An Investigation Of The Ability To Predict The Frequency Of Occurrence Of Words Between Normal And Articulatory Defective College-Age Individuals, William Joseph Divers Iii Jan 1973

An Investigation Of The Ability To Predict The Frequency Of Occurrence Of Words Between Normal And Articulatory Defective College-Age Individuals, William Joseph Divers Iii

All Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to see if normal speakers and misarticulators differentially predict the frequency of occurrence of 80 words containing one or more of the five most frequently misarticulated speech sounds. The 80 words were selected from a study by Ausherman and Black. The subjects were 20 college-age individuals, ten with normal articulation and ten with articulation disorders. There were five males and females in each group.

All subjects predicted the frequency of occurrence of 80 words on the basis of an eight-point scale. Error scores were computed, used as a criterion measure, and statistically analyzed and …

The Residual Effects Of Long-Term Amphetamine Intoxication On Avoidance Learning And Retention In Rats, Larry Paul Liberty Jan 1973

The Residual Effects Of Long-Term Amphetamine Intoxication On Avoidance Learning And Retention In Rats, Larry Paul Liberty

All Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of chronic long-term amphetamine intoxication on active avoidance learning and retention in rats. The two experiments in the study were designed to investigate whether the effects noted during acute administration of the drug would be present at intervals of 2, 8 and 14 days after cessation of a chronic drug treatment. Experiment 1 indicated that rats trained 40 minutes after injection of the drug acquired the active avoidance task at a significantly faster rate than rats injected with saline, but their retention levels were the same. The results of Experiment …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Accented Words In The Spontaneous Speech Of Stutterers And The Frequency Of Stuttering Occurrence, Cherie Richardson Jan 1973

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Accented Words In The Spontaneous Speech Of Stutterers And The Frequency Of Stuttering Occurrence, Cherie Richardson

All Master's Theses

This study explored the influence of word accent upon the precipitation of audible stutterings in the spontaneous speech of five adult male stutterers. The results indicated that three of the subjects stuttered with significant frequency upon accented words and two of the subjects evidenced a definite tendency to stutter on accented words. It was proposed that accented words may be a locus of stuttering in sentences and phrases of spontaneous speech in addition and perhaps relative to the four loci postulated by earlier research.

Introduction, Thomas L. Shaffer Jan 1973

Introduction, Thomas L. Shaffer

Journal Articles

This symposium abounds with learning and insight, but one should not overlook the fact that its purposes and its effect are revolution. Institutional confinement of the "mentally ill" in America is a massive social failure and a festering evil. These authors lawyers, social scientists, scholars, psychiatrists, and students have a target in their sights, and they are not out primarily to analyze the target; they are out to destroy it.

Preoperative Teaching And Its Relationship To Postoperative Recovery, Eleanor Wiese Sep 1972

Preoperative Teaching And Its Relationship To Postoperative Recovery, Eleanor Wiese

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of the study was to find out whether an organized, preoperative teaching program would make a difference in patient recovery from intra-abdominal surgery.

A review of literature served as a guide in defining the needs of patients and in developing class content. An outline, which included deep breathing, coughing, turning, bed exercises and what to expect, was made for the class. Nine slides were developed specifically for the teaching sessions. To reinforce the teaching, a handout was given to each patient.

It was hypothesized that the experimental group of patients would require less pain medication, develop fewer complications …

The Possible Causes And Remediation Of Inverted Vision, Archie J. Beamer Aug 1972

The Possible Causes And Remediation Of Inverted Vision, Archie J. Beamer

All Master's Theses

The primary purpose of this investigation was to determine possible corrective methods for inverted vision. The visual problem is usually outgrown in the early teens, but these children who experience the problem tend to be classified as retarded because they cannot read. An intensive research of the literature for possible causes and corrective methods revealed inconclusive proof. However, two boys who were diagnosed to have inverted vision were given perceptual training exercises. The subjects responded to the treatment and in a short time were started on a reading readiness program. Although only two cases were found on which to experiment, …

Effects Of Dietary Factors And Morphine Administration On Voluntary Alcohol Consumption And Dopamine Metabolism In Rats, Claudia Smithson Aug 1972

Effects Of Dietary Factors And Morphine Administration On Voluntary Alcohol Consumption And Dopamine Metabolism In Rats, Claudia Smithson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The effect of diet and dietary additives on voluntary alcohol consumption in male Sprague-Dawley rats was studied. Alcohol intake measured weekly and reported as ml of a 10% solution ingested per 100 grams body weight. A four week pre-experimental period was designed to determine individual tendencies to drink and thus to eliminate the high and low drinkers from the study. No difference was found in alcohol intake with either starch or sugar as the carbohydrate source; however, there was a greater weight gain ( p < .025) in those animals consuming sugar-based diets. Rats on poor-quality diets containing minimal amounts of vitamins and minerals continued to gradually increase alcohol consumption during the study. This diet, supplemented with coffee, caused the greatest significant increase in alcohol intake and the lowest weight gains. Addition of coffee to the diets significantly increased alcohol consumption (p< .005) but decreased growth rate (p < .0005) . However, when the poor quality diets were supplemented with vitamins and minerals, alcohol consumption was reduced by about 50% (p < .005) and weight gain was significantly increased (p < .0005).

The daily intraperitoneal administration of morphine sulfate significantly decreased alcohol intake (p < .02) and the per cent of total fluid consumed as alcohol (p < .02) but did not effect water consumption.

An attempt was …

Effects Of Certain Linguistic Parameters Upon The Responses Of Preschool Subjects To Specific Dichotic Listening Tasks, Peggy J. Weber Jul 1972

Effects Of Certain Linguistic Parameters Upon The Responses Of Preschool Subjects To Specific Dichotic Listening Tasks, Peggy J. Weber

Dissertations and Theses

Listening, as a communication skill, is an essential factor in the normal language development of the' child. Until recently, however, there has been very little research conducted concerning the linguistic parameters that influence the ability to listen. Thus, this investigation was designed to study the effects of two linguistic parameters, construction and semantic constraints on the verbal responses of preschool children in a dichotic listening task.

Fifteen children, between the ages of 5-3 to 6-8, were presented with four dichotic listening tasks consisting of 80 stimuli, (40 sentences and 40 pseudo-sentences). The children were asked to report the message delivered …
