Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Background: Pneumothorax with persistent air leak (PAL) is a debilitating condition. Patients with PAL often require prolonged chest drainage, with associated complications, such as, hospital-acquired infections, thromboembolism, and deconditioning. Endobronchial valves (EBVs) are an approved bronchoscopic treatment for PAL and may allow earlier chest tube removal and hospital discharge. Current evidence supporting the use of EBV is limited to case series and uncontrolled studies. EBVs are usually used as a last resort when other treatments failed. Whether early referral for EBV placement is feasible and can reduce hospital length of stay in patients with pneumothorax and PAL has not been …

Endocarditis Caused By Candida (Candidozyma) Auris, Farah Ebrahim, Mzee Ngunga, Abdulaziz Abeid, Hilda Nasibwa, Newnex Mongare, Rodney Adam

Internal Medicine, East Africa

Candida (Candidozyma) auris has emerged as a hospital-acquired pathogen and was first reported in East Asia in 2009. Infective endocarditis due to C. auris has been rarely reported, while other Candida species account for < 2% of infective endocarditis (IE) cases. Herein we report three cases of endocarditis caused by C. auris , including a native aortic valve, a native tricuspid valve, and a prosthetic valve. Each of these cases had been in healthcare settings months to years earlier that were the likely sources of their infec- tions. These cases suggest the possibility for indolent but life-threatening infections from C. auris . ©2026 The Authors. Metabolomics In Renal Cystic Disease: Links To Mechanisms And Identification Of Pathways For Potential Prediagnosis, Liyan Chen, David Broadhurst, Armaghan Shafaei, Jacqueline K. Phillips, Shijie Tang, Hayley Abbiss

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a common hereditary kidney disorder with an insidious onset and complex mechanisms, making early diagnosis challenging. Current diagnostic methods, including imaging and genetic testing, have limitations. Imaging detects cysts only once formed, and genetic testing is costly, labor-intensive, and unable to guarantee complete diagnostic accuracy or predict onset and progression. Metabolomics may offer an approach to uncover PKD mechanisms by detecting metabolic alterations that precede clinical manifestations, enabling identification of disease-specific biomarkers, and providing earlier and more practical detection than imaging or genetic testing. This review synthesizes existing metabolomics studies of human PKD and renal …

BACKGROUND: Cancer immunology research has traditionally focused on tumor-infiltrating leukocytes, but the role of the peripheral leukocytes remains understudied. Since tumor-infiltrating leukocytes are recruited from the blood, circulating immune profiles may provide prognostic insights obtainable before surgery, reflecting overall immune competence.

METHODS: We analyzed treatment-naïve blood samples from 134 stage I-III colorectal cancer (CRC) patients using a nested case-control design (33 recurrences, 45 deaths; median follow-up: 7.4 years). Circulating leukocyte subsets were estimated using methylation cytometry applied to genome-wide methylation profiles. Cox regression models estimated associations between leukocyte metrics and disease-free and overall survival, adjusting for clinical factors.

RESULTS: Higher …
