Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Salmonellosis suis or pig typhus, also designated as pig typhoid, infectious necrotic enteritis, or "necro," is an infectious disease among young pigs. It constitutes a major factor in the mortality of juvenile swine, and as such must be regarded as a more or less perennial hazard in swine production. Infectious necrotic enteritis caused by Salmonella suipestifer is the subject of the present publication.

A Study Of The Renal Vascular Supply In The Domestic Cat, Elizabeth Rosen

Bachelors’ Theses

Studies on the normal and abnormal vascularization of the renal vessels in the domestic cat (felis domestica) indicate the frequency of anomalies that occur, but in most of the studies it is the inferior vena cava that is most often recorded. Among the occasional references to several renal veins or arteries we have Huntington and McClure, Elmer Butler, Gaylord Bates, William Darrach, and C.H. Fortune. Yet no study seems to have been made of individuals of any particular class. A superficial observation seems to indicate a large number of cats used in the laboratory had multiple renal veins. Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Advantage was taken of an opportunity to study the effects of penicillin on Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, the causative organism of swine erysipelas. Owing to the fact that swine cannot readily be infected with erysipelas by artificial methods, pigeons which are highly susceptible to the disease, were selected to serve as experimental animals. It was the purpose of these studies to ascertain whether or not the swine erysipelas bacillus is sensitive to the drug and incidentally to determine the possibility of finding application of penicillin in the treatment of swine.

Present day knowledge concerning the liver is derived from many sources and the accumulation of many methods of investigation. Sugar, which is needed by the body for energy, is stored in the liver as glycogen. Claude Bernard (26), an eminent physiologist, was the first to suspect that carbohydrates were stored in the liver. Faulty glycogen synthesis and hydrolysis results in one of our most widespread diseases, diabetes. Thus, many biochemists and physiologists have tried to find the mechanism of the process, and the primary and secondary facts which affect glycogenesis and glycogenolysis.
