An Evaluation Form For Professional Staff Nurses, Barbara Jean Brauer Jun 1959

An Evaluation Form For Professional Staff Nurses, Barbara Jean Brauer

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The problem of this study was to develop an evaluation form to measure the differentiation in quality of nursing care given by professional staff nurses. It was hoped that the evaluation form could be used by administrators of nursing service as a basis for giving pay increases based on nursing performance.

A review of nursing literature did not reveal the existence of an evaluation form based on verifiable data of performance upon which an objective evaluation could be made.

The critical incident technique was used to gather the data for the study. The respondents were nursing supervisory personnel employed in …

A Selected Bibliography Suitable For Use In Overseas Missionary Nursing Preparation, Anna May Vaughan Jun 1959

A Selected Bibliography Suitable For Use In Overseas Missionary Nursing Preparation, Anna May Vaughan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Missionary nursing, as one form of nursing and as a method of endeavor, has been neglected in both nursing and mission literature.

It was the purpose of this study to identify, classify, and list bibliographical material which is applicable and would serve as a source of information to those preparing for, and directing others towards, overseas mission nursing.

The material for the bibliography was obtained through three sources (1) twenty-five institutions of religious education which offered courses in missions, (2) personal interviews, and (3) personal library research. The volumes included in this bibliography were selected on the basis of the …

An Investigation Of The Feasibility Of Establishing A School Of Nursing In Connection With Bella Vista Hospital, M. Eulalia White Jun 1959

An Investigation Of The Feasibility Of Establishing A School Of Nursing In Connection With Bella Vista Hospital, M. Eulalia White

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The Bella Vista Hospital has had problems of staffing since it opened. Nurse shortages have been typical of all insular hospitals. There have been no national Seventh-day Adventist nurses available and no school where they could receive nursing education. The question has been raised whether it would be feasible to establish a school of nursing in connection with the hospital. This would give opportunity for Seventh-day Adventist young people who seek nursing education and would help prepare nurses to staff the hospital.

Through a survey of the Seventh-day Adventist church and youth membership in the Inter-American Division, it was found …

Pharmacological Studies Of Antidiabetic Chinese Herbs, Mun Fa Lee Jun 1959

Pharmacological Studies Of Antidiabetic Chinese Herbs, Mun Fa Lee

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Rehmannia glutinosa, Atractylus ovata, and Polygonatum chinense have all been employed by the Chinese as oral antidiabetic agents and reported by Min (1928), Kin (1931), and Li et al. (1936) to possess hypoglycemic activity. This prompted the pharmacological studies of these herbs.

Materials and methods. Their pharmacognosy was condensed from all available Chinese and scientific literature. Preliminary chemical and physical analyses included determinations for moisture, ash, crude fat, carbohydrates, protein, phosphorus, pH, alkaloids, melting point, and spectroscopy. Employing the Somogyi-Nelson method, their glycemic activity was studied in rats, rabbits, and dogs. Stress reactions were minimized. The effect …

Activities Of The Head Nurse In A Selected Medical Unit Of The Loma Linda Sanitarium And Hospital, Bessie Wat

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study was conducted on a selected medical unit of the Loma Linda Sanitarium and Hospital. The normative survey method as recommended by the Division of Nursing Resources was used. The morning and afternoon head nurses or their reliefs were …

A Study Of The Influence Of Acid-Base Changes On Myocardial And Vasopressor Responses To Arterenol And Epinephrine, Earl E. Aldinger Jan 1959

A Study Of The Influence Of Acid-Base Changes On Myocardial And Vasopressor Responses To Arterenol And Epinephrine, Earl E. Aldinger

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

It is well known that when the body is subjected to various stress conditions there is almost always a reflex release of certain neurohumoral substances in an attempt to compensate for these abnormal conditions. Acid-base changes, for example, are some of the most frequent occurring under these conditions. As mentioned throughout this thesis there is a direct correlation between acidosis end extreme hypotension or shock. The objective of these experiments was to investigate and determine the influence of acidosis on the cardiovascular response to the sympatho-adrenal hormones, arterenol and epinephrine, which are released in large amounts during shock. These studies …
