Can The Superior Learnability Of Meaningful And Pleasant Words Be Transferred To Nonsense Syllables?*, Albert Silverstein, Richard A. Dienstbier Apr 1968

Can The Superior Learnability Of Meaningful And Pleasant Words Be Transferred To Nonsense Syllables?*, Albert Silverstein, Richard A. Dienstbier

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The Ss in 2 experiments first learned a PA list of words as responses to nonsense syllables. In 1 condition the words differed in meaningfulness (M) and in the other condition the words differed in pleasantness (PL). Next, Ss learned a 2nd PA list of the same syllables as responses to numbers. High-M words were learned faster than low-M words, but did not transfer either this difference in learning or the difference in rated M to the syllables. Pleasant words were learned faster than indifferent words in one experiment (men’s) but not in the other (women’s). In neither experiment did …

Present-Day Psychiatry, Henry D. Lederer Jan 1968

Present-Day Psychiatry, Henry D. Lederer

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

As part of the excitement and challenge of our times, psychiatry shares with the rest of human activity a soul-searching, candid questioning of principles and practices and a responsibility for developing new perspectives and patterns of action. During these times when there seems to be a strong swing toward conformity and stereotypy in our society, there is also an intense counteraction—especially in those under 30—of questioning all tradition, respecting no sacred cows. These phenomena lead to heated debates, voices raised in anger, and hot letters to editors; but, through all of the dust raised, I believe we can see encouraging …

Some Issues In Human Development, Victor C. Vaughan Iii Jan 1968

Some Issues In Human Development, Victor C. Vaughan Iii

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In summary, then, there are deeply rooted biological forces upon which we draw unwittingly for attitudes and behavior. There are pressing problems before us, ranging from war and slum riots to the misery and hopelessness of hundreds of thousands of infants and children leading empty and desperate lives in an unproductive way without society ever noticing that something preventable and irrevocable is happening. All of us, as citizens devoted to the healthiest kind of childhood and adulthood for our children, know that this represents an appalling tragedy for the individual. Multiplied by the hundreds of millions, it may represent a …

A Psychiatrist Listens To Dental Complaints, Henry D. Lederer Jan 1968

A Psychiatrist Listens To Dental Complaints, Henry D. Lederer

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

When your chairman invited me to meet with you to discuss some issues connecting psychiatry and dentistry, my immediate response was both intense and almost reflexive. I experienced an immediate strong uneasiness and desire to avoid facing you. This reaction impressed me as being neither rational nor appropriate, since my more sensible side could see good reasons for an exchange of views between dentists and psychiatrists. Therefore, as is the custom of most of us working in psychiatry, I tried to examine my own reaction, and in doing so came upon thoughts and feelings which indicated that I do not …

Lasting Biological Effects Of Early Influences, René Dubos Jan 1968

Lasting Biological Effects Of Early Influences, René Dubos

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In conclusion: The environment does more than affect our well-being in the here and now. It molds the young, physically and mentally, and thereby determines almost irreversibly their future and the evolution of society.

The Ambient Air, Edith Iglauer Jan 1968

The Ambient Air, Edith Iglauer

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Dogs, rats, mice, guinea pigs, donkeys, men, women, and children--a whole world breathing, and nobody knows exactly what we are breathing or exactly how it affects us. Dr. Robert Horton, an epidemiologist who was formerly a professor at the University of Michigan and now presides, from a desk in Cincinnati, over the government's Health Effects Research Program, spent several hours discussing the progress of air-pollution research with a caller not long ago, and then, in a matter-of-fact voice, said, "The British reduced cholera and typhoid in the nineteenth century before they knew bacteria existed, and we may have to regulate …

Partial Reinforcement With A Small Number Of Acquisition Trials : The Effects Of Reward Technique, Samuel Joseph Thios Jan 1968

Partial Reinforcement With A Small Number Of Acquisition Trials : The Effects Of Reward Technique, Samuel Joseph Thios

Master's Theses

There have been a number of investigators who have noted superior resistance to extinction of a runway locomotion response by rats which were trained under partial reinforcement schedules as compared with rats trained under continuous reinforcement schedules (e.g., Logan, Beier & Kincaid, 1956; Weinstock, 1954; Badia, 1965; McCoy & Marx, 1965; Black & Spence, 1965).

The present experiment, involving four acquisition trials and nine extinction trials, was designed to investigate the influence of reward technique in an experimental context which systematically examined the effects of thwarting and nonthwarting reward techniques.

An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Moderator Variables Developed By Three Techniques, James Porter Tucker Jr. Jan 1968

An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Moderator Variables Developed By Three Techniques, James Porter Tucker Jr.

Master's Theses

In a recent article, Hobert and Dunnette (1967) maintained that compared to the Absolute-difference and Algebraic-difference techniques Quadrant Analysis should yield the more effective moderators. Their assertion was based on the reasoning that more homogenous subgrouping should yield moderators with increased sensitivity to error. The present study was carried out as an empirical investigation of their assertions. Further, the design of the study permitted an investigation of moderator function.

The total sample (n=333) of male college students was randomly divided into a developmental sample and a cross-validation sample. Employing the aforementioned techniques a total of five moderator scales were developed …

Effects Of Winning And Losing On The Interaction Pattern Of Group Partners, Jarell F. Killian Jan 1968

Effects Of Winning And Losing On The Interaction Pattern Of Group Partners, Jarell F. Killian

Theses and Dissertations

Of special interest in the field of social psychology are the differences among groups in their functioning that distinguishes them from one another. Cartwright and Zander (1960) speak of this in pointing out that some groups work together with a great deal more success, satisfaction, and with a greater sense of togetherness than others. Some groups are racked with dissent, insouciance, and such a failure to meet goals and standards as to result in a slow death of inactivity. These differences persist even under basically identical circumstances. Concerning this point, Pepitone and Kleiner (1957, p. 192) state:

Everyday observations of …
