Scintiphotography In Evaluation Of Renal Transplants, Halcott T. Haden Jan 1975

Scintiphotography In Evaluation Of Renal Transplants, Halcott T. Haden

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Renal transplantation has progressed from the research stage to become a standard clinical procedure. Although still generally limited to large medical centers, renal transplants are regularly done in over 135 hospitals in the United States. In 1972, approximately 2,600 renal transplants were recorded in the United States by the Renal Transplant Registry. Approximately 65% of these were cadaver donors and 35% living donors.

Radioimmunologic Methods For Diagnosis Of Malignant Diseases, Paul B. Hoffer Jan 1975

Radioimmunologic Methods For Diagnosis Of Malignant Diseases, Paul B. Hoffer

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The recent availability of the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) assay has stimulated great clinical interest in tumor antigens. Carcinoembryonic antigen is not the only specific or tumor-associated antigen currently identified. There are a number of other tumor antigens which have been isolated, some of which are related to CEA and some of which are totally different. There is, for example, a nonspecific cross-reacting antigen (NCA) which has been discovered in certain preparations which were considered originally to be CEA. Nonspecific cross-reacting antigen is a beta globulin (25% carbohydrate) which cross-reacts with antibodies to CEA and may be the nonspecific background element …

Modern Management Of Diabetic Pregnancies, Elsie R. Carrington Jan 1975

Modern Management Of Diabetic Pregnancies, Elsie R. Carrington

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

On a broad national basis, it should be quite possible to substantially reduce maternal morbidity and the disproportionately high numbers of perinatal losses associated with diabetic pregnancies. Nationwide, the overall perinatal mortality rate for this group is approximately 20%, which is at least double that incurred in centers where intensive care facilities and personnel are available, and consistent, well-coordinated care by the health team is provided. Although the prognosis for fetal survival is less favorable with advances in severity of the diabetic state, there is a significant risk even during the mildest stage of the disease. Careful prospective studies, notably …

The Birth Of A New Department At Mcv/Vcu-Human Genetics, Peter Mamunes

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In recognition of the central role of genetics in the health professions, the MCV/VCU School of Basic Sciences and Graduate Studies substantially enlarged its commitment to this discipline by creating a new Department of Human Genetics as of September 1, 1975, under the chairmanship of Walter E. Nance, M.D, Ph.D., an internationally renowned medical geneticist. Amenorrhea Due To Defects In Steroid Biosynthesis, H. Oliver Williamson, Rajesh S. Mathur Jan 1975

Amenorrhea Due To Defects In Steroid Biosynthesis, H. Oliver Williamson, Rajesh S. Mathur

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Amenorrhea as the first manifestation of a steroid biosynthetic defect is rather unusual. The common forms of congenital adrenal hyperplasia are classic examples of steroid biosynthetic defects. Yet in genotypic females, this disorder is usually evident from birth because of virilization. Effective treatment usually ensues and amenorrhea is only a problem when control is inadequate. However, there are individuals whose disorder will be manifest for the first time in the postnatal or adult period. In addition, multiple other steroid defects have now been clearly delineated. Many of these individuals will have amenorrhea, virilization, or sexual ambiguities as part of the …

Radical Hysterectomy For Carcinoma Of The Cervix, John J. Mikuta Jan 1975

Radical Hysterectomy For Carcinoma Of The Cervix, John J. Mikuta

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Radical hysterectomy refers to the removal of the uterus and cervix and, in addition, to the removal of the upper one-half to one-third of the vagina, the parametria and the pelvic lymph nodes. This operation, which is commonly called the Wertheim operation, was actually first described by Clark in the United States and Ries in Germany. Wertheim's original operation for carcinoma of the cervix consisted only of a partial parametrial removal and removal of the upper one-third of the vagina. It did not include pelvic lymphadenectomy or the removal of the lateral portions of the parametria.

Some Practical Thoughts On Medical Malpractice, Robert L. Harris Jan 1975

Some Practical Thoughts On Medical Malpractice, Robert L. Harris

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Today more malpractice suits are being filed than ever before. Not only are more suits being filed but the amount of settlements and verdicts has significantly increased. Perhaps one of the primary reasons for this phenomenon is the consumerists movements. Obviously, the more consumer groups advocate consumer protection, and the more that juries render favorable verdicts, the better educated and aware of verdicts the consumer becomes. The result of this is that people become more litigation conscious. In Virginia, medical malpractice litigation appears to be just beginning to flourish in relation to other large urban areas in the North and …

Calcium And Phosphorus Requirements In Lupin Seed Rations For Pigs, N W. Godfrey, A. R. Mercy Jan 1975

Calcium And Phosphorus Requirements In Lupin Seed Rations For Pigs, N W. Godfrey, A. R. Mercy

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Seed of lupin varieties now available can be combined with wheat or barley to produce a balanced diet for growing/finishing pigs, and lupin seed has become a popular ingredient of pig rations.

As a protein concentrate, lupin seed is a satisfactory alternative to meatmeal, provided adequate amounts of calcium and phosphorus are added as supplements. Without the addition of these elements to rations of lupin seed and grain, a number of problems are likely to arise.

Trials at the Medina Pig Research Station have shown that Christmas Island rock phosphate is the cheapest and most convenient source of supplementary calcium …
