Occupational radiation exposure has a clear association with long-term health effects and has a particular impact on women, trainees, and supporting staff. There is a reliance on limited, traditional radiation protection and nonergonomic equipment, which carries associated orthopedic injury rates with adverse impacts on both individual career trajectories and health systems, and with significant challenges to widespread implementation of enhanced radiation protection devices. During the 2025 Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions Scientific Sessions in Washington, DC, a multidisciplinary Think Tank summit was convened and included representatives from multiple stakeholders, including other professional societies, advocacy groups, and industry partners. Young people have enormous potential for growth and innovation, but not all have access to resources and opportunities to explore, achieve their dreams, and contribute immensely to society. Absence or limited opportunities and resources pose great challenges to young people’s aspirations. Through a review of literature and study of some countries young people globally face challenges, though at varying degrees like unemployment, limited access to healthcare, social services, and education; lack of professional support, skills acquisition and retraining, and political exclusion; judicial inequity, loneliness, and poor parenting. There still exist policies, structures, or regulations that encourage racial and ethnic or …

Cells communicate through ligand-receptor (LR) signaling interactions, but identifying when and where these interactions are active remains challenging. We developed CytoSignal to infer the locations and dynamics of cell-cell communication at cellular resolution from spatial transcriptomic data. Here we show that our cellular resolution, spatially resolved signaling scores enable several important analyses-identifying spatial gradients in signaling strength, quantifying the locations of contact-dependent and diffusible interactions, detecting signaling-associated genes and identifying differential signaling across multisample data. Additionally, we can predict the temporal dynamics of a signaling interaction at each spatial location. We experimentally validate our results in situ by proximity ligation …

The rising incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer has renewed attention to colorectal adenomas in adolescents and young adults (AYA), although these lesions remain rare and poorly characterized in adolescents. Lack of age-specific guidance creates uncertainty regarding genetic evaluation, surveillance intervals, and long-term management when these lesions are identified in adolescents. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence and expert perspective on epidemiology, evaluation, endoscopic management, surveillance, genetic considerations, and psychosocial implications of incidentally identified colorectal adenomas across the AYA spectrum, with emphasis on adolescents as a distinct clinical population. Available data largely derive from adults aged 20-49 years but suggest that …

BACKGROUND: Nigeria is among the leading countries contributing to the burden of cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy (CP) is the commonest physical disability in childhood, accounting for 16.2% of child neurology referrals. Many cases of CP are preventable with simple interventions such as neonatal resuscitation and effective phototherapy. Lack of reliable data on the burden of disease limits comprehensive national policy directed to the prevention, holistic care and rehabilitation of patients with cerebral palsy in Nigeria. Therefore, to effectively address this problem, this study aimed to describe the pooled prevalence of CP in Nigeria, its potential causes and types.
METHODS: This …

Population Health, East Africa
Background
Aflatoxin contamination is a significant yet under-addressed food safety challenge in low-resource settings, driven by a complex interplay of environmental, agricultural, and socio-economic factors. Limited access to agricultural inputs, inadequate post-harvest handling and storage, and weak regulatory enforcement alongside food scarcity and climate change heighten the risk of contamination and exposure. Human exposure is associated with serious health consequences, including hepatocellular carcinoma, immune suppression, and childhood stunting. Although aflatoxin is increasingly recognized as a global food safety concern, little is known about community-level knowledge, risk perceptions, and preventive practices. This study examined household heads’ awareness, perceptions, and behaviours related …

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly applied to biomedical research, but most current systems remain limited to specific tasks, data types, or biological scales. This makes it difficult to connect molecular alterations, organelle dysfunction, cellular behavior, tissue remodeling, organ physiology, systemic regulation, and whole-body phenotypes into coherent biological reasoning. In this Perspective, we propose the Full-Body AI Agent as a hypothetical multi-agent framework and conceptual blueprint for future systemic biology and precision medicine, rather than a fully implemented software platform. This framework envisions a supervisory Full-Body AI Agent coordinating seven biological-level agents, namely Molecule, Organelle, Cell, Tissue, Organ, Organ System, and …

Deformable image registration plays an essential role in various medical image tasks. Existing deep learning-based deformable registration frameworks primarily utilize convolutional neural networks (CNNs) or Transformers to learn features to predict the deformations. However, the lack of semantic information in the learned features limits the registration performance. Furthermore, the similarity metric of the loss function is often evaluated only in the pixel space, which ignores the matching of high-level anatomical features and can lead to deformation folding. To address these issues, in this work, we proposed LDM-Morph, an unsupervised deformable registration algorithm for medical image registration. LDM-Morph integrated features extracted …

INTRODUCTION: Nephrotic syndrome (NS), a common glomerular disease in children, is classified based on response to corticosteroid therapy as either steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome (SSNS), or steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS). However, there are no current reliable predictors of therapy response at initial clinical presentation.
METHODS: To evaluate predictors, we conducted genome-wide association studies, developed polygenic risk scores (PRS) for therapy response and analyzed classical HLA alleles in 1,997 children (994 discovery and 1,003 replication/validation cohorts) previously unstudied children with NS and 3,558 ancestry-matched control individuals.
RESULTS: A significant association with HLA loci defined by variants in HLA-DQB1, HLA-DRB1, and HLA-DQA1 were …

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma of unknown primary (HNSCCUP) comprises 2%-5% of head and neck squamous cell cancers (HNSCC). Its coexistence with abdominal paraganglioma is exceedingly rare. We report a unique case of a 48-year-old male with HNSCCUP presenting as cervical lymphadenopathy and a coexisting abdominal paraganglioma. 18 F-FDG showed uptake in both lesions, while 68 Ga-DOTATATE was avid only in paraganglioma, and 68 Ga-DOTA-FAPI-04 was avid only in cervical nodes. These differential uptake patterns reflect distinct tumor biology and underscore the potential for tailoring theranostic treatment strategies with 177 Lu/ 90 Y isotopes for FAPI-avid squamous cell cancers …

Early institutional care (IC; orphanage) is a severe form of early psychosocial deprivation with documented long-term effects on social and caregiving functioning. Despite longstanding interest in oxytocin (OT) as a key neuroendocrine modulator of affiliative behavior and stress, OT dynamics and synchrony during mother-child interaction among mothers with IC history remain poorly understood. To our knowledge, this is the first study to characterize maternal and child OT responses and dyadic OT covariation in this population. We measured salivary OT in mothers with IC history and mothers raised in biological family care (BFC), and in their children, at baseline and after …

The project is conducted in collaboration with Dr. Eric Espinoza-Wade to develop a secure, accurate wearable sensing system for infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) who have experienced asymmetric perinatal brain injury (APBI). Infants with APBI are at increased risk for developing unilateral cerebral palsy; however, clinical diagnosis is often delayed until 12–24 months of age, limiting opportunities for early intervention.
The goal of the project is to design a wearable system that securely attaches small, lightweight accelerometers to an infant’s limbs to quantify bilateral limb movement. Triaxial acceleration data will be used to detect movement asymmetries, which …

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a climate-sensitive tick-borne zoonosis that remains a significant public health concern in Uganda, where temperature and vapour pressure deficit influence tick ecology and consequently disease transmission. This study aimed to develop and analyse a climate-driven stochastic model for CCHF transmission among ticks, livestock, and humans under environmental variability in Uganda. A compartmental transmission model was formulated and extended into a stochastic differential equation framework by incorporating multiplicative environmental noise. Climate-dependent tick recruitment, development, and mortality were parameterized using district-level temperature and vapour pressure deficit data to capture spatial heterogeneity in transmission risk. Independent And Combined Effects Of Early-Life Iron Deficiency And Antibiotic Exposure On Growth And Hematological Outcomes In A Piglet Model, Ginger M. Fitzpatrick
Master's Theses
Iron deficiency (ID) affects over 2 billion individuals globally. Children under 5 are at increased risk of ID due to rapid growth and are especially vulnerable to its negative consequences because of iron’s essential role in cognitive development and immune maturation. ID is the leading cause of iron deficiency anemia (IDA), with IDA affecting approximately 40% of children in this age group. Antibiotic (abx) exposure is also prevalent during early life and may disrupt growth and through gut dysbiosis, with increasing use posing additional risk in younger populations. Geographically, there is overlap in regions with high anemia prevalence and those …

TWIST1 encodes a highly conserved basic helix–loop–helix transcription factor essential for embryonic development from Drosophila to humans. TWIST1 activity is regulated by post‐translational modifications, including phosphorylation during development and cancer metastasis. Recent cancer studies identified acetylation of lysines K73 and K76 as a novel regulatory modification that shifts TWIST1 from a repressive to an activating state during epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EMT). However, the developmental and in vivo functions of TWIST1 acetylation remain unknown. To investigate the physiological role, we generated the first acetyl‐deficient Twist1 K73,76R K73,76R and acetyl‐mimic Twist1 K73,76Q K73,76Q mouse models using CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated genome editing. Targeted sequencing confirmed substitutions, …

Predicting Clinical Outcomes Of Non-Specific Low Back Pain By Studying The Interaction Of Clinical And Demographic Factors Of A Retrospective Data Set, Erica Michelle Fernandes
Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to investigate demographic factors, including age, gender, body mass index (BMI), race, marital status, insurance type, severity of disease (initial pain level), and clinical factors such as number of visits (no. of visits) at physical therapy (PT), length of time at PT and the type of clinician either physical therapist versus physical therapy assistant (PTA), that most predict PT clinical outcomes in patients with nonspecific low back pain (NSLBP) and see if there is an interaction between demographic and clinical variables.
Methods
The current study is a retrospective, cross-sectional, observational study using secondary electronic …
Exploring How Therapist Trainees’ Mentalization, Attachment Styles, And The Working Alliance Impact Treatment Outcomes In Psychotherapy, Hanali Gilbert
Exploring How Therapist Trainees’ Mentalization, Attachment Styles, And The Working Alliance Impact Treatment Outcomes In Psychotherapy, Hanali Gilbert
Dissertations
A burgeoning area of research within the past 30 years has sought to identify which specific therapist factors contribute to differential treatment outcomes (Barkham et al., 2017). The purpose of the current naturalistic study was to explore how two personal characteristics of therapist trainees, mentalization capacity and attachment styles, impact early treatment outcomes at two Midwestern psychology training clinics. This study also examined whether therapist mentalization and the working alliance interacted to influence client outcomes. Therapists completed the Mentalization Scale (MentS; Dimitrijević et al., 2018) and the Experiences in Close Relationships scale (ECR; Brennan et al., 1998), while the Working …

Computer perception (CP) technologies are poised to deliver near real-time behavioral insights with high precision. As technical barriers recede, our field's ethical focus must shift from "Can we trust the data?" to "Should we use it here, and how?" We propose a contextual ethics framework that: (1) defines the appropriate scope of CP integration; (2) advocates codesigned roadmaps to manage expectations and epistemic conflict; (3) expands evaluation beyond performance metrics to humanistic outcomes; and (4) anticipates future high performance systems to safeguard dignity, empathy, and shared decision-making in clinical care.
Steroid Receptor Coactivators In Immunity – From Function To Emerging Translational Opportunities, Yosef Gilad, David M Lonard

Steroid Receptor Coactivators (SRCs) comprise a family of three paralogous proteins. As transcriptional coactivators SRCs are essential for enabling the full transcriptional output of nuclear receptors (NRs). They regulate the transcriptional activity of nearly all NRs as well as a wide range of non-NR transcription factors. The central role of SRCs in gene regulation is reflected in their broad impact on major physiological and pathological processes, such as development, reproduction, metabolism, immunity and cancer. Although the major impact of SRCs on human health and disease established them as attractive therapeutic targets, their effective pharmacological targeting remained a challenge for nearly …

Over the past 15 years, genetic studies of psychiatric disorders have provided important insight into the contribution of both common variants of small effect, as well as rare exonic and copy number variants with large effect sizes. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) allow us to understand the intricate polygenicity characteristic of many psychiatric disorders. However, a considerable proportion of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) implicated in these disorders localize to the non-coding regions of the genome. Unraveling the molecular mechanisms that underlie the etiology of psychiatric illnesses requires integration using functional genomics approaches. Functional genomics methods are critical for developing a mechanistic …
