity prevalence in West Virginia. Manuscript 1 used a cross-sectional ecological design with all 55 West Virginia counties, using data from USDA, …

The Correlation Of Beer, Wine, And Liquor Excise Tax With Alcohol-Impaired Traffic-Related Deaths In All 50 U.S. States, Paul R. Amigh Ii
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Alcohol-impaired driving remains a persistent public health and safety problem in the United States, resulting in thousands of preventable deaths each year and substantial societal costs. Policymakers frequently rely on alcohol excise taxes as a deterrence strategy; however, evidence regarding the effectiveness of taxation alone in reducing alcohol-impaired traffic fatalities remains mixed. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study, grounded in economic deterrence theory, was to assess relationships between state-level beer, wine, and liquor excise tax rates and alcohol-impaired traffic fatality rates per 100,000 population in 2019. A cross-sectional design used secondary data from all 50 U.S. states and the …

Staff Education On Structured Phq-9 Administration To Enhance Depression Screening In Outpatient Mental Health Care, Zekarias F. Abessa
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In outpatient mental health settings, inconsistent use of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) due to gaps in knowledge and lack of standardized training can lead to missed opportunities for early identification of depression and delayed treatment. Mental health nurses play a key role in screening and early intervention, underscoring the criticality of this role in practice. The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project explored whether a structured PHQ-9 staff education program could improve staff knowledge compared to baseline practice. The project involved using an intervention-based quality improvement design to enhance staff knowledge of administering and interpreting the PHQ-9 screening tool. …

Secondhand smoke exposure can significantly worsen asthma outcomes in pediatric patients, leading to increased exacerbations and healthcare utilization. Caregivers can play a critical role in reducing secondhand smoke exposure, however sustained smoking cessation can be challenging to achieve. Two powerful healthcare interventions to assist in caregiver smoking cessation include motivational interviewing and educational handouts, however their compared effectiveness has not yet been fully reviewed. This scoping review compared the effectiveness of motivational interviewing and educational handouts in promoting smoking cessation among caregivers of children hospitalized for asthma exacerbations over the course of 90 days.

Staff Education On The Implementation Of Walking Interventions, Cynthia Ononobi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The doctoral project was a staff education project aimed at improving the knowledge of psychiatric nurses on the use of structured walking interventions to manage depression. The practice problem was related to the lack of consistency in the application of walking as a treatment for depression. This gap was significant to address because psychiatric nurses are in the center of behavioral activation, and insufficient knowledge may deny patients the right to potentially valuable, affordable, and nonpharmacological treatment. The practice-based question was: Among psychiatric nursing staff does education on structured walking intervention, compared to standard care, improve staff knowledge and skills …

Purpose/Background
Patients with diabetes mellitus are significantly more prone to delayed gastric emptying, which can increase their risk for aspiration events in the operating room despite following standard fasting guidelines set by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). Using point-of-care gastric ultrasound, trained providers can quickly and accurately evaluate gastric volumes and risk-stratify patients based on these findings. However, these methods have not been clearly assessed in the diabetic population. The purpose of this scoping review is to map the existing evidence on the use of gastric ultrasound findings among adult patients with diabetes undergoing anesthesia.

Purpose/Background
Spinal anesthesia is widely used in surgical practice because it provides effective anesthesia and analgesia while reducing the need for intravenous anesthesia. Opioids are commonly used as intrathecal adjuvants; however, their use is associated with adverse effects such as pruritus, postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), urinary retention, and respiratory depression. Dexmedetomidine, a selective α2-adrenergic agonist, has gained attention as an alternative to opioids due to its sedative and analgesic properties without the opioid side effect profile. This scoping review evaluates current evidence comparing intrathecal Dexmedetomidine and opioids as adjuvants to spinal anesthesia in adult surgical patients.

Investigating The Synthesis And Antibacterial Activity Of A Main-Chain Cationic Polymer, Emily Smith
Investigating The Synthesis And Antibacterial Activity Of A Main-Chain Cationic Polymer, Emily Smith
Honors Theses
Antibiotic resistance is a growing threat to public health. Due to the overuse of antibiotics in agriculture, the overprescription of antibiotics, and the misuse of antibiotics by patients, antibiotic resistance is spreading at an alarming rate. As antibiotic resistance spreads, the antibiotics we depend on to treat common infections become ineffective. Therefore, it is imperative to develop novel treatments for infections that do not increase the prevalence of antibiotic resistance. One treatment being explored is the use of synthetic polymers with antibacterial properties. Synthetic polymers are advantageous because they can be synthesized from widely available precursors and their structure is …
Cleft Palate And The Coordination Of Wnt Signaling And Pax9 In Murine Palatogenesis, Landon Wyatt
Cleft Palate And The Coordination Of Wnt Signaling And Pax9 In Murine Palatogenesis, Landon Wyatt
Honors Theses
Cleft palate is a common craniofacial birth defect that arises when the molecular and morphogenetic events guiding secondary palate formation lose coordination during a narrow developmental window. In mice, successful palatogenesis requires the paired palatal shelves to grow vertically, elevate above the tongue, and fuse at the midline; disruption of any of these steps can result in clefting. Two important regulators of this process are canonical Wnt signaling and the transcription factor Pax9, both of which contribute to normal palatal mesenchymal growth and patterning during early development. This paper first examines whether altered Dkk1/Wnt signaling contributes to the Pax9-null palate …

Networks are comprised of interrelated entities that are not easily separable, producing complex, structured data. These can be seen in social groups, highway systems, and even in biological systems. This paper surveys concepts in graph theory for application to the analysis of network data to understand disease. The features of graphs provide a useful framework for thinking about relationships between different genes or proteins. The structure of graphs is also compatible with a variety of machine learning tools. Especially …

Prevalence Of Low Energy (Lea) Risk In Division Iii Female Distance Athletes, Ciara Murphy
Masters Theses/Capstone Projects
Context
Low energy availability (LEA) occurs when energy intake is insufficient to support normal physiological functions after exercise (Loucks, 2011). Prolonged LEA can negatively affect metabolic functions, reproductive health, and bone density, and contribute to the development of the female athlete triad and relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S) (Papageorgiou, 2017).
Objective
The objective of this study was to explore the prevalence of LEA among Division III female distance athletes.
Design
Cross-sectional study
Setting
Online questionnaire administered through Qualtrics
Participants
A total of 12 Division III female distance athletes (ages 18-23).
Intervention
Anonymous, electronic questionnaire assessing symptoms associated with low …
