Tetracyclines, originally isolated in the late 1940's and early 1950's from the mycelium of Streptomyces, have achieved major importance as therapeutic and prophylactic agents against a wide range of infections in human and veterinary medicine. They have also achieved great importance in agriculture where they are widely used to promote weight gain in livestock. Commercial production, during 1958 in the United States alone was 120 tons with a value of approximately $1 million per ton.

Serum Immunoglobulins In The Differential Diagnosis Between Intrahepatic Viral Jaundice And Extrahepatic Obstructive Jaundice, Gerald A. Logrippo, Thomas A. Fox, Melvin A. Block

Serum immunoglobulin levels are reported in 75 patients with jaundice: 32 with jaundice due to virus hepatitis and 43 with jaundice due to obstruction. The degrees and variations of serum immunoglobulins (Ig), (IgM, IgG and IgA) in virus hepatitis (IH and SH) with jaundice are compared with those found in obstructive jaundice. In 32 of the patients with jaundice from virus hepatitis, serum IgM (100%) and IgG (75%) were elevated above 2 Standard Deviations from the mean values. Neither IgM nor IgG levels were elevated above 2 Standard Deviations from the mean values in 33 of 43 patients (76.7%) with …

The Transfer Of Hydrogen In The Reduction Of Progesterone, William H. Kersey

Experimental female rats were given daily injections of synthetic estrogens for six months. The effect on rat ovarian 20α-OH-SDH was not definitive. Diethylstilbestrol and 17α-ethynylestradiol caused a significant drop in activity as compared with controls while mestranol caused a slight increase in activity. A synthetic progestin, medroxyprogesterone, had no apparent effect on the activity of the enzyme.

Rat ovarian 20α-OH-SDH was purified fivefold by ammonium sulfate fractionation and chromatography on DEAE-cellulose.

The homogeneity of the enzyme was checked by means of disc gel electrophoresis. At pH 8.2 no significant contamination appeared in the electrophoretic pattern, but at pH 9.0 five …

This study confirms the work of Etheridge (1964) in suggesting the peculiarity of the genus Phrynosoma within the family Iguanidae. The anterior osteology and myology of Phrynosoma platyrhinos platyrhinos Girard and Phrynosoma douglassi hernandesi Girard indicate Phrynosoma to be highly specialized and to differ significantlv from the Iguanid structure as portrayed by Oelrich (1956), Robison and Tanner (1962), and Avery and Tanner (1964). They also differ because of: ( 1 ) absence of lacrimal and postfrontal bones; (2) occurrence of occipital (also mandibular and temporal) spines; (3) posterodorsal shift of the skull elements; (4) divided nature of the M. sternohyoideus, …

Cercariac of Schistosoma mansoni were studied for glycogen utilization, uptake of glucose from solution, lactic acid production, and respiration.

Using the anthrone method of determination of carbohydrate, the amount of glycogen used by a single cercaria in 4 hours is determined as 43.2 x 10^-4 μg ± 6.6 x 10^-4 μg.

Glucose was not observed to have been used from solution under the conditions of the experiment, even in the presence of trehalose. The determinations were made by the Glucostat method.

This study was designed to (1) demonstrate the dimensional changes resulting from opening the suture, (2) test the stability of the repaired suture two months following the removal of the retentive appliance, and (3) demonstrate new bone growth in the opened suture by the use of Tetracycline staining. The animal chosen was the Macaca mulatta monkey.

Intact skulls, sectioned skulls and dental casts were measured following the experiment. The skulls were mounted in clear plastic and sectioned antero-posteriorly for the purposes of study and measurements. The following changes were noted as a result of this experiment:

A convenience sample of 480 Caucasians using original diagnostic cephalometric films was selected to evaluate the nasion-menton and sella-gonion distances and their relationship to the mandibular plane angle.

The anterior facial height was represented by the nasion-menton plane. The posterior facial height was represented by sella-gonion plane. The facial depth was represented by sella-nasion and menton-gonion planes. The mandibular plane angle was represented by the intersection of the sella-nasion and menton-gonion planes.

Two-hour postprandial blood sugar determinations were carried out on 500 patients referred for periodontal care. The mean percentage of alveolar bone loss around the mandibular bicuspid teeth was established for each individual. The subjects were then grouped according to blood sugar levels and the mean alveolar bone loss was calculated. The group was separated into male and female sub-groups and data was computed for these segments as well as the total sample. The data was evaluated in a similar manner for those subjects between 40 and 49 years of age.

During the period from June, 1966, to September, 1967, 27 amphibians of two species, 446 reptiles of eight species, 561 birds of 81 species, and 4050 mammals of 26 species were examined for ectoparasites at the National Reactor Testing Station in southern Idaho. Of seven species of ticks collected, the predominant one was Ixodes kingi, found on mammals of 12 species. Next in abundance was Dermacentor andersoni found on birds of three species and mammals of 16 species. Haemaphysalis leporispalustris was taken from birds of 10 species and six spvecies of mammals. The development of the aortic isthmus, that region of the arch of the aorta between the left subclavian artery and the attachment of the ligamentum arteriosum, has received little attention. While the developmental history of the ductus arteriosus and foramen ovale has been well documented, as have the cardiac malformations associated with failure to complete this developmental sequence, little work has been done to define the normal sequence of isthmus development in its transition to an adult configuration in the postnatal period.
