Relation Of Tissue Typing To Results Of Clinical Transplants, Hyung M. Lee Jan 1969

Relation Of Tissue Typing To Results Of Clinical Transplants, Hyung M. Lee

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Current data reveal that, when matching is very good, there is also very good correlation in living related donor results, particularly in the sibling donor source. When there is slight mismatching, correlation is not as good; however, many patients seem to do well in spite of some mismatch. Correlation in the unrelated cadaver group is not as precise or significant. The current status of tissue typing is still not as precise as it should be, in order for us to rely on it as a selection criterion for renal homotransplantation. However, with rapidly advancing knowledge of antigen groups in the …

Protection For Animals In Biomedical Research, F. L. Thomsen Jan 1969

Protection For Animals In Biomedical Research, F. L. Thomsen

Laboratory Experiments Collection

Our conclusion from all of this work and study is that not just a small part, but that most of the suffering undergone by laboratory animals in "unnecessary" under the terms of the pain provisions of the Rogers-Javits bill. Granted, it will take some time and effort to bring about the necessary interpretations of these provisions. The Act, when passed, offers us the medium through which to obtain such interpretations.

This unnecessary suffering results mostly from the indifference, and from the inertia and the lack of proper scientific training and technical knowledge, of many of those conducting laboratory animal experiments …

Problems In Transportation Of Animals, Alice M. Wagner Jan 1969

Problems In Transportation Of Animals, Alice M. Wagner

Animal Welfare Collection

This afternoon we are considering the problems involved in the transportation of animals. Undoubtedly we have all had people problems as we travel by car, train and by air, and with the increase of travel things seem to be growing worse instead of better. I commuted from my home in New Jersey to Philadelphia for 18 1/2 years - a round trip of five hours - so I know plenty of things that can happen in transportation and commutation.

So it is with animals. An increasing number of animals are being shipped - shipped as pets, shipped as meat animals, …

Investigations On Congenital And Induced Osteopetrosis, Donald G. Walker Jan 1969

Investigations On Congenital And Induced Osteopetrosis, Donald G. Walker

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Osteopetrosis, or marble bone disease, is a disturbance of skeletal development in which the rate of bone resorption fails to keep pace with the rate of bone formation. Bone matrix accumulates excessively throughout the skeletal system, causing damage to neighboring tissues--particularly the dental, hematopoietic and nervous tissues. The line of investigation on osteopetrosis which has led to the current point of view that the thyroid gland represents the primary side of the disturbance was initiated soon after an experimental animal became available.

Social And Community Psychiatry And Its Effect On The Family, William W. Jepson Jan 1969

Social And Community Psychiatry And Its Effect On The Family, William W. Jepson

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Without further detailing the methodology, I would like to emphasize one point, i.e., a psychiatric crisis need no longer be considered the point of departure for a family member, but rather can be regarded as an entrée for helping the entire family to cope with interpersonal conflicts. With the kind of help offered in a mental health center, families as total units can often attain a better adjustment than before, and the illness stemming from interpersonal difficulty will not rest entirely on the scapegoat member. In summary, I should like to emphasize that modern psychiatry is beginning to see the …

Community Resources: The Role Of Other Professionals, Luther Christman Jan 1969

Community Resources: The Role Of Other Professionals, Luther Christman

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In this short paper an attempt has been made to sketch briefly some of the social forces affecting collaboration. A model of shared power has been suggested as a means of most effectively mobilizing the professional mental health manpower and of stimulating the growth of expertness. It is only one alternative among many. The behavioral scientists constantly are studying the best ways to harness human effort for the social good. The application of their findings to the problem of interdisciplinary collaboration may be a valuable means of improving patient care.

The Physician's Role In The Assessment Of Normal Behavior, Melvin Sabshin Jan 1969

The Physician's Role In The Assessment Of Normal Behavior, Melvin Sabshin

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

I am pleased to have this opportunity to talk to you about the physician's role in the assessment of normal behavior. One source of my appreciation relates to the fact that this topic is rarely discussed explicitly in symposia organized by psychiatrists for non-psychiatrist physicians. A major reason for underemphasis of this subject is that psychiatrists are quite divided in their perspectives and opinions regarding normal behavior. Not surprisingly, we psychiatrists are much more comfortable when talking to non-psychiatrists about the nuances of maladaptation or of emotional illness.

Cellular Rejection, James S. Wolf Jan 1969

Cellular Rejection, James S. Wolf

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Mounting experimental data suggest that the homograft reaction is intimately related to the small lymphocyte. It is evident that both the afferent and efferent arcs of transplant immunity are dependent upon the intactness of the lymphoid system. The lymphocyte has the ability to recognize the foreign antigen, is involved in the activity of cell-bound antibodies, and may be involved in the inductive processes leading to antibody formation.

The Use Of Pickled Wheat In Poultry Feeding, P Smetana

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

FEEDING fungicides to poultry can result in harmful effects, to the birds themselves, and to their human consumers.

To prevent such effects it is advisable that wheat pickled with fungicides should not be included in poultry rations.

Shed Lambing In The Esperance Environment, T Marshall, F. F. Dixon Jan 1969

Shed Lambing In The Esperance Environment, T Marshall, F. F. Dixon

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Neonatal lamb mortality is often high in Western Australia and losses as high as 33 per cent, have been recorded on private properties in the Esperance area. Surveys by Western Australian Department of Agriculture officers have indicated that more than threequarters of such lamb deaths occur after birth. About half these deaths result from the combined effects of weather and mismothering.

Work in Victoria has indicated that lamb mortality may be reduced by intensive lambing systems such as shedding and this trial was established to see if shedding could reduce lamb mortality in the Esperance environment.
