A Psychiatrist Listens To Dental Complaints, Henry D. Lederer Jan 1968

A Psychiatrist Listens To Dental Complaints, Henry D. Lederer

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

When your chairman invited me to meet with you to discuss some issues connecting psychiatry and dentistry, my immediate response was both intense and almost reflexive. I experienced an immediate strong uneasiness and desire to avoid facing you. This reaction impressed me as being neither rational nor appropriate, since my more sensible side could see good reasons for an exchange of views between dentists and psychiatrists. Therefore, as is the custom of most of us working in psychiatry, I tried to examine my own reaction, and in doing so came upon thoughts and feelings which indicated that I do not …

Lasting Biological Effects Of Early Influences, René Dubos Jan 1968

Lasting Biological Effects Of Early Influences, René Dubos

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In conclusion: The environment does more than affect our well-being in the here and now. It molds the young, physically and mentally, and thereby determines almost irreversibly their future and the evolution of society.

The Surgical Management Of Hirschsprung's Disease, Lester W. Martin Jan 1968

The Surgical Management Of Hirschsprung's Disease, Lester W. Martin

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The operative technique which we have employed for 17 children with Hirschsprung's disease is presented. The procedure offers certain advantages over the original Duhamel operation and over the classic Swenson operation. It can be recommended as a safe operation for Hirschsprung's disease, and, in our experience, has given satisfactory results.

A Brief History Of The Taxonomy Of Mammals, Jack D. Burke Jan 1968

A Brief History Of The Taxonomy Of Mammals, Jack D. Burke

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The mammals are an ancient division of the animal kingdom. They probably developed from reptile-like creatures in the early Triassic period, about 200 million years ago. Ever since then they have been changing to meet different and varying conditions of climate, enemies, and many other factors. Of the more than one million animals known in the entire animal kingdom, the 4,000 or so species of mammals represent a small minority.

The Potability Of Sea Water, A. V. Wolf Jan 1968

The Potability Of Sea Water, A. V. Wolf

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Thirsty men adrift or lost on desert shores frequently experiment with drinking sea water--especially after the third day--without harm if only small quantities are taken. But such experimentation is difficult to control, and, when in a group, individuals often drink furtively at night. The fleeting relief it affords gives way to an ever more ardent thirst and more copious drinking. This May be succeeded by silence and apathy. The eyes take on a fixed and glass expression; the breath, an offensive odor. Then delirium begins – first quiet, later violent – and consciousness is gradually lost. At some time froth …

Abortion: Medical And Moral Aspects, Geoffrey T. Mann Jan 1968

Abortion: Medical And Moral Aspects, Geoffrey T. Mann

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In any event, all abortion laws--especially the newer laws--are rather elastic. I presume that they will be applied rigidly or leniently depending upon the attitude of the physician. Given a liberal attitude, I suppose the deciding factor would be whether the woman concerned wishes to have the baby or prefers to terminate the pregnancy. I have a feeling that any woman in the United States today who takes the latter attitude will have an abortion, therapeutic or non-therapeutic, medical or lay. In the long run, legislation against abortions is like any legislation against sin; it is commendable but ineffectual.

A Histochemical Study Of Skin Wounds, Abdullah Fatteh Jan 1968

A Histochemical Study Of Skin Wounds, Abdullah Fatteh

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The experimental results in guinea pigs confirm Raekallio's findings. It is clear from the results that the enzyme reactions are the earliest detectable changes in the healing wounds. The non-specific esterase gives earlier staining reaction than any other enzyme studied so far. It is quite possible that a study of other enzymes may reveal even earlier detectable reactions.

The Ambient Air, Edith Iglauer Jan 1968

The Ambient Air, Edith Iglauer

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Dogs, rats, mice, guinea pigs, donkeys, men, women, and children--a whole world breathing, and nobody knows exactly what we are breathing or exactly how it affects us. Dr. Robert Horton, an epidemiologist who was formerly a professor at the University of Michigan and now presides, from a desk in Cincinnati, over the government's Health Effects Research Program, spent several hours discussing the progress of air-pollution research with a caller not long ago, and then, in a matter-of-fact voice, said, "The British reduced cholera and typhoid in the nineteenth century before they knew bacteria existed, and we may have to regulate …

Histamine And A Possible Unity Of Autonomous Microcirculatory Dilator Responses: Histamine And Autonomous Dilation, Richard W. Schayer Jan 1968

Histamine And A Possible Unity Of Autonomous Microcirculatory Dilator Responses: Histamine And Autonomous Dilation, Richard W. Schayer

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In this paper I will try to show how the proposed intrinsic dilator mechanism may, with due allowance for a variety of modifying factors, underlie the dilator phases of reactive hyperemia, post-exercise hyperemia, hyperemia due to local warmth, autoregulation, vasomotion, inflammation, and shock. These ideas are based on histamine studies (Schayer, 1962, 1963, 1966). However since there is much misunderstanding about histamine, and since the theory can be largely developed without need to identify the dilator, this paper will be presented in two parts. First, interpretation of the above phenomena in terms of intrinsic dilator mechanism will be attempted. Second, …

5-Flourouracil, A Tool In The Treatment Of Skin Cancer And Keratoses, Reuven K. Snyderman Jan 1968

5-Flourouracil, A Tool In The Treatment Of Skin Cancer And Keratoses, Reuven K. Snyderman

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

20% 5-Fluorouracil ointment in an acid mantle cream base is a useful tool for the treatment of multiple basal cell carcinomas and keratoses. The method of treatment to date is application twice a day for a period of 30 days. A second course of treatment can be applied to the same area or other areas. A more severe reaction occurs with the second and third course of treatment. The treatment removes the lesions which are present but in no way alters the skin, and those disposed to develop new lesions will probably continue to do so in the future.

Focal Glomerulonephritis, Robert H. Heptinstall Jan 1968

Focal Glomerulonephritis, Robert H. Heptinstall

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Focal glomerulonephritis is a form of glomerulonephritis in which only a certain number of glomeruli show lesions, the others being normal. It is a feature of most cases that the glomeruli affected show an involvement of only a portion of the tuft, a change that will be referred to as a local lesion. In general, focal glomerulonephritis can occur as a manifestation of well-recognized entities such as systemic lupus erythematosus, polyarteritis nodosa, subacute bacterial endocarditis, or Schönlein-Henoch syndrome; it can also occur apart from these diseases with a variety of clinical pictures (Heptinstall and Joekes, 1961).

Abortion: Legal Aspects, Thomas D. Jordan Jan 1968

Abortion: Legal Aspects, Thomas D. Jordan

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Because an abortion is the interruption of pregnancy at any time previous to the attainment of viability by the fetus, it is of legal as well as social, economic, moral, and religious interest. Abortions are divided into three classifications: spontaneous, therapeutic, and unlawful or criminal. The first involves no specific legal problem in itself, but the law relating to the criteria for a therapeutic abortion and what distinguishes it from a criminal one confronts the physician and hospital frequently.

Taxonomic Review : Miridae Of The Nevada Test Site And The Western United States, Harry H. Knight Jan 1968

Taxonomic Review : Miridae Of The Nevada Test Site And The Western United States, Harry H. Knight

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

Approximately 5,000 specimens of plant bugs were collected at the Nevada Test Site between 1959 and 1965. Greatest emphasis was given to collecting from June 10–24, 1965, when the desert areas at the test site were unusually profuse with blooming vegetation. A total of 160 species representing 50 genera was taken at the test site. Of these, 7 genera and 96 species are new to science.

Comparative data for these and additional species from other parts of western North America are also included. These represent an additional 449 species, of which 5 genera and 148 species are new to science. …

Conservative Management Of Chronic Renal Failure, Roscoe R. Robinson Jan 1968

Conservative Management Of Chronic Renal Failure, Roscoe R. Robinson

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The successful application of chronic dialysis and/or renal transplantation to patients with chronic uremia has sometimes obscured the fact that significant progress has also been made in our understanding of other therapeutic approaches to chronic renal failure. These less dramatic advances are commonly labeled "conservative" in nature, yet they have contributed decisively to the welfare of many uremic patients by improving their sense of wellbeing and delaying their need for such types of therapy as regularly repetitive dialysis. I shall comment first on certain general principles of management and then review some of the scientific therapeutic maneuvers and concepts that …

The Use Of A Computer In The Diagnosis Of Intracranial Tumours, G. H. Du Boulay Jan 1968

The Use Of A Computer In The Diagnosis Of Intracranial Tumours, G. H. Du Boulay

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Experiments in the use of a computer as an aid to diagnosis of intracranial tumours have been started at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in collaboration with The City University. The computer can estimate the probability that a patient has any given type of tumour by comparing the results of tests with those obtained in previous patients whose diagnoses have been established. The computer also determines which is the best investigation, from a statistical point of view, to perform next on the patient in order to confirm the diagnosis.
