The Effect Of Ammonia On The Germination And Outgrowth Of Bacillius Globigii, Joseph B. Kunicki

This research investigated the germination and outgrowth of Bacillus globigii in the presence of ammonia in laboratory scale experiments. Germination was measured by monitoring the release of dipicolinic acid, an organic compound present in bacterial spores, while outgrowth was measured using phase-bright microscopy and semi-automated counting procedures. The ammonia-N concentrations investigated generally did not cause statistically significant differences in the initial 1-hr germination rates or the average 3-hr outgrowth rates of Bacillus globigii spores in batch style experiments. The radioactive fallout from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactors accident and the ongoing threat of nuclear or radioactive terrorism have forced the need for urban radiological decontamination into the forefront. Many of the established decontamination techniques are not ideally suited for the urban milieu. One of the keys to maximize the effectiveness of long-term remediation and recovery in the urban environment is immediate mitigation within a few days of the incident and before a rain event. Exposure to extreme environments is both mentally and physically taxing, leading to suboptimal performance and even life-threatening emergencies. Physiological and cognitive monitoring could provide the earliest indicator of performance decline and inform appropriate therapeutic intervention, yet little research has explored the relationship between these markers in strenuous settings. The use of biological agents as weapons has been prevalent throughout history. Only when the US experienced a bioterrorist attack in 2001 did additional funding begin to invest in preparing for other potential attacks. These initial investments, along with others, have funded preventative measures such as mass surveillance through biosensor technology and the development of preparedness programs such as the Laboratory Response Network and Hospital Preparedness Program. This deficiency has been felt acutely in the two, short, following years with two Ebola virus outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and a Marburg virus outbreak in Uganda. In both the United States and Europe, explanations of homegrown radicalization emphasize the power of Salafi-jihadist ideology and Muslim experiences of discrimination and socioeconomic deprivation in Western countries. Polls of U.S. and European Muslims, and case histories of jihadist plots for attacks in the United States, indicate that another source of homegrown radicalization is Western foreign policy, especially Western interventions in predominantly Muslim countries. Poll results support a two-factor model in which seeing the war on terrorism as a war on Islam is predicted by both perceived discrimination and grievance related to Western foreign policy. The National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetistsaddressed a barrier to return to practice of uncertified practitioners by replacing required direct patient care experiences with high-fidelity simulation.

Objectives

The aims of this study were to: (a) validate a set of clinical activities for their relevance to reentry and determine if they could be replicated using simulation, (b) evaluate the content validity of an existing simulation scenario containing the proposed clinical activities and determine its substitutability for a clinical practicum, and (c) evaluate the validity of two methods to assess simulation performance.

Approximately 150,000 First Nation, Metis, and Inuit children attended Canadian residential schools from the 1840s to 1996. Most residential school children had negative experiences of physical, verbal, and sexual abuse that led to parenting repercussions once these children became parents. These repercussions of residential schools led to a rate of neglect for First Nation children 12 times higher than non-First Nation children. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological descriptive study was to explore the lived experiences of second generation parents, who were schooled in residential schools as children and their current parenting styles. การศึกษานี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อศึกษาความชุกและปัจจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการเกิดโรคกลากบริเวณลำตัว ขาหนีบ และเท้าในทหารที่ฝึกในหลักสูตรการรบแบบจู่โจม วิธีการศึกษาเป็นการศึกษาแบบเชิงพรรณนา ณ จุดเวลาใดเวลาหนึ่ง ศึกษาในทหารที่ฝึกในหลักสูตรการรบแบบจู่โจม โรงเรียนสงครามพิเศษ จังหวัดลพบุรี ในช่วงเดือนเมษายน - พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2561 จำนวน 305 คน โดยใช้แบบสอบถามเกี่ยวกับปัจจัยต่างๆ การตรวจร่างกาย การตรวจ direct examination และการเพาะเลี้ยงเชื้อรา ทำการวิเคราะห์สถิติด้วย Multiple logistic regression ผลการศึกษา พบความชุกของโรคกลากบริเวณเท้ามากที่สุดร้อยละ 5.9 รองมาบริเวณขาหนีบพบร้อยละ 3.0 และบริเวณลำตัวพบร้อยละ 0.3 ปัจจัยที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับการการเกิดโรคกลากบริเวณเท้าอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ คือ ปัจจัยประวัติโรคกลาก คือ การเคยได้รับการวินิจฉัยจากแพทย์ว่าเป็นโรคกลากบริเวณเท้า ในช่วง 6 เดือนที่ผ่านมาก่อนนี้ (p-value = 0.036) และปัจจัยการทำงานบ้านและงานอดิเรก คือ การสัมผัสดินโดยเท้า (p-value = 0.033) ส่วนโรคกลากบริเวณขาหนีบไม่มีปัจจัยใดที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับการการเกิดโรคกลากบริเวณขาหนีบอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ สรุปได้ หากมีมาตรการป้องกันด้านสุขอนามัยส่วนบุคคลที่เหมาะสมร่วมกับมีการตรวจร่างกายในระบบผิวหนังก็จะสามารถลดการเกิดโรคและผลกระทบต่างๆ ที่ตามมาได้

Background Self-reported data are often used in research studies among military populations.

Objective The accuracy of self-reported musculoskeletal injury data among elite military personnel was assessed for issues with recall.

Design Cross-sectional study.

Setting Applied research laboratory at a military installation.

Participants A total of 101 subjects participated (age 28.5±5.6 years). Study participants were active duty military personnel, with no conditions that precluded them from full duty.

A new class of Cu(II) phenanthroline-phenazine complexes (developed in Dublin City University) have recently been reported to have the highest DNA binding constants of any copper therapeutic complex and at a similar level to Actinomycin. Objective—Previous mortality studies of U.S. Gulf War veterans through 2000 and 2004 have shown an increased risk of brain cancer mortality among some deployed individuals. When veterans possibly exposed to environmental contaminants associated with demolition of the Khamisiyah Ammunition Storage Facility at Khamisiyah, Iraq, have been compared to contemporaneously deployed unexposed veterans, the results have suggested increased risk for mortality from brain cancer among the exposed. Brain cancer mortality risk in this cohort has not been updated since 2004.
