All the observations suggest that phenobarbital and light may be of therapeutic value in controlling neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. In pregnancies in which one might anticipate increased bilirubin formation by the newborn baby, the use of phenobarbital during pregnancy and in the neonatal period, and exposure of the infant to light may provide methods other than exchange transfusion to reduce the concentration of serum bilirubin in the infant. Clinical trials should proceed cautiously, however, since phenobarbital is known to stimulate the activity of liver microsomal enzymes that metabolize, steroids, hormones, and other normal body substrates. Special Characteristics Of Adopted Children And Adoptive Parents As Seen In A Psychiatric Practice, Lillian C. Lindemann, Virginia A. Saunders

We have presented these characteristics of 22 adopted children and 20 sets of adoptive parents viewed as special by a team of child psychiatrists and a psychiatric social worker in a private setting. Material derived from psychological test protocols was included in the study. No attempt has been made to statistically validate the findings and the presentation has been descriptive. The reality of an abandonment experience would appear to be a major element in the anxiety experienced by the adopted child. This source of anxiety is the one element that distinguishes the emotionally disturbed adopted child from the emotionally disturbed …

Major attention was first focused on the problem of acute hemolytic anemia in the early 1950's, during the Korean War. Large numbers of American Negroes stationed in Korea developed this anemia after taking primaquine for treatment or prophylaxis of malaria. A study group was formed in Chicago under the direction of Alving; it was this group of investigators who contributed much of the early information which has led to our understanding of this type of anemia (Dern, et al, 1954; Dern, Beutler and Alving, 1954; Beutler, Dern, and Alving, 1954). [From the Summary] Rabbits immunized to benzylpenicillin G were found to develop circulating anti-benzylpenicillin antibodies. After immunization, challenge of these animals with intravenous aqueous penicillin was ineffective in eliciting fever. However, intravenous challenge with a penicillin-rabbit serum protein conjugate led to typical hypersensitivity fevers which were roughly correlated in magnitude with titers of benzylpenicillin antibody. Febrile tolerance developed after one or two challenges with the conjugate. This form of hypersensitivity appeared to be transferable with plasma of immunized donors to normal rabbits. Finally, blood leukocytes of immunized rabbits incubated with penicillin-protected conjugate and hypersensitive serum released pyrogen in vitro while …

The clinical explorations which have resulted from studies of mutant hemoglobin have allowed definition of a variety of syndromes whose manifestations require explanation in terms of the effects of molecular distortion on physiological processes. The discovery of various hemoglobinopathies has demonstrated that specific molecular defects may express themselves in various pathophysiological manifestations. More detailed pathophysiological studies of patients with hemoglobinopathies should be performed to gain a better understanding of the expression of molecular disease.

High Pre-Mating Liveweights Improve The Lambing Performance Of Merino Ewes, R J. Suiter

Analysis of lambing trials with Merino ewes has shown a highly significant association between pre-mating liveweight and lambing performance.

With May-June lambing ewes there was a 2.9 per cent, lambing increase for every extra 10 lb. liveweight; for July-August- September lambing ewes there was a 6.9 per cent, increase for every 10 lb. liveweight increase.

With the May-June lambing there was a critical weight below which twinning was negligible.

Later Mating Improves Lambing Results, R J. Suiter

Ovulation studies in Western Australia have indicated that increased lambing percentages in crossbred and Merino ewes could be expected from mating in February-April rather than December- January.

Such increases have been demonstrated in time of lambing trials with crossbred ewes, but had not been seen in Merino flocks until recently.

This report summarises the results of time of lambing trials with Merinos carried out at the Merredin and Wongan Hills Research Stations between 1963 and 1969.

It was the purpose of this study: (1) To compare the amount of vocalization produced by each child before the experiment with the amount of vocalization during and after the application of operant conditioning techniques. (2) To compare the variations in the vocalization produced by the children. (3) To explore the possibility of shaping those vocalizations into meaningful words. The study sought to verify the following statement: Utilization of operant conditioning principles will increase the amount and variety of vocalization in language delayed children.

Post-treatment discomfort following endodontic procedures can be caused by inflammation due to injudicious use of intracanal medicaments. Camphorated paramonochlorophenol, metacresyl acetate, and prednisolone in combination is advocated to reduce the inflammatory potential of the germicide and thus reduce the occurrence of post-operative pain. It is imperative that a medicament retain antimicrobial activity while reducing inflammatory potential.

This investigation was undertaken toward determining on an in vitro quantitative bactericidal versus bacteriostatic basis by use of the broth dilution test tube method whether camphorated paramonochlorophenol, metacresyl acetate, and prednisolone in combination retains antimicrobial activity comparable to selected other commonly used nonspecific germicides. …

Intravenous admixtures consisting of one or more drug formulations, diluted in a large volume of intravenous solution, are used extensively in current medical practice. Development of reliable methods to predict the compatibility of the admixture components is essential as a guide for their selection.

Because the majority of the reports published, to date, have used a visible change as the criterion for judging compatibility, it was the purpose of this study to demonstrate the use of spectrophotometric analysis to detect the occurrence of chemical interactions between two components of an intravenous admixture.

The possibility of drug incompatibilities is a matter of serious concern when administering two or more therapeutic agents. This is especially true in the case of parenteral administration when one must be aware not only of therapeutic interactions but also chemical and physical reactions that might occur.

In order to avoid incompatibilities, drug manufacturers have suggested that parenteral solutions be used immediately after reconstitution and that admixtures of parenteral products not be administered wherever possible (1,2).
