The Effect Of Labeling Disfluencies As 'Stuttering' And Contingent And Yoked "Wrong" On The Disfluencies Of Normal Speakers, Dennis Ray Staines
Dissertations and Theses
A labeling variable suggested by Wendell Johnson's "diagnosogenic" theory of the onset of stuttering was included in this study of the disfluencies of normal speaking college students in order to explore further the hypothetical relationship between normal disfluency and the onset of stuttering. A total of 60 Ss were randomly assigned to the following groups, each containing 10 Ss: I. Labeling Chastisement plus Contingent "wrong;" II. Labeling Chastisement plus Yoked (non-contingent) "wrong;" III. Labeling Chastisement - No "wrong;" IV. No Labeling Chastisement Contingent "wrong;" V. No Labeling Chastisement - Yoked "wrong;" VI. No Labeling Chastisement - No "wrong" …

Rubella Immunization Of Adult Females Using Hpv-77 Dk-12 Live Attenuated Rubella Virus, Donald A. Romig, E. L. Quinn, Frank Cox, Robert G. Brackett
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
This study demonstrates the serologic response as measured by the HAl test and the side reactions of the HPV-77 DK-12 live rubella vaccine in a small group of adult females. One hundred percent seroconversion was obtained using this vaccine. The mean titers obtained in two separate time periods post-vaccination are higher than those reported for several other rubella virus vaccines. A 66% occurrence of joint symptomatology was recorded post-vaccination with a mean duration of 11.6 days; 24% of women who received placebo reported joint complaints which had a mean duration of 2.0 days. The difference between these two rates is …
The Myology Of Sceloporus C. Clarki Baird And Girard (Reptilia: Iguanidae), Diane Marie Secoy
The Myology Of Sceloporus C. Clarki Baird And Girard (Reptilia: Iguanidae), Diane Marie Secoy
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
Examination of the complete musculature of Sceloporus clarki clarki Baird and Girard and seven other species of Sceloporus revealed variation among species of Sceloporus and between Sceloporus and other iguanid lizards. The muscles in which the greatest variation was found were the intermandibularis group, the constrictor colli, the episterno-cleido-mastoideus, the episternohyoideus, the coracoid head of the triceps, the costocoracoid and the flexor tibialis externus. This study indicates: (1) Sceloporus is more closely allied to Crotaphytus than to the ground-dwelling iguanines; (2) the possibility of the basal stock of Sceloporus being arboreal, and (3) Sceloporus is a genus in the process …
Observations On Uric Acid Transport In Man, The Dalmatian And The Non-Dalmatian Dog, Howard Duncan, April S. Curtis
Observations On Uric Acid Transport In Man, The Dalmatian And The Non-Dalmatian Dog, Howard Duncan, April S. Curtis
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The urinary output of uric acid from the purebred Dalmatian is similar in amount to that in man. Also, this breed of dog has a higher plasma uric acid level than other dogs and, like man, this hyperuricemia is accompanied more frequently with renal and bladder lithiasis. Allopurinol is effective therapy in both man and dog. Study of the fate of uric acid in the Dalmatian shows that the liver does not oxidize the available uric acid completely although it is capable of doing so when liver homogenates are studied. Consequently, the hepatic cellular membrane appears impermeable, or partially so, …

Gastrocolic And Duodenocolic Fistulas: An Experimental Study, Joseph L. Ponka, A. Karim Shaalan, P. C. Pesaros
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
In an experimental study of gastrocolic and duodenocolic fistulas, it was clearly seen in 10 animals that duodenocolic fistulas result in the most serious loss of nutrition. Death from starvation occurred in all 42 animals in 30 days. Gastrocolic fistulas similarly resulted in weight loss and death of the animals in an average of 42 days. Lengthy fistulas between the stomach and colon caused no obvious disturbances in the physiology of the gastrointestinal tract. The significant microscopic changes included destruction of the mucous membrane and a decrease in size of the villi. The other noteworthy observation was that fistulous aggregations …
Therapy Of Mycosis Fungoides, Harvey G. Shapero
Therapy Of Mycosis Fungoides, Harvey G. Shapero
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Mycosis fungoides is best viewed as a cutaneous lymphoma. Over a period of years, it progresses through three stages—the first consisting of red scaly patches, the second of pruritic plaques, and the third of brownish-red tumors. The therapy of each stage is outlined, and several selected modalities are discussed in detail, including topical steroids, systemic steroids, localized superficial irradiation, topical nitrogen mustard, electron beam, and chemotherapy (alkylating agents and antimetabolites.
Diagnosis And Treatment Of Gonorrhea, Paul A. Kvale
Diagnosis And Treatment Of Gonorrhea, Paul A. Kvale
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The various methods for diagnosis of gonorrhea are reviewed. Gram-stained smear of urethral exudate in the mate is appropriate, but for the female emphasis is placed on the use of culture on Thayer-Martin medium. Currently effective modalities of treatment are detailed, pointing out that higher doses of antibiotics are generally required for females with pelvic inflammatory disease than for males with acute gonococcal urethritis. The necessity for follow-up is also discussed.
An Improved Method Of Staining Paraffin-Embedded Bone Marrow Sections, Wanda Pusey, A. R. Villanueva
An Improved Method Of Staining Paraffin-Embedded Bone Marrow Sections, Wanda Pusey, A. R. Villanueva
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Cytological detail is well demonstrated in an improved method of staining aspirated bone marrow sections embedded in paraffin. The tinctorial patterns of the stain resemble some of its predecessors; thus, cell counting and identification involve little difficulty. The method has proven reliable, reproducible and a valuable addition in the diagnosis of bone marrow disorders. It is a useful tool in research problems in which objectives are the study of the bone marrow.
Cardioregulatory Role Of The Abdominal Ganglion Of Aplysia Californica, George Maeda
Cardioregulatory Role Of The Abdominal Ganglion Of Aplysia Californica, George Maeda
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
An isolated heart-abdominal ganglion preparation of this mollusc was developed and used to study the cardioregulatory function of the ganglion and nerves. The heart was perfused with artificial sea water through an atrial cannula and the gastro-esophageal artery was catheterized for blood pressure monitoring. The presence and cardioregulatory effects of axons in the nerves was investigated by electrical stimulation. Fine-tipped glass microelectrodes inserted into ganglionic neurons were used to determine the relationship between the neuronal and cardiac activities.
The principal results are listed below.
- Primarily inhibitory responses are obtained from both right and left connective stimulation, with some evidence for …

Foster Family Care For The Aged, Donald V. Sekora
Dissertations and Theses
The following was a research practicum instituted as an actual project for the State of Montana Welfare Department between June, 1970, and May, 1971. The project had a two-fold purpose in being conceived: one purpose was to fulfill a graduate school academic requirement; and the second purpose was to fulfill a responsibility to the people of Montana who would eventually gain some benefits from this project. The series of written documents that follow are the description of that project's conception and actualization in six Montana counties. The first part is the project idea and theory; the next two parts consist …

The Relationship Between Personality Factors Of Collegiate Football Players And Their Effectiveness On The Playing Field, Charles Williams
The Relationship Between Personality Factors Of Collegiate Football Players And Their Effectiveness On The Playing Field, Charles Williams
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Through the years there has been increasing interest in the investigation of the athlete's personality. Much emphasis has been placed on the psychological characteristics of athletes of a given age group and ability level. Coaches, trainers, and others involved with athletics believe that personality is an essential ingredient in developing a highly skilled individual. However, the ones in leadership seldom put forth explicit statements of such beliefs into a meaningful theory structure that can be assessed and therefore verified. Statement of the Problem: The purpose of this study was to determine whether differences in personality factors existed between groups of …

Hyperactivity In Children, Pat Luttmann
Hyperactivity In Children, Pat Luttmann
Student Scholarship
The provided document, written in 1971, explores the multifaceted nature of hyperactivity in children, primarily within the framework of minimal brain dysfunction or MBD. The author notes that while these children often appear physically normal, they struggle with a disorganized central nervous system that prevents them from processing environmental stimuli effectively. This neurological impairment manifests as a cluster of symptoms, most notably hyperkinesis, distractibility, impulsiveness, and emotional instability. The text emphasizes that the number of children identified with these disorders is increasing, partly due to medical advances that allow more children to survive difficult births.

Antibody Production Of Rats Fed Diets Of Varying Nutrient Density, Radharukmani
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Available evidence indicated that the deficiency of a specific nutrient in the diets adversely affect antibody production from a mild to severe degree. Studies of the effects of diet partially deficient in various essential nutrients on antibody response is meagre.
Twelve groups of weanling rats were fed with diets prepared by diluting the basal diet with 0 to 75 percent sucrose for 46 days and their antibody response was measured on the 28th, 40th and 46th day using Salmonella pullorum as the antigen. The rats fed the diet containing 75 percent sucrose and 25 percent basal diet had mean antibody …

Sub-Aversive Response Contingent Foot Shock As A Positive Reinforcer, Robert Lea Fulwiler
Sub-Aversive Response Contingent Foot Shock As A Positive Reinforcer, Robert Lea Fulwiler
All Master's Theses
Forty-eight rats were divided into 8 groups; four were maintained under normal conditions and the other four under sensory deprivation and tested at o, 3, 6, and 9 days after condition institution. The response was placing the head through a hole in the operant chamber and the stimulus (0, 1.2, 4, or 12 Vac) was contingent upon the response. Analysis ot variance disclosed significant differences (p<.01) between the deprived and the non-deprived groups at days 6 and 9; and a significant interaction between deprivation condition and time of test. No differences were shown between the stimulus intensities indicating that the stimulus did not have a reinforcing effect.

A study of 800 patients ranging in age from seven to one hundred years was conducted in the development of an anesthetic technique which combines the desirable qualities of a neuroleptic agent with the requirements of an outpatient oral surgical anesthetic. These requirements included rapidity of onset, effectiveness of action, ease of controlling duration, and rapid postoperative recovery.
Patients who were cleared medically for outpatient procedures were given Innovar 1.5 cc/150 lb of body weight, atropine 0.4 mg, and fentanyl 1.0 cc/150 lb of body weight as an initial dose within 30-45 seconds in a D5W drip by means of …
The Effect Of Early Postpartum Teaching Of Infant Feeding On Maternal Concern, Linda M. Richter, K. Judy Toews
The Effect Of Early Postpartum Teaching Of Infant Feeding On Maternal Concern, Linda M. Richter, K. Judy Toews
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
An experimental study was conducted on thirty primiparae during the postpartum period to determine if individualized instruction regarding infant feeding would result in a lower level of maternal concern in this area. The study sample was randomly and evenly divided into a control and an experimental group. It was statistically determined that the two groups were homogeneous in regard to age, education, occupation, previous information (prenatal classes and reading) and help at home. The experimental group received individualized instruction by the researchers concerning their chosen method of infant feeding on the second postpartum day. There was no instruction given the …
