Metabolic Role Of Sulfates And Sulfides Producing Bacteria In Pollution Of Waters, M. I. H. Aleem
Metabolic Role Of Sulfates And Sulfides Producing Bacteria In Pollution Of Waters, M. I. H. Aleem
KWRRI Research Reports
Cytochrome transport particles from Nitrobacter catalyzed nitrite, ascorbate as well as NADH oxidation with concomitant phosphate esterification yielding P/0 ratios of 1.0, 0.6 and 2.0 respectively. Phosphorylation coupled to nitrite oxidation was not effected by rotenone, amytal or antimycin while 50 and 70% inhibition of the NADH-linked phosphorylation was observed in the presence of HOQNO and rotenone respectively. Cell-free extracts from Nitrobacter also catalyzed an energy-dependent reduction of NAD+ by nitrite. The reduction of cytochrome c by NŌ2 was energy-dependent which involved the reversal of electrons from cytochrome a1. The subsequent energy-linked reduction of the flavoproteins …

Precipitable Hetero-Antibodies In Man To Animal Serum Proteins: Relation To Immunoglobulin Status, Hajime Hayashi, Gerald A. Logrippo, Mary Perry, Judene Mueller
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Immunologic studies show that man develops specific antibodies to a variety of serum proteins of bovine, sheep, goat, chicken, and rabbit origins as well as antibodies against cow's milk protein. The data in this report emphasize that these hetero-antibodies are more frequently found in individuals with immunological problems and/or chromosomal aberrations. The clinical significance of human hetero-antibodies against these animal proteins deserves closer clinical observation for an understanding of these immunological problems.

Intra-Abdominal Heterotopic Transplantation Of The Canine Heart, Rodman Taber, Nobuatsu Kouno, Jorge Simon
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Heterotopic transplantation of the dog heart to an abdominal location is a satisfactory experimental model for the study of immunosuppression. Rejection signs are readily detected by palpation and electrocardiographic monitoring.
Carcinoma Of The Fallopian Tube, Victor Gantus, Bruce H. Drukker, C. Paul Hodgkinson
Carcinoma Of The Fallopian Tube, Victor Gantus, Bruce H. Drukker, C. Paul Hodgkinson
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Seven cases of primary carcinoma of the fallopian tube have been reviewed and compared with cases previously reported in the literature. Sterility was present in 51% of patients. There was a variety of symptoms, but the most frequent was vaginal discharge, in 42% of patients. Two patients manifested urinary symptoms and one patient ascites. In six of our seven patients, an adnexal mass was present. Although clinical diagnosis will always be difficult one should be highly suspicious of this disease in patients between 40 and 60 years of age with these symptoms.
The Symmetry-Decision Method Of Eeg Analysis, Richard M. Lee
The Symmetry-Decision Method Of Eeg Analysis, Richard M. Lee
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
An improved version of a previously presented computer analysis for EEG is described. The basic process used in the analysis is the classification of waves according to duration (frequency) and amplitude. The unique aspect of the improved system is the distinction between "simple" waves and "composite" waves, which are slow waves with superimposed higher frequencies. The computer program makes this "decision" on the basis of wave symmetry.
Cecal Diverticulitis In The Japanese, Yasuhiko Kurosu, Tokio Suzuki, Toshinaka Koga
Cecal Diverticulitis In The Japanese, Yasuhiko Kurosu, Tokio Suzuki, Toshinaka Koga
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Four cases of diverticular disease of the colon are reported. The disease is rare in Japan and is more commonly seen in the cecum. Differential diagnosis of right lower quadrant pain and a filling defect in the cecum on x-ray examination is evidence of diverticular disease of the cecum. The future trend of the disease of the colon is predicted as increasing because of older populations, changes in diet and more frequent recognition through barium enema examination.

Mathematical Model Of Placental Oxygen And Carbon Dioxide Exchange, Ester P. Hill
Mathematical Model Of Placental Oxygen And Carbon Dioxide Exchange, Ester P. Hill
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This model of placental CO2 and O2 exchange calculates the time course of changes in PCO2, [HCO3-], and [H+] in each of four "compartments" of placental exchange vessels: maternal erythrocytes, maternal plasma, fetal plasma and fetal erythrocytes. The changes in hemoglobin-bound CO2 (carbamate) and oxyhemoglobin contents within the erythrocytes are also calculated, permitting consideration of the Haldane and Bohr effects. Equations were written to represent one-dimensional steady state CO2 and O2 diffusion between concurrent maternal and fetal capillaries and the subsequent hydration, carbamino and oxyhemoglobin reactions. The equations …

Local Control Of Pulmonary Resistance And Lung Compliance, Robert L. Coon
Local Control Of Pulmonary Resistance And Lung Compliance, Robert L. Coon
Dissertations (1934 -)
This study originated as a study of the effects of hypoxia and of various pharmacological agents on the pulmonary vasculature of the left lower lobe of the canine lung. Because the bronchomotor tone might also be affected, particularly by the pharmacological agents, it was decided as a secondary objective to also measure the effects of these agents on bronchomotor tone. It quickly became apparent that this was not as simple as it sounded. As no totally satisfactory method existed, a method of studying pulmonary mechanics in the left lower lobe in situ had to be developed. The effects of pump …

The Effects Of Legalized Abortion In England, J. Vincent O'Sullivan
The Effects Of Legalized Abortion In England, J. Vincent O'Sullivan
The Linacre Quarterly
Dr. O'Sullivan traces the process leading to the passage of the 1968 British Abortion Act and the consequences of that act with a view to helping the American medical profession learn from the British experience.
This article discusses the effect that legalized abortion has had upon the people, and particularly the physicians, in England. Although New York State, among others, has now legalized abortion, it has not had sufficient experience with it to adequately assess its effects. But the English have had sufficient experience with it, and its effects there indicate that attempts to legalize abortion demand close watching.

A Religious Pacifist Looks At Abortion, Gordon C. Zahn
The Linacre Quarterly
From the standpoint of the religious pacifist, Professor Zahn sees "elementary human rights" beginning at the "moment of conception marking the beginning of the individual's life process, " and argues against abortion from this point.

Life Control And Death Control, Definitions And The Dignity Of Man, Charles Carroll
The Linacre Quarterly
Rev. Carroll investigates the lack of acceptable, precise definitions of life, death, man in the discussions of life control and death control. The Christian must insist, he concludes, that such definitions and resultant standards of conduct safeguard the dignity and destiny of man.
