The Effect Of Individual Preoperative Interviews In Addition To Group Preoperative Teaching On Preoperative And Postoperative Stress, Barbara J. Wilde Jul 1974

The Effect Of Individual Preoperative Interviews In Addition To Group Preoperative Teaching On Preoperative And Postoperative Stress, Barbara J. Wilde

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate the effect of preoperative individual interviews in addition to the regular group and incidental preoperative teaching, on preoperative and postoperative stress. This effect was measured by the Multiple Affect Adjective Check List (MAACL), number of postoperative analgesics, and number of postoperative catheterizations for urinary retention.

It was hypothesized that patients receiving the individual interview would (1) have lower preoperative MAACL scores on anxiety, hostility. and depression, (2) have lower postoperative MAACL scores on anxiety, hostility, and depression, (3) show a smaller difference between the preoperative and postoperative MAACL scores, (4) require …

The Effect Of Various Doses Of Caffeine Upon The Maximal Muscular Endurance Of College Females, Roberta Jane Perkins Jul 1974

The Effect Of Various Doses Of Caffeine Upon The Maximal Muscular Endurance Of College Females, Roberta Jane Perkins

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

A limited number of investigations dealing with the effects of caffeine upon human physical performance have been conducted. Since caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant and it is a constituent of the popularly-consumed beverages - coffee, tea, and cola drinks, it would appear that numerous studies would have been conducted in order to determine the effect of caffeine upon human muscular performance. At any rate, there is a dearth of studies on this topic and the findings of the conducted experiments are equivocal and ambiguous.

The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of various doses …

Vermont Surgery Study, 1969-1971: On The Incidence Of Tonsillectomy And Other Common Types Of Surgery, John E. Wennberg Jul 1974

Vermont Surgery Study, 1969-1971: On The Incidence Of Tonsillectomy And Other Common Types Of Surgery, John E. Wennberg

Dartmouth Scholarship

The tonsils and adenoids have been subject to a widespread uncontrolled therapeutic experiment over the past half century so that at times and in certain segments of the society, less than half of the children have reached adulthood with these organs intact. While the operation has been recorded in ancient history, its popularity is associated with the advent of modern surgery and anesthesia. Tonsillectomy began to increase in frequency early in the century with a precipitous rise following World War I. Procedure rates continued at high levels since the 1930s and only in the past decade has there been evidence …

A Study Of The Topological Forms Of Mitochondrial Dna In Akr Mice, Deborah Carol Newman Jun 1974

A Study Of The Topological Forms Of Mitochondrial Dna In Akr Mice, Deborah Carol Newman

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) normally occurs in multicellular animals as a double-stranded covalently closed circular form with a contour length of approximately 5 µ. In addition to the normal monomer length circular molecules of 5 µ, circular forms of mtDNA with twice or several times the length of the monomeric form have been described in several systems. Dimers may be found in two forms: 1) unicircular dimers consisting of two monomeric length molecules linked in a head to tail structure, 2) catenated forms with two or more monomers interlocked as links in a chain. The latter are most commonly observed and …

Negotiation Within The Therapist-Client Interview, Rhoda Elaine Estep Jun 1974

Negotiation Within The Therapist-Client Interview, Rhoda Elaine Estep

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis combines a theoretical perspective and a methodological technique in order to clarify the concept of negotiation. The theoretical perspective represents a merging of a formal analysis as suggested by Georg Simmel and Erving Goffman and an interactional emphasis upon reciprocity of actions as proposed by Herbert Blumer. Accordingly, a methodological scheme was constructed to examine negotiations in terms of their forms and content.

Primary Pulmonary Hypertension - Disease Or Symptom? A Retrospective Reclassification Of 33 Cases, D. S. Dasgupta, Ellet H. Drake Jun 1974

Primary Pulmonary Hypertension - Disease Or Symptom? A Retrospective Reclassification Of 33 Cases, D. S. Dasgupta, Ellet H. Drake

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The hypertension which follows an intrinsic increase in pulmonary vascular resistance may be easily diagnosed by utilizing current catheterization and radiologic techniques. The real challenge is establishing a rational etiology in a given case before final pathological examination. Data from 33 proven cases are presented in an attempt to show that most ofthe proposed etiologic concepts may be represented in a large clinical series. Congenital and familial factors, multiple pulmonary embolization with resulting vasospastic sequela, arteritis, and degenerative states, were encountered, together with such specific clinical entities as scleroderma and systemic lupus erythematosus. Because the term "Primary Pulmonary Hypertension" implies …

Malignant Intrathoracic Hurthle-Cell Tumor: Report Of A Case With 12-Year Survival Following Three Palliative Operations, Conrad R. Lam Jun 1974

Malignant Intrathoracic Hurthle-Cell Tumor: Report Of A Case With 12-Year Survival Following Three Palliative Operations, Conrad R. Lam

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

A 55-year-old man had a large superior mediastinal tumor producing obstructive symptoms. The tumor was removed through an upper median sternotomy incision. It was found to be composed of so-called Hurthle-cells, which are of thyroid origin, and the pathologist's interpretation was that it was of low grade malignancy. A pulmonary metastatic nodule was excised five years later, and 8 1/2 years after the original operation, a nodule was removed from a pectoral muscle. The patient lived 12 years and then expired with multiple metastases, but he was relatively asymptomatic until the last few months.

Experimental Evaluation Of The New Galen Disposable Bubble Oxygenator, Ung-Gill Jeong, Julio C. Davila Jun 1974

Experimental Evaluation Of The New Galen Disposable Bubble Oxygenator, Ung-Gill Jeong, Julio C. Davila

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

To assess the performance of the new Galen bubble oxygenator, two groups of 10 female mongrel dogs underwent three hours of total cardiopulmonary bypass. Adequate oxygenation and tissue perfusion as well as low hemolysis were demonstrated in both groups. Platelets were lower than the control in both groups due partly to hemodilution. Calculation of calorie transfer rate during cooling and rewarming demonstrated that the Bentley heat exchanger was more efficient. However, since water flow rate through this unit is limited, the net performance of the Galen was slightly better.

Medical Conference: Gaucher's Disease, Ellis J. Van Slyck, Lester Weiss, Robert Waldmann Jun 1974

Medical Conference: Gaucher's Disease, Ellis J. Van Slyck, Lester Weiss, Robert Waldmann

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The middle-aged man whose case is discussed here harbored Type 7 Gaucher's disease in subtle form. This hereditary disorder was partly disguised by a long history of peptic ulcer. Still a third cause for anemia was eventually uncovered in a surprise conclusion. The major discussion deals with the clinical aspects, microscopic pathology, genetics, and biochemistry of Gaucher's disease and related sphingolipidoses.

How Psychotherapy Heals, Jerome D. Frank

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

This paper, accompanied by the discussions and the preceding introduction, was delivered May 9, 1974 as part of an anniversary celebration commemorating a half century of existence for the psychiatric unit at Henry Ford Hospital. Established in 1924 by the late Thomas J. Heldt, M.D., as a division of neuropsychiatry in the department of medicine, the unit is generally believed to be the first to be incorporated into a general hospital anywhere. It was - and is - conducted without physical restraints of any kind, without isolation of patients, and without segregation of men and women.

The Deoxythymidine Kinase-Deoxythymidylate Kinase Enzymes In Salmonella Potsdam And Escherichia Coli K12 Infected With Bacteriophage P3, James D. Kettering Jun 1974

The Deoxythymidine Kinase-Deoxythymidylate Kinase Enzymes In Salmonella Potsdam And Escherichia Coli K12 Infected With Bacteriophage P3, James D. Kettering

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Metabolic alterations in bacterial hosts caused by virus infections have been studied for the last thirty years. The virulent T-even bacteriophages have been studied the most and have been shown to be responsible for the induction of a number of new, virus-specific enzymes that are necessary for successful phage growth. In addition, the activity of other host enzymes present prior to infection has been found to be increased by T-even infection. Temperate bacteriophages, being more difficult to work with than the virulent viruses, have not been studied as extensively. This is especially true for metabolic studies, since most temperate phage …

Tongue-Thrust Etiology : A Review Of The Literature, Betty C. Vine Jun 1974

Tongue-Thrust Etiology : A Review Of The Literature, Betty C. Vine

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In recent years the attention of specialty groups has been drawn toward the peculiar oral behavior commonly referred to as tongue-thrust. This behavior is not only characterized by multiple symptomatology, but it also has been characterized by multiple terminology.

In addition to the wide variety of views and theories on the tongue-thrust behavior, there is an ever greater discrepancy of opinion concerning the causal factors of this behavior. What is its etiology? Is it a functional disorder? Is it organically based or a combination of the two?

The purpose of the study was to attempt to organize the most prevalent …

Verrucous Carcinoma Of The Oral Cavity, Lane C. Thomsen Jun 1974

Verrucous Carcinoma Of The Oral Cavity, Lane C. Thomsen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This paper describes 39 cases of oral verrucous carcinoma. This study reports on 20 cases from the San Diego Tumor Group and 19 cases from the Oral Pathology Service which showed the characteristic features of verrucous carcinoma. Twenty three patients were men and 16 were women. In the majority of the cases the lesion was exophytic and had a papillary surface. The buccal mucosa and gingiva were the sites most frequently involved. The characteristic histologic pattern consisted of keratinized well-differentiated epithelium exhibiting irregular folds. In addition there was an inward projection of bulbous rete ridges. Surgical excision was the treatment …

Bone Regeneration Over Submerged Dental Roots In Dogs, Roger Lee Plata Jun 1974

Bone Regeneration Over Submerged Dental Roots In Dogs, Roger Lee Plata

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Nonendodontically treated roots were submerged 1.5 to 2.0 mm. below the alveolar crest in three dogs. Twelve roots were treated in this manner. Regeneration of alveolar bone can be seen in three weeks with complete bone coverage in five weeks. A complete lamina dura can be seen around the amputated roots.

Bone failed to regenerate over two of the twelve roots. In one case there was delayed healing due to the early loss of some sutures. A sinus tract developed connecting the oral environment with the contents of the pulp. This led to bone resorption and a necrotic pulp. In …
