The computer is here. It has become a part of medicine. We have talked for a day and a half now about some of the applications of computers in medicine, and of the future of at least some of these applications. There is a language problem in communicating with computers, but certainly the future is going to see a medical language, comparable to the scientific language Fortran, built to enable physicians to communicate with the computer. Some aspects of the radiosensitivity of single human cells have been examined in vitro. So far, all factors which tend to modify sensitivity to x-radiation appear not to modify (or to modify less effectively) the effects upon single cells of high-dE/dx radiation. Whenever the hazards of heavily ionizing radiations are being evaluated, chronic exposure must be considered equivalent to acute exposure, and any attempts to modify the effects of densely ionizing radiations at the cellular level are probably useless. In the case of cultured human cells, the RBE is dependent upon the endpoint because of the differently-shaped survival curves. Thus, …

An attempt has been made to give in this article a review of some of our activities since I first met Ernst Fischer in Göttingen many years ago. I have not related the work of our laboratory to that of others. Also, I have only described observations made on chromaffin tissue. The catecholamines have acquired a much wider importance with their discovery in adrenergic neurones, and, more recently, in the central nervous system. The rate of progress in virus research today is so rapid that for many the present is the future. Consequently, in order to discuss the future in comprehensible fashion, I must talk about the present state of affairs--to discuss current knowledge which furnishes the basis for contemporary enormous interest in viruses. It is precisely those considerations which will furnish the springboard for future progress in understanding and controlling the effects of virus infections.

Fifty-five percent of all deaths in the United States are ascribed to cardiovascular disease. The vast majority of these deaths are due directly or indirectly to atherosclerosis and its ischemic complications (Am. Heart Assoc., 1965; U.S. President's Commission on Heart Disease, Cancer and Stroke, 1964). Atherosclerosis is defined in Dorland's dictionary (24th edition) as "a lesion of large and medium-sized arteries with deposits in the intima of yellowish plaques containing cholesterol, lipoid material and lipophages." Historical. General descriptions of intertidal zonation have been published by many workers for almost all littoral areas, both marine and lacustrine (Doty, 1957; Glynn, 1965; Hedgpeth, 1957; Lewis, 1964; Pennak, 1951). The fact that animal species of the sandy shore are few in number eliminates many complex interspecific reactions, while great numbers of individuals make population studies feasible. In addition to certain general works (Dahl, 1952; Pirrie et al., 1932; Yonge, 1950) a number of papers have discussed causative factors or mechanisms for animal zonation.
