The successful application of chronic dialysis and/or renal transplantation to patients with chronic uremia has sometimes obscured the fact that significant progress has also been made in our understanding of other therapeutic approaches to chronic renal failure. These less dramatic advances are commonly labeled "conservative" in nature, yet they have contributed decisively to the welfare of many uremic patients by improving their sense of wellbeing and delaying their need for such types of therapy as regularly repetitive dialysis. I shall comment first on certain general principles of management and then review some of the scientific therapeutic maneuvers and concepts that …

The Use Of A Computer In The Diagnosis Of Intracranial Tumours, G. H. Du Boulay

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Experiments in the use of a computer as an aid to diagnosis of intracranial tumours have been started at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in collaboration with The City University. The computer can estimate the probability that a patient has any given type of tumour by comparing the results of tests with those obtained in previous patients whose diagnoses have been established. The computer also determines which is the best investigation, from a statistical point of view, to perform next on the patient in order to confirm the diagnosis.

Most, if not all, ingested protein is transported across the gut as its constituent amino acids. Thus, the way the gut handles amino acids is an important physiologic problem, and their mishandling by the gut in disease states represents an important threat to general body activities. I propose to discuss some of the knowledge that has been gathered over the past 10 to 15 years concerning the mechanisms of amino acid absorption. One of the most fundamental problems of biology is how energy is transduced in living systems. It is a problem that has fascinated and absorbed a great many distinguished chemists, biochemists and physicists. I believe we have reached a stage in the development of our knowledge of the mechanism of energy transduction which now permits us to see the direction which leads to the final solution. It is with this development that I shall be concerned in this evening's lecture.

United States Naval Medical Research Unit 3: Publications

The NAMRU-3 Medical Zoology program began during Easter week of 1950. We had just closed the NAMRU-3 field station at Torit, in Equatoria Province of soulheastern Sudan, and were heading homeward to the United States. However, the offer to remain in Egypt for a year or two to develop a Medical Zoology department at NAMRU-3 provided an interesting challenge after working for several years in tropical forests and grasslands of Africa and other continents. The cover depicts the proposed addition to the present facilities to the School of Pharmacy. When completed at an estimated cost in excess of $1 million, the addition will double our laboratory and classroom space. The School of Pharmacy will occupy the entire third floor and a portion of the second floor in the proposed addition.

Experimental baits and sprays have given promising control of snails in cereals and pastures in the Geraldton-Dongara districts.

The problem of harvesting infested wheat crops has been overcome by attaching a specially designed rake in front of the header ccmb to remove snails from the plants.

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this presentation, the possible role of computer graphics in macromolecular chemistry is demonstrated by reference to a molecular model building program running on a computer with a graphics console. The program was developed to pursue studies in protein configurations. A description of the program is given together with examples of the display produced.
