An Ecological Survey Of The Algae Of Huntington Canyon, Utah, Lorin E. Squires, Samuel R. Rushforth, Carol J. Endsley
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
A quantitative and ecological study of the algae of Huntington Canyon, Emery County, Utah, was conducted from March 1971 to April 1972. Net plankton, nannoplankton, periphyton, and visible attached algae were studied. Certain physical and chemical parameters in the waters of Huntington Creek and a small pond along its course were also measured.
Huntington Creek contains a wide diversity of genera and species of algae. Diatoms are the main constituent of the flora of this stream throughout the year. Hydrurus foetidus is prevalent in Huntington Creek from late winter to early summer, and filamentous blue green algae abound in the …

The Peregrine Falcon In Utah, Emphasizing Ecology And Competition With The Prairie Falcon, Richard D. Porter, Clayton M. White
The Peregrine Falcon In Utah, Emphasizing Ecology And Competition With The Prairie Falcon, Richard D. Porter, Clayton M. White
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
This study was undertaken to record the known history of the Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) in Utah as we have been able to construct it from both the literature and from our original research that extends over about a 30-year period in the state. The present total population of the peregrine in Utah is possibly only 10 percent of what it has been in historic times. In an effort to find explanations for the decline, we have explored hypotheses of climatic changes, impact of pesticides, disease, and human disturbances. We conclude that pesticide contamination and climatic changes may …

Breeding Ecology Of Raptors In The Eastern Great Basin Of Utah, Dwight G. Smith, Joseph R. Murphy
Breeding Ecology Of Raptors In The Eastern Great Basin Of Utah, Dwight G. Smith, Joseph R. Murphy
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
A comparative study of the breeding ecology of 12 raptor species was conducted in the eastern Great Basin from 1967-1970. The project was designed to determine the composition and densities, habitat selection, territoriality and predatory habits of raptorial birds in a semiarid environment. All topics were analyzed comparatively, relating the requirements and activities of the 12 raptor species.
Average yearly population densities of all species approximated 0.5 pairs per square mile, but much of the available habitat was not utilized. Predominant raptors were the Ferruginous Hawk and Great Horned Owl. Other important raptors included the Golden Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk and …

Special Report On Shipping Animals By Air
Special Report On Shipping Animals By Air
Special Reports
Animals are too often treated like just another piece of baggage, no more valuable than a suitcase or a mail sack. Missed or cancelled flights are seldom more than inconveniences to human passengers, but to animals they can mean death. The Humane Society has concluded that shippers and handlers will provide humane conditions and treatment only when forced to do so.

Complications Of Treated Cushing's Syndrome, Lewis B. Morrow, Raymond C. Mellinger, M. Saeed Zafar, Richmond W. Smith Jr.
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Fifty-two patients with Cushing's syndrome are reported with emphasis on post treatment complications. Seven patients, cured of their disease following appropriate therapy, had a recurrence of adrenal hypersecretion from one to ten years later. This occurred after all modalities of treatment, but was more common after sub-total adrenalectomy. Pituitary adenomas were found in two cases. Pseudotumor cerebri, psychiatnc complications, hyperthyroidism and hyperpigmentation were observed. One patient developed progressive hyperplgmentation despite pituitary radiation. Thirteen of fifty-two patients had malignant disease including three endometrial carcinomas, one rectal carcinoma and one adenocarcinoma of the mandible. Despite the remarkable improvement In the prognosis for …
Toxic Megacolon In Granulomatous Colitis, K. Anselm, S. A. Rosenblum, V. De Marco
Toxic Megacolon In Granulomatous Colitis, K. Anselm, S. A. Rosenblum, V. De Marco
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Acute, toxic dilatation of the colon in granulomatous colitis occurs more frequently than heretofore reported, and is a more serious complication than its counterpart in ulcerative colitis. Twenty-six patients who had toxic megacolon were seen at the Henry Ford Hospital between 1961 and 1971. Fourteen of these had ulcerative colitis and 12 had granulomatous colitis. Coricosteroids were relatively ineffective in these 12 patients and all but two needed surgical intervention. Postoperative complications occurred in two cases, with two deaths. Although the initial clinical picture between the two conditions is identical, the clinical course In those with granulomatous colitis is more …

An Investigation Of Handedness And Its Relationship To The Site Of Contact Ulcers, Colleen S. Colleary
An Investigation Of Handedness And Its Relationship To The Site Of Contact Ulcers, Colleen S. Colleary
Dissertations and Theses
This investigation attempted to determine the relationship of the site of contact ulcers and subject’s handedness. Literature concerned with contact ulcers has indicated that cerebral dominance tends to determine the site of the lesion. Four research questions were posed, two questions were presented in the form of the null hypothesis. The questions were: (1) Is the proportion of right-handed subjects with left-sided ulcers equal to the proportion of left-handed subjects with left-sided ulcers? (2) Is the proportion of right-handed subjects with right-sided ulcers equal to the proportion of left-handed subjects with right-sided ulcers? (3) Will the site of contact ulcers …
The Involvement Of Urinary Kallikrein In The Renal Escape From The Sodium Retaining Effect Of Mineralocorticoids, M. Marin-Grez, N. B. Oza, Oscar A. Carretero
The Involvement Of Urinary Kallikrein In The Renal Escape From The Sodium Retaining Effect Of Mineralocorticoids, M. Marin-Grez, N. B. Oza, Oscar A. Carretero
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
It is well known that the normal kidney "escapes" the sodium retaining effect of mineralocorticoids. However, the mechanism that mediates this "escape" is not understood. The possible role of kallikrein in this "escape" phenomenon was investigated by placing seven dogs in metabolic cages and giving them a constant sodium diet. After they had been on this diet three days, urine was collected for two 24-hour periods. DOCA (25 mg/day) was then given intramuscularly for five days. Urine was collected daily during this DOCA period and for two additional 24- hour periods. Urine volume, sodium, potassium, protein, and kallikrein excretion were …

The Theoretical Distribution Of Forces In The Rigid Component Of The Buccal Arch Positioner, Dennis H. Teruya
The Theoretical Distribution Of Forces In The Rigid Component Of The Buccal Arch Positioner, Dennis H. Teruya
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The distribution of an applied force to the rigid component of the Buccal Arch Positioner was determined with a theoretically formulated model. The rigid component was assumed to be a free body without the semi-rigid attachments and was evaluated at four points for the force distribution. The summation of the forces and the moments were equated to zero and were utilized to derive equations to solve for the unknown forces. The unknown forces at each point of the rigid component were solved for in terms of the given force applications.
A laterally directed force application at one of the posterior …

Development And Analyses Of A New Ideal Finishing Appliance, Robert M. Asatani
Development And Analyses Of A New Ideal Finishing Appliance, Robert M. Asatani
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new theoretical finishing appliance which should reduce the problems encountered during finishing with the present appliances. Maxillary and mandibular Buccal Arch Positioner appliances were constructed on a model that could deliver custom-designed force magnitude and direction to each tooth.
The mean force and displacement of 1 mm. for each flexible component were quantitated individually while all other flexible components were in a passive bracket position to see if the force magnitude to each tooth was constructed properly. Various hypothetical situation were quantitated. Unilateral mesial vectors caused skewing and labial displacement of …
Cephalometrics For The Oral Surgeon In The Diagnosis Of Facial Deformities, Frederick J. Mantz
Cephalometrics For The Oral Surgeon In The Diagnosis Of Facial Deformities, Frederick J. Mantz
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Surgical orthodontics presents a challenge to the oral surgeon. By the nature of the oral surgeon's training and discipline he should be the one best qualified to treat the surgical aspect of the surgical orthodontic case. The establishment of a proper diagnosis and means of communication between the oral surgeon and orthodontist are essential in achieving a good final result for the surgically treated case. Fortunately, a scientific method of diagnosis is available that can provide both specialties with a common language. Computerized cephalometric analysis can provide the diagnosis and link of communication for the discussion of goals and treatment. …
A Method Of Analyzing Mandibular Movement, Richard B. Mccoy
A Method Of Analyzing Mandibular Movement, Richard B. Mccoy
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Mandibular movement is considered to be a fundamental factor in the study, analysis, and treatment of occlusion. For many years, dentists have realized that dental health depends upon the compatibility of mandibular movements and occlusion. This realization has led to the development of new methods and techniques for recording accurately and scientifically the movements of the mandible. In order for this data to be of scientific value, it must be stored in a usable form which is easily available for analysis.
The purpose of this research project was to develop a procedure for storing and recalling mandibular-movement information. Before such …

Viability Of Dentin In Rats Incisors : Fluid Movement In Pulpless, Endodontically Treated, And Normal Teeth In Rats, Maria Luisa Canales
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
It is a well established fact that there is a fluid transport system through the dentin, however to the present time very little has been done regarding this system in teeth that have been endodontically treated.
The present work was conducted in vivo using the lower incisors of rats as the medium for the study.
A selected number of Sprague Dawley rats (36 animals), whose average age was 60 days, and whose body weight averaged about 180 grams, were given an anesthetic of Sodium Pentabarbitol, .05 to .07 ml. per 100 grams body weight. This anesthetic was injected intraperitoneally.

The Effect Of Post-Operative Use Of Chlorhexidine On Periodontal Regeneration In Monkeys With Chronic Bifurcation Defects, J. Pat Bishop
The Effect Of Post-Operative Use Of Chlorhexidine On Periodontal Regeneration In Monkeys With Chronic Bifurcation Defects, J. Pat Bishop
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Periodontal regeneration and inflammation was evaluated histometrically in 36 paired teeth in six macque(sic) monkeys with chronic bifurcation defects. Daily topical TL Chlorhexidine was applied to one-half of the teeth, saline to the other half for six weeks after the bifurcation defects were surgically debrided. Measurements were made from a section taken from the mid-bifurcation for each tooth. The results demonstrated no significant difference in the area of inflammatory response or the degree of regenerative capacity of post-operative healing between Chlorhexidine treated and paired nontreated control teeth.
