The Primary Immune Deficiency Treatment Consortium performed a retrospective analysis of 133 patients with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) receiving matched sibling donor (MSD) hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) between 1980 and 2023 at 30 North American institutions. In this largest cohort of MSD outcomes in patients with SCID to date, we examined the impact of conditioning regimen and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis on survival and immune recovery. Outcomes after MSD HCT for SCID were excellent. Patients without an active infection or failure to thrive (FTT) at the time of HCT had 5-year overall survival superior to those with infection or FTT. …

Immune-Mediated Necrotizing Myopathy In Association With Statin Exposure, Charlie E. Babcock, Phebie Rossi, Jennifer Hasvold
Immune-Mediated Necrotizing Myopathy In Association With Statin Exposure, Charlie E. Babcock, Phebie Rossi, Jennifer Hasvold
Aesculapius Journal (Health Sciences & Medicine)
Statins are first-line therapy for hyperlipidemia and are widely prescribed in primary care. Although generally safe, they carry rare but serious risks that must be considered on an individual basis. One such complication is immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM), an autoimmune condition characterized by persistent muscle weakness and elevated creatine kinase (CK) despite discontinuation of the statin. We describe an 87-year-old man with a history of atorvastatin intolerance who was reinitiated on the medication five years later. Shortly thereafter, he developed progressive weakness, recurrent hospitalizations, and ultimately was diagnosed with IMNM confirmed by biopsy and HMG-CoA reductase antibodies. Despite treatment with …

Utility Of The Wasi–Ii 2-Subtest Full Scale Iq For Identifying Impaired Cognitive Functions, Joseph J. Ryan, David S. Kreiner, Samuel T. Gontkovsky
Archives of Assessment Psychology
This study focused on how accurately the WASI–II 2FSIQ predicts the 4FSIQ. If two subtests can identify intellectual disability, a low score might prompt a switch to the WAIS–IV or WISC–V prior to completing the four WASI–II subtests. Participants were 94 individuals with psychiatric or neurological disorders (age M = 49.04 yrs, education M = 13.48 yrs) seem for clinical evaluation. The correlation between the 2FSIQs and 4FSIQs in the total sample was high, r(92) = .96, p < .001, but the former cannot be relied upon to predict 4FSIQs. It overestimated 4FSIQs in 69.1% of the cases, with only 50% of the 2FSIQs falling within + 3 points of the 4FSIQs. However, classification accuracy statistics indicated that the 2FSIQ effectively screened for the presence of intellectual disability. A 2FSIQ standard score cutoff of ≤ 79 yielded a high probability that the 4FSIQ was also at or below the cut score.

Historically, Black Americans have consistently performed more poorly than White Americans on various neuropsychological tests, with debates surrounding the causes of these differences ranging from genetic to societal factors. These differences have been documented across various cognitive domains, including memory, attention, executive function, and processing speed. Findings from previous research suggest that individuals with higher levels of education and stable marital relationships tend to exhibit better cognitive functioning, while certain football positions are linked to differences in cognitive abilities. However, the specific effects of these factors on neuropsychological performance require further investigation. The present archival study was derived from a …

HDAC inhibition shows promise in cancer treatment but pan-HDAC inhibitors cause gastrointestinal issues in 48% of patients. Understanding HDAC activation mechanisms is crucial to treating diverse diseases beyond cancer. Our study reveals that inositol polyphosphate multikinase (IPMK) and inositol hexakisphosphate (InsP6 or phytic acid), enriched in vegan diets, play essential roles in activating the HDAC3 epigenetic axis and maintaining intestinal barrier integrity. IPMK binds to HDAC3 and drives InsP6 synthesis, which selectively activates HDAC3 at a 10 nM concentration by recruiting the DAD domain of its corepressor protein. IPMK deletion diminishes HDAC3 activation, leading to histone hyperacetylation and MMP gene …

Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha Inhibition Improves Fetal Growth In A Rat Model Of Preeclampsia, Laura E. Coats, Nathan Campbell, Dylan Solise, Gabrielle M. Chamoun, Adam Z. Rawls, Alexandra Demesa, Ty Turner, Baoying Zheng, Barbara T. Alexander, Babbette Lamarca
Physiology & Biophysics
Introduction
Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) is elevated 2-fold in women with preeclampsia. Preclinical investigation shows TNF-α blockade reduces maternal blood pressure in reduced uterine perfusion pressure (RUPP) rats and attenuates the reduction in fetal weight. However, the benefits versus harms of this therapy on fetal growth and underlying pathogenesis are unknown. Thus, this study tested the hypothesis that maternal treatment with the soluble TNF-α inhibitor Etanercept (Etan) during late gestation improves placental perfusion, nutrient transport, and morphology, thereby improving fetal growth in the RUPP model of preeclampsia compared with Sham controls. We further …Oral Health Related Quality Of Life In A Group Of Egyptian Preschool Children With Early Childhood Caries: A Cross-Sectional Study, Sara Adel Botros, Sara Magdy, Asmaa Abou Bakr, Ola Abdel Geleel

The Racial Politics Of Early Dentistry And The Terrible “Toothache Blues”, Bronwen Mcveigh Phd
The Racial Politics Of Early Dentistry And The Terrible “Toothache Blues”, Bronwen Mcveigh Phd
Journal of the American College of Dentists
In interwar America, the relatively young profession of dentistry was developing rapidly. As the government, health institutions, and social organizers focused more intently on notions of national wellness, questions about how to achieve a healthy smile—and what a healthy smile should look like—proliferated. Groups like the National Dental Association worked to establish rigorous standards of technique, define ethical behavior, and encourage dentists to develop business acumen, yet the surprising proliferation of blues songs about dubious dentists tricking unassuming clients, or about fraught love affairs allegorized by disastrous dental exams, highlights the equivocal nature of many developments in early dentistry.

The Dental Phantom As A Tool For Exploring Fear, The Face, And Dental Education, Christine Slobogin Phd
The Dental Phantom As A Tool For Exploring Fear, The Face, And Dental Education, Christine Slobogin Phd
Journal of the American College of Dentists
Dental phantoms have been used in dental education since the late nineteenth century. These pedagogical objects – particularly those from the first half of the twentieth century – have today enjoyed a resurgence of interest in the art and film worlds. After first outlining the history and pedagogical purposes of the dental phantom, this article examines what the artistic and filmic attractions to the aesthetics of these objects can tell us about fear, the mouth and the face, and dental education. How and why can a dental teaching tool be scary? Arriving at some answers to this question – reached …

The Vipeholm Experiments: A Case Study Of Unethical Dental Research, Lainie Ross Md, Phd
Journal of the American College of Dentists
Modern-day research ethics training often begins with a discussion of the medical research atrocities committed by Nazi health care professionals and the resulting 10-principle Nuremberg Code, which is often considered to be the beginning of modern-day medical research regulations. It is occasionally mentioned that Nazi dentists also conducted unethical research in the concentration camps, and a few were brought to trial. In this manuscript, I compare two studies (one medical and one dental) conducted after World War II that violated the Nuremberg Code.
I describe and compare the well-known Willowbrook Hepatitis studies conducted by infectious disease doctors on vulnerable institutionalized …
Information Distortion As A Source Of Overconfidence In Managerial Decisions, Peter Boyle, Pete Nye
Information Distortion As A Source Of Overconfidence In Managerial Decisions, Peter Boyle, Pete Nye
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Managers confronting important strategic decisions often receive diagnostic information sequentially over time. As new information becomes available, they may need to update their understanding of the situation and possibly revise their preferences. During a decision, as a preference develops for one alternative course of action, a nonconscious goal of maintaining consistency between that preference, however tentative, and the new information can lead to an interpretation of that information so as to support the current preference. This tendency to bias or distort information to support the currently preferred option can in turn lead to even greater confidence in that leading option, …
The Mouth As A Mirror: A Parent- Hygienist’S Ethical Reflections On Oral Healthcare And Pompe Disease, Anika Atkins Ma, Rdh
The Mouth As A Mirror: A Parent- Hygienist’S Ethical Reflections On Oral Healthcare And Pompe Disease, Anika Atkins Ma, Rdh
Journal of the American College of Dentists
This reflective narrative explores the ethical tensions and emotional realities of a dental hygienist who is also the parent of a child with Pompe disease. Drawing from personal experience and care ethics philosophy, the author examines how traditional clinical frameworks—centered on autonomy, beneficence, and protocol— often fall short when addressing the needs of medically fragile children. The piece weaves in the work of care ethicists and pastoral ministry to embrace the philosophy of caregiving as presence, to suggest that oral healthcare must evolve to include responsiveness, context, and relationship-based decision-making. Through the dual lens of provider and parent, the narrative …

Restoring Trust: A Fair Chance At A Bright Smile And The Human Side Of School-Based Dentistry, Rubin Sorrell Ii, Mph, Dds
Journal of the American College of Dentists
The Fair Chance at a Bright Smile (FCAABS) program represents a humanistic, community- centered approach to dentistry that redefines access, education, and dignity in oral health. Developed and refined through a year-long pilot partnership with the San Francisco Unified School District, FCAABS integrates preventive dental care, oral health education, and career exposure for students from pre-kindergarten through high school. This manuscript argues that beyond clinical outcomes, FCAABS reveals a deeper truth: oral health is intrinsically social, emotional, and moral. It examines the program through the lens of the humanities and ethics, exploring how narrative, empathy, and cultural context inform both …

Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose As A Mucoadhesive Polymer In Ethanol-Free Buprenorphine Gel For Neonatal Sublingual Delivery, Sanskruti Dave, Viren Soni, Samarth A. Shah, Walter K. Kraft, Gagan Kaushal
College of Pharmacy Faculty Papers
Buprenorphine (BUP) is widely used in the treatment of neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS). However, the most compounded formulation contains 30% ethanol, despite regulatory and clinical concerns regarding ethanol exposure in pediatric patients. Thus, this research aimed to develop an ethanol-free sublingual (SL) gel formulation of BUP that would be safe, stable, and suitable for NOWS. Multiple polymers were screened as gelling agents, with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) emerging as the ideal base polymer for the formulation due to its optimal pH, rheological characteristics, and stability. The formulated gels were stored at room temperature and refrigerated conditions for 30 days and …

This Doctor of Nursing Practice project was an executive leadership proposal to develop an evidence-based program plan for standardized postpartum mental health screening and structured referral processes within an obstetric clinic. The practice problem was inconsistent postpartum mental health screening and follow up. Internal organizational data demonstrated elevated no-show and cancellation rates among obstetric patients referred for mental health services, reflecting gaps in care coordination, particularly for rural and underserved populations. The purpose of this project was to develop a comprehensive program plan guided by the following practice-focused question: Will a standardized postpartum mental health screening and structured referral program …
Staff Education Of Fall Prevention Intervention In The Emergency Department, Jonathan Jaramillo
Staff Education Of Fall Prevention Intervention In The Emergency Department, Jonathan Jaramillo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Patient falls remain a significant patient safety concern in emergency departments (EDs) despite the routine use of fall risk screening tools. At the project site, continued fall events suggested a gap in staff knowledge, confidence, and consistent application of evidence-based fall prevention strategies. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) quality improvement project evaluated whether a targeted staff education intervention would improve ED nursing staff's knowledge, confidence, and intent to identify fall risk, implement prevention strategies, and respond appropriately to patient falls. Guided by the Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate (ADDIE) instructional design model, an evidence-based educational intervention was developed …

Development Of An Evidence-Based Educational Intervention Designed To Increase Staff Knowledge And Competence In Comprehensive Fall-Prevention Practices, Jacqueline U. Becerra
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Inpatient falls continue to represent a significant nurse-sensitive quality indicator associated with patient injury, extended hospital stays, and increased healthcare costs. Despite the presence of established fall-prevention protocols, inconsistent completion of fall-risk assessments and uneven application of prevention strategies contributed to ongoing fall events at the project site. The practice problem addressed in this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was the lack of consistent staff knowledge and application of evidence-based fall-prevention practices. The purpose of this evidence-based quality improvement project was to implement and evaluate a structured fall-prevention staff education program to increase inpatient staff knowledge related to fall-prevention …
