Therapists Or Helpers? Notes On A Youth-Type Free Clinic, Michael W. Agopian, Robert W. Dellinger, Gilbert Geis
Therapists Or Helpers? Notes On A Youth-Type Free Clinic, Michael W. Agopian, Robert W. Dellinger, Gilbert Geis
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This paper builds upon a helpful typology of free clinics that divides then into four major kinds - the street, neighborhood, youth, and sponsored. While the typology tends to weave among characteristics of clientele, locale, and source of support in setting up its units, it nonetheless has the advantage of being based on an empirical assessment of the major forms of clinic operations through the country. Youth clinics - the type that particularly concerns us here - are defined as "generally organized by adults, service clubs, or official boards... because of their concern about drug use among high school students." …

Client Costs And Early Discontinuance From A Community-Based Treatment Program, Ronald A. Feldman, Mortimer Goodman, John S. Wodarski, Wallace J. Gingerich
Client Costs And Early Discontinuance From A Community-Based Treatment Program, Ronald A. Feldman, Mortimer Goodman, John S. Wodarski, Wallace J. Gingerich
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
In social work circles client withdrawal from a treatment program commonly has been labeled as "discontinuance". Discontinuance rates have been inordinately high for both casework and group work endeavors, ranging in some instances to 59Z of all clients following the first interview (Aronson and Overall, 1966; Empey and Erickson, 1972; Goldstein, Heller, and Sechrest, 1966; Levinger, 1960; Overall and Aronson, 1963). Discontinuance represents an obvious and essential concern for social work for one overarching reason, to wit, treatment interventions cannot be implemented should the client(s) withdraw from the therapeutic relationship. Additionally, as some investigators have shown, discontinuance represents a focal …

Amikacin was evaluated in vitro against S aureus and a variety of gram negative bacilli. In concentrations of 12.5 μg/ml or less, it suppressed the growth of all organisms except 15% of Proteus mirabilis. Peak serum levels in patients, following a 7.5 mg/kg IM dose, averaged 21 μg/ml at one hour. Most of the drug appeared in the urine during the first six hours after administration. Of six patients receiving an adequate course of treatment, all but one were cured. Treatment in that patient also failed with a subsequent course of gentamicin and carbenicillin and he was cured only by …

The Bacteriology Of The Biliary Tract: A Preliminary Report., J. A. Sapala, J. L. Ponka, T. R. Neblett
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The bacterial flora of acute biliary tract disease has not been completely elucidated. The organisms identified most often were coliforms. Anaerobic culture technics were not precise enough to provide proper identification. In a 12-month study of 250 patients operated upon for inflammatory gallbladder disease, culture specimens were collected in a most strict and rigorous fashion. It was hoped that a more exact understanding of the relationship between bacteria and inflammatory biliary tract disease might be appreciated. Important technics were developed for gathering specimens, delivery to the laboratory and culturing. More meaningful results are to be expected In the future.

Depth Doses In The Region Of Overlap Of The Supraclavicular And Internal Mammary Portals In Postoperative Radiation Therapy Of Carcinoma Of The Breast, Joel E. White, Michael Reidy, Murray Boles
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Computer-generated depth-dose data was obtained for the region of overlap of the internal mammary and supraclavicular portals utilized in post-operative radiation therapy for carcinoma of the breast. A phantom arrangement was created and measurements were obtained and compared with computer-generated depth doses for this arrangement. The actual measured and computer-generated values agreed to within 3%. On the patients measured at the center of the overlap region, the dose was found to vary from 3323 rets to 2571 rets over a depth range of 2-6 cm. It is occasionally the practice to ignore small areas of overlap. The dose at the …

Two patients are presented with EKC findings suggesting pseudo AV block Mobitz type II. Pseudo AV block was related to the presence of premature junctional or ventricular beats with concealed conduction. Response to therapy confirmed the initial diagnosis of pseudo AV block. Awareness of clinical conditions simulating type II second degree AV block is important because of the therapeutic implications and prognosis.
Utilization Of Mental Health Services For Children Relative To Social Class. A Pilot Study, H. K. Von Brauchitsch
Utilization Of Mental Health Services For Children Relative To Social Class. A Pilot Study, H. K. Von Brauchitsch
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Two groups of children were selected from those evaluated and treated over a two-year period. The study attempted to contrast the mental health care needs and the health care delivery system of children from the uppermost classes against those of the lowest classes. Very few diagnostic discriminators were found. Prevalence of intellectual dysfunctions In the lower classes and neuroses in the upper classes did not correlate with behavior pattern of "acting out" or "acting in." Autistic psychoses were found almost exclusively among the upper classes; suicidality almost exclusively In the lower classes. Upper class children were more frequently referred by …
A Rapid Flexible Method For Determining Bile Lipids, William T. Beher, Grace J. Lin, Sofia Stradnieks
A Rapid Flexible Method For Determining Bile Lipids, William T. Beher, Grace J. Lin, Sofia Stradnieks
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
A rapid flexible method has been developed for the quantitative determination of bile lipids In gallbladder and hepatic bile and duodenal aspirates. Quantification of bile salts involves separation of bile salt conjugates from one another and other bile lipids by thin layer chromatography. The separated salts are determined using 3-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and gas liquid chromatography. Cholesterol is determined in petroleum ether extracts of saponified bile by application of the Lieberman-Burchard reaction. Phospholipid phosphorus is determined in purified bile lipid extracts by oxidation followed by application of Bartlett's modification of the Fiske- SubbaRow method.

A Clinical Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Two Intracanal Medicaments, Xp-7/Prednisolone And 1% Pcp/Prednisolone, In Reduction And Duration Of Post-Treatment Pain, Kenneth G. Whitnack
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study was undertaken to determine which intracanal medication, 1% aqueous parachlorophenol with prednisolone or XP-7 with prednisolone was the most effective in reducing the severity and duration of post-treatment pain following initial, conventional endodontic therapy. The investigation was conducted by five endodontists in their private offices and utilized a double-blind technique.
The postoperative reactions of 343 patients were examined statistically. It was shown that there was no statistically significant difference in the reduction or duration of post-treatment pain with either drug. Other factors such as sex, age, location of tooth and presence of a radiographic lesion were statistically significant …
A Computerized Study Of The Behavior Of The Facial Axis During Treatment And Post-Retention, Gary Cornforth
A Computerized Study Of The Behavior Of The Facial Axis During Treatment And Post-Retention, Gary Cornforth
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A computerized cephalometric study of mandibular rotation was made of one hundred and eight patients that were treated by Drs. Ricketts and Bench of Pacific Palisades, California. These treated cases are on file at Rocky Mountain Data Systems in Sherman Oaks, California. The Ricketts computerized cephalometric analysis was utilized with each case.
Chin behavior during treatment and post-retention has always been of considerable interest to the clinical orthodontist and it was therefore decided to divide the patients into four groups according to the behavior of the chin during treatment and post-retention. Group 1 consisted of those patients that experienced a …

Sexual Parameters In Doctor-Patient Relationship, Judith Adams Perry
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A survey to determine the attitudes and practices of physicians regarding touching (erotically and nonerotically) their patients was conducted with 164 female physicians. The results were compared with a previous study (from the University of California, Los Angeles) of male physicians. As compared with the UCLA sample of male physicians, more female physicians believe in and engage in nonerotic touching; but fewer female physicians believe in and engage in erotic touching. None of the female physicians reported sexual intercourse with their patients as compared with 33 or 11% of the UCLA sample of male physicians.
The Effect Of Masking On The Acoustic Reflex Threshold, Nancy E. Aldrich
The Effect Of Masking On The Acoustic Reflex Threshold, Nancy E. Aldrich
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study investigated the effect of masking noise on the threshold for stapedial reflex. It has been shown that masking which shifts the hearing threshold causes a loudness function typical of recruitment. It was hypothesized that the stapedial reflex threshold remains the same in a masked situation as in the unmasked situation . It was suggested that this demonstrates recruitment in that the presence of noise reduces the range between hearing thresholds and stapedial reflex thresholds.
Ten subjects, with no known hearing loss or pathology involving the ear or reflex arc were used in this study. A 1000 Hz tone …
The Effect Of Insulin, Fluoride And Methyl Xanthines On The Hypothalamic-Parotid Gland Endocrine Axis, Reagan Ondler
The Effect Of Insulin, Fluoride And Methyl Xanthines On The Hypothalamic-Parotid Gland Endocrine Axis, Reagan Ondler
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of insulin and fluoride on dentinal fluid movement (FM) in high-sucrose fed rats as mediated through the hypothalamic-parotid gland endocrine axis. In conjunction with the fluoride study, the possible involvement of cAMP was examined through the use of several methyl xanthines which are recognized as phosphodiesterase inhibitors.
Twenty-one day old, male Sprague Dawley rats were maintained on a high-sugar diet (62% sucrose) for 8-9 days at which time intravenous or arterial infusions of insulin, fluoride or the methyl xanthines were performed. Additional procedures included collecting plasma from rats which had …

Developing A Periodontal Screening Examination, Jeffrey R. Morgulis
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Periodontal disease is the primary cause of tooth loss in the adult, and therefore, early diagnosis of periodontal disease by the general practitioner is important in terms of prevention as well as treatment. The present study was designed to develop a periodontal screening examination which would fulfill the following requirements:
- It should utilize precise and easily understood criteria.
- It should take a short period of time.
- It should enable the practitioner to accurately place patients into various disease categories.
- It should enable the practitioner to easily and quickly relate these disease categories to treatment.
A "comprehensive" periodontal examination was performed …

A Descriptive Study Of Women's Attitudes Towards Obtaining Or Not Obtaining Papanicolaou Smears, Linda J. Shults
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
It was the purpose of this study to identify the attitudes of a selected group of women which influenced their participation in Papanicolaou testing. These attitudes were inferred from the reasons women gave for obtaining the test. The subjects were randomly selected from the telephone book of a medium-sized town in Southern California. The 135 women who participated in the telephone interview were considered to be the respondents in the study.
A review of the literature revealed that through the annual use of the Papanicolaou smear, approximately 11,000 deaths every year from uterine and cervical cancer could be prevented, Attitudes …
