Biological Factors Involved In The Absenteeism Of Children From Stockton Public Schools, Fae-Belle Coudeyre

Every state has a compulsory school attendance law, and yet at any time during the school year approximately 12 percent of the children will not be in school - cannot very well be in school, because of some physical, mental, or emotional handicap, either temporary or permanent.
These absentees are what are now often called the “exceptional” children, including the blind and partially-blind, the deaf and hard-of-hearing, the speech-defective, the crippled, the delicate, the epileptic, the mentally deficient, those with serious social maladjustments, together with those who are temporarily out of school because of a disease or accident. [From the Purpose] The purpose of this study is to investigate the occurrence of fatal pulmonary embolism in patients coming to autopsy in the New Haven Hospital during the eighteen year period from 1935 to 1953, inclusive; and to explore briefly the historical, clinical, and experimental basis for the attempt to remove surgically emboli from the pulmonary artery (Trendelenberg Operation).
