A Study Of Student Clinicians' Behaviors In Response To Feedback From The Analysis Of Behaviors Of The Clinician (Abc) System, Susan Kay Clare
Dissertations and Theses
The major goal of supervisors in the area of Speech Pathology is to help student clinicians improve efficiency and effectiveness in attaining a therapeutic goal. This study was designed to provide systemic feedback of recorded data to student clinicians to determine the effect of a particular supervisory instrument on the future performance of inexperienced clinicians. The subjects for this study were six beginning student clinicians in Speech Pathology at Portland State University, two of which were randomly selected to represent the control group.
All of the clinicians were observed for a randomly selected consecutive five-minute period from each of six …

Sex Roles, A History. From Insects to humans, gender is associated with specific behavior. Below the mammals there are sex differences in dominance that are correlated with androgen function on the inside, and with certain types of stimulation on the outside. In higher forms, the increasing complexity of brain development means increasing capacity for modification through experience and learned modes of adaptation to the environment.
By the time the primate level is reached, social influences have become so intricate and compelling as to clearly foreshadow culture.
According to Elizabeth Janeway in her article Reflections on the History of Women, in …
Recovery From Stuttering In A Sample Of Elementary School Children, Carol Deno Kimball
Recovery From Stuttering In A Sample Of Elementary School Children, Carol Deno Kimball
Dissertations and Theses
Several studies have been undertaken to determine the incidence of recovery from stuttering; however, the results of these investigations are not reliable due to methodological limitations. For the most part, ex-post-facto recall judgements on the parts of adults or parents of young children were relied upon in gathering data for the research. It would appear that a requisite factor in determining incidence of recovery from stuttering should be the use of a formal instrument which would quantify the auditory and visual aspects of speaking behavior to determine the presence or absence of stuttering.
The primary purpose of this study was …

The Renal Response To Ringer's Infusion In Developing Rats, Brian Stephen Misanko
The Renal Response To Ringer's Infusion In Developing Rats, Brian Stephen Misanko
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
In order to study the effectiveness of body water and electrolyte regulation in young animals, the developmental pattern of renal function of rats in response to body fluid volume expansion with Ringer’s was investigated. Clearance experiments were performed on male Wistar rats of two age groups, twenty to thirty days and forty to sixty days of age. After two hours of a stabilization period, urine was collected for three consecutive twenty minute periods to establish a control value. The rats were then given an intravenous infusion of mammalian Ringer's solution of a volume equal to 4.6% o: body weight. Urine …

Sclerosing Cholangitis: Surgical Significance, C. Grodsinsky, M. A. Block, B. E. Brush
Sclerosing Cholangitis: Surgical Significance, C. Grodsinsky, M. A. Block, B. E. Brush
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The authors' experience with the rare entity of sclerosing cholangitis suggests that several anatomical patterns of involvement of the extrahepatic biliary tract may occur. The involvement may include the intraluminal ducts segmentally or diffusely, or the process may primarily be external to the ducts as pericholedochitis. It may or may not represent one component of a systemic disease, particulady autoimmune disease. Although involvement may be diffuse, progression may be slow and compatible with many years of life. Long time followup is essential before any value can be assigned to a given modality of treatment. Carcinoma of the ductal system may …

Pseudomonas Arthritis And Osteomyelitis In Heroin Addiction: Report Of Three Cases, Paul M. Ross, Robert C. Nestor, Kent K. Wu
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Pseudomonas-caused sternoclavicular arthritis and osteomyelitis has received little attention in the medical literature. The authors present three cases including one case of bilateral sternoclavicular joint involvement. Prompt recognition, operative debridement, and institution of adequate chemotherapy result in dramatic clinical response.

A case of a left atrial myxoma presented unusual features including (1) association with an atrial septal defect, (2) attachment of the myxoma to the posterior wall of the left atrium, (3) probable paradoxical pulmonary embolization from the left atrium, and (4) probable ball valve effect of the myxoma in the atrial septal defect.
Treatment Of The Hyperventilation Syndrome, Hans Von Brauchitsch
Treatment Of The Hyperventilation Syndrome, Hans Von Brauchitsch
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
A review oi the literature on the hyperventilation syndrome reveals a variety of treatment approaches and a virtual absence of controlled studies of this common problem. Attempts to treat the condition by changing the respiratory pattern through mechanical means can be traced back to the first century A.D. The "paper bag method" of treatment has many psychological drawbacks and is often unsuccessful. Several avenues of drug treatment have been explored: acidifiers, minor tranquilizers, antidepressants, and stimulants. Reports of success with insight-oriented intensive psychotherapy are scarce. Some forms of group psychotherapy have been tried with success. The model of the "medical …

Methadone And Its Rationale In The Treatment Of Narcotic Dependency, Walter J. Cassidy
Methadone And Its Rationale In The Treatment Of Narcotic Dependency, Walter J. Cassidy
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
An effective methadone maintenance program must do more than dispense measured doses in a well-organized clinic. It should attempt to effect changes in the patient's personality and coping mechanisms, social situation, and other conditioning factors which maintain his involvement in narcotics.

A Study Of Naturally Occurring Algicides Produced By Freshwater Algae, Denny O. Harris, Harry D. Caldwell
A Study Of Naturally Occurring Algicides Produced By Freshwater Algae, Denny O. Harris, Harry D. Caldwell
KWRRI Research Reports
The mode of action of the algicide produced by Pandorina morum was examined by exposing Volvox globator and isolates spinach chloroplasts to a partially purified algicide preparation. Oxygen evolution of Volvox, whole chloroplasts and broken chloroplasts (minus the Calvin cycle),was reduced indicating that the algicide inhibits the light reactions of photosynthesis. Oxygen evolution studies of other Volvocaceae confirmed the observation that Pandorina morum is not significantly influenced by its own inhibitor. Molecular weight approximation by gel filtration established that the inhibitor has a low molecular weight (probably below 100 mw). Field studies indicate that this algicide has tremendous potential as …
