Synovial fluid from a case of pyarthrosis was cultured for fungi, mycobacteria, aerobes and anaerobes with negative results. A Cell Wall Deficient (CWD) form was isolated in numerous cultures which showed the physico-chemical reactions characteristic of wall deficient M. tuberculosis.

Fiberoptic Colonoscopic Polypectomies, Thomas A. Fox Jr., Bernard Schuman, Hubert M. Allen, E. Escobar Mar 1975

Fiberoptic Colonoscopic Polypectomies, Thomas A. Fox Jr., Bernard Schuman, Hubert M. Allen, E. Escobar

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The development of fiberoptic instruments which permit direct visualization of the entire colonic lumen has made possible the safe removal of polyps from any part of the colon. The avoidance of transabdominal colotomy and polypectomy significantly decreases the mortality and morbidity as well as the duration of hospital stay. We wish to present our experience in performing the endoscopic removal of 128 colonic polyps larger than 0.5 cm in size in 103 patients, located from the cecum to the sigmoid colon and beyond the reach of the rigid sigmoidoscope. The polypectomy procedures via the colonoscope were done without mortality and …

Penicillin-Resistant Viridans Streptococcus Endocarditis Related To The Administration Of Penicillin G Or Carbenicillin And Alterations In Mouth Flora, Keith Burch, Edward L. Quinn, Donald Romig, Frank Cox, Evelyn Fisher, T. Madhavan Mar 1975

Penicillin-Resistant Viridans Streptococcus Endocarditis Related To The Administration Of Penicillin G Or Carbenicillin And Alterations In Mouth Flora, Keith Burch, Edward L. Quinn, Donald Romig, Frank Cox, Evelyn Fisher, T. Madhavan

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Of 135 patients with streptococcal (non-group D) endocarditis seen at the Henry Ford Hospital (1957-1973), 133 had isolates which were penicillin- sensitive (inhibited by ≤ 0.2 μg/ml of penicillin C). The remaining two causative organisms were inhibited by 0.8 μg/ml of penicillin G and both of the infected patients received antibiotics just prior to the onset of endocarditis. The first patient received oral penicillin C for rheumatic fever prophylaxis and the second high dose parenteral carbenicillin. Using high dose parenteral therapy with ampicillin and streptomycin, the first patient was cured while the other patient relapsed. The second patient responded to …

Kidney Cortex Lysosomal Acid Proteinase Activity During Induction Of A Protein-Losing Nephropathy With The Aminonucleoside Of Puromycin, Paul D. Bartlett, Laura Katona Mar 1975

Kidney Cortex Lysosomal Acid Proteinase Activity During Induction Of A Protein-Losing Nephropathy With The Aminonucleoside Of Puromycin, Paul D. Bartlett, Laura Katona

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Effects have been studied of induction of aminonucleoside-nephrosis in the rat on kidney cortex lysosomal acid proteinase activity (pH 3.2) and on such activity in the cytosol from which the lysosomes were isolated. In parallel with the onset of the massive proteinuria of the disease process but not preceding this effect, activity in the cytosol fraction was significantly increased. Significantly increased activity in the lysosomal fraction, on the other hand, was not observed until the proteinuria was well-established. Comparative study of the release of acid proteinase activity, from intact lysosomes isolated from normal and from aminonucleoslde-nephrotic rat kidneys, suggest-in the …

In Vivo Quantitation Of Adipose Tissue By Differential Absorptiometry Using Penetrating Isotopic Radiation, Luther E. Preuss, Frank B. Bolin, Claudius K. Bugenis Mar 1975

In Vivo Quantitation Of Adipose Tissue By Differential Absorptiometry Using Penetrating Isotopic Radiation, Luther E. Preuss, Frank B. Bolin, Claudius K. Bugenis

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The physical principles for determining tissue lipid content In vivo by selective radiation attenuation have been studied and are compared to other methods of body composition analysis. Two penetrating photon beams, each monoenergetic but of differing energies, are simultaneously passed through the low Z components of tissue and the relative beam absorption measured. A mathematical function incorporating the unabsorbed and absorbed photon beam intensities is applied to determine experimentally the relative proportion of fat and lean in the tissue. '"Cd is used as the radioactive source of both xrays and gamma radiation. Results of experiments on low 2 phantom material …

Daily Temperature Rhythm In Hospitalized Female Patients, Phyllis L. Mcelmurry Mar 1975

Daily Temperature Rhythm In Hospitalized Female Patients, Phyllis L. Mcelmurry

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The study was designed to determine the hour when temperature peaks occur in adult hospitalized females, and to find if factors such as age and natural or surgical menopause with replacement therapy affect the thermal circadian cycle. Previous studies indicated that the temperature peak occurs in afternoon or early evening, but there were no investigations to determine if aging, sex, or menopause affects the temperature cycle.

The sample included 62 female patients, 29 between 21 and 62 years of age, and 33 between 65 and 90 years. Each subject admitted to the study was screened against fifteen qualifying criteria. Some …

A Post-Retention Study Of The Stability Of Lower Incisors Evaluated Cephalometrically, Robert W. Allen Mar 1975

A Post-Retention Study Of The Stability Of Lower Incisors Evaluated Cephalometrically, Robert W. Allen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this research was to determine if forward movement of the lower incisor in a horizontal plane during active treatment affected the post-retention stability. The post-active treatment position of the lower incisor in relation to APo plane, NB plane and mandibular plane was also studied to determine if it affected the post-retention stability.

To determine where the lower incisors were moved during treatment, the beginning cephalometric tracings were superimposed over the end of active treatment tracings on the Corpus Axis at Supra-Pogonion. The amount of change in the incisal edge was measured to the nearest millimeter on a …

The Relationship Of Locus Of Control Of The Diabetic Patient And Compliance With Medical Regimen, Lois Daniel Mar 1975

The Relationship Of Locus Of Control Of The Diabetic Patient And Compliance With Medical Regimen, Lois Daniel

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The literature indicates that many diabetic patients do not adhere to their prescribed medical regimen and that there is a need to discover factors that stimulate compliant behavior. It has been proposed that the patient's decision to accept or reject treatment has many determinants. This study explored the effect of one such determinant, the locus of control (the source of the stimulus for a person's behavior). It was hypothesized that a person with an internal locus (one who believes his actions influence his future) would be more likely to comply with a medical regimen than one with an external locus …

A Comparison Of Responses Between Two Different Socioeconomic Groups On The Boehm Test Of Basic Concepts, Teri Jones Geist Feb 1975

A Comparison Of Responses Between Two Different Socioeconomic Groups On The Boehm Test Of Basic Concepts, Teri Jones Geist

Dissertations and Theses

The primary purpose of the investigation was to compare the responses of white, lower-class kindergartners and first graders with white, middle-class kindergartners and first graders on the Boehm Test of Basic Concepts (BTBC) in order to determine if a statistically significant difference existed between socioeconomic level and the number of concepts correctly identified on the BTBC. A secondary purpose was to determine is a significant relationship existed between concept development as measure by the BTBC and intelligence from an assessment of receptive vocabulary by using the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT).

One hundred white, lower …
