Process Of Producing Equine Viral Arteritis Vaccine And Product Thereof, John T. Bryans, William H. Mccollum, James C. Wilson, Elvis R. Doll

Veterinary Science Faculty Patents

A process is disclosed for producing an avirulent attenuated live virus vaccine for use in immunizing horses against equine viral arteritis and for simultaneously obviating the transmission of the disease from a vaccinated horse to a non-vaccinated horse. The invention also includes the product derived from practice of the process and typical examples of the efficacy of the product are disclosed.

The Myology Of Sceloporus C. Clarki Baird And Girard (Reptilia: Iguanidae), Diane Marie Secoy

Examination of the complete musculature of Sceloporus clarki clarki Baird and Girard and seven other species of Sceloporus revealed variation among species of Sceloporus and between Sceloporus and other iguanid lizards. The muscles in which the greatest variation was found were the intermandibularis group, the constrictor colli, the episterno-cleido-mastoideus, the episternohyoideus, the coracoid head of the triceps, the costocoracoid and the flexor tibialis externus. This study indicates: (1) Sceloporus is more closely allied to Crotaphytus than to the ground-dwelling iguanines; (2) the possibility of the basal stock of Sceloporus being arboreal, and (3) Sceloporus is a genus in the process …

Observations On Uric Acid Transport In Man, The Dalmatian And The Non-Dalmatian Dog, Howard Duncan, April S. Curtis

The urinary output of uric acid from the purebred Dalmatian is similar in amount to that in man. Also, this breed of dog has a higher plasma uric acid level than other dogs and, like man, this hyperuricemia is accompanied more frequently with renal and bladder lithiasis. Allopurinol is effective therapy in both man and dog. Study of the fate of uric acid in the Dalmatian shows that the liver does not oxidize the available uric acid completely although it is capable of doing so when liver homogenates are studied. Diagnosis And Treatment Of Gonorrhea, Paul A. Kvale

The various methods for diagnosis of gonorrhea are reviewed. Gram-stained smear of urethral exudate in the mate is appropriate, but for the female emphasis is placed on the use of culture on Thayer-Martin medium. Currently effective modalities of treatment are detailed, pointing out that higher doses of antibiotics are generally required for females with pelvic inflammatory disease than for males with acute gonococcal urethritis. The necessity for follow-up is also discussed.

An Improved Method Of Staining Paraffin-Embedded Bone Marrow Sections, Wanda Pusey, A. R. Villanueva

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Cytological detail is well demonstrated in an improved method of staining aspirated bone marrow sections embedded in paraffin. The tinctorial patterns of the stain resemble some of its predecessors; thus, cell counting and identification involve little difficulty. The method has proven reliable, reproducible and a valuable addition in the diagnosis of bone marrow disorders. It is a useful tool in research problems in which objectives are the study of the bone marrow.

Cardioregulatory Role Of The Abdominal Ganglion Of Aplysia Californica, George Maeda

An isolated heart-abdominal ganglion preparation of this mollusc was developed and used to study the cardioregulatory function of the ganglion and nerves. The heart was perfused with artificial sea water through an atrial cannula and the gastro-esophageal artery was catheterized for blood pressure monitoring. The presence and cardioregulatory effects of axons in the nerves was investigated by electrical stimulation. Fine-tipped glass microelectrodes inserted into ganglionic neurons were used to determine the relationship between the neuronal and cardiac activities.

Sub-Aversive Response Contingent Foot Shock As A Positive Reinforcer, Robert Lea Fulwiler

Forty-eight rats were divided into 8 groups; four were maintained under normal conditions and the other four under sensory deprivation and tested at o, 3, 6, and 9 days after condition institution. The response was placing the head through a hole in the operant chamber and the stimulus (0, 1.2, 4, or 12 Vac) was contingent upon the response. Analysis ot variance disclosed significant differences (p<.01) between the deprived and the non-deprived groups at days 6 and 9; and a significant interaction between deprivation condition and time of test. No differences were shown between the stimulus intensities indicating that the stimulus did not have a reinforcing effect.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the histopathological and clinical changes that occurred when a continuous supply of exogenous acid or base, at varying pH, was delivered adjacent to the gingival crest of the monkey. A related goal was to develop a monkey model system which would deliver test solutions continuously and atraumatically, to the experimental gingival sites.

Two young adult female monkeys had a perfusion apparatus attached to certain maxillary teeth so that test solutions were deposited atraumatically to the marginal gingival tissues. During the experimental periods the animals were kept in primate restraining chairs and fed …

Forty non-treated and twenty-two orthodontically treated cases were selected to determine the relationship of the bucco-lingual position of the mandibular first molar to occlusion and arch stability.

Plaster models and occlusal radiographs were obtained from all the cases. Anterior crowding, intermolar width, molar classification, and molar overhang relative to the basal bone were determined. The modified technique for occlusal radiographs used was found to result in radiographs which were more versatile and accurate when interchanged with the model measurements. The Effects Of Cs Habituation And Duration Of The Directional Modification Of The Cardiac Response In The Guinea Pig (Cavia Procellus), Ray Charles Larson

The present experiment examined the effects of CS habituation and two different levels of CS duration (60 versus 6 sec) on the directional modification of the conditioned cardiac response in the guinea pig. The results indicated that the only reaction to the CS, regardless of prior habituation or CS duration, was a decelerative conditioned HR response. However, habituation to a CS prior to classical aversive conditioning was found to attenuate the magnitude of the bradycardia CR that developed. The bradycardia CR was discussed in terms of being a cardiac component of the orienting response.

Maximal amounts of prodigiosin were synthesized in either minimal or complete medium after incubation of cultures at 27 C for 7 days. Biosynthesis of prodigiosin began earlier and the range of temperature for formation was greater in complete medium. No prodigiosin was formed in either medium when cultures were incubated at 38 C; however, after a shift to 27 C, pigmentation ensued, provided the period of incubation at 38 C was not longer than 36 hr for minimal medium or 48 hr for complete medium. Washed, nonpigmented cells grown in either medium at 38 C for 72 hr could synthesize …

The slope of the articular eminence was measured on the cephalograms of 71 subjects. The patients were divided Into three major categories on the basis of skeletal pattern, dental bite type, and Angle's classification. Skeletal pattern was determined by the mandibular plane angle (SNGoGn). High Angle and Low Angle cases were classified by two standard deviations from normal. Dental bite types were divided into Open Dental or Closed Dental according to the absence or presence of anterior disclusion, respectively. Angle's method of classification was also used to divide the sample Into Class I, II, or III malocclusions.

Barley, cornstarch, crested wheatgrass, glucose, molasses and solka floc were fermented with rumen fluid obtained from sheep that were adapted or unadapted to feed grade biuret (Kedlor) in their diet. Each rumen fluid and substrate combination was subjected to three nitrogen treatments: (1) control, (2) nitrogen added as feed grade biuret and (3) reagent grade biuret in a factoral arrangement of treatments. In vitro fermentations were terminated at 0, 12, 24, and 36 hours and the protein nitrogen insoluble in trichloroacetic acid (TCA) was determined.

Growth and enterotoxin production by Staphylococcus aureus strains, in the presence of different starter [2:1 (V/V) blend of AM₂:ML₈ strains of Streptococcus lactis] levels was investigated. Sterile, 10 per cent non-fat dry milk was inoculated with S. aureus strains capable of producing all types of enterotoxins, and reduced levels of starters; and was incubated at 32 C for 24 hours. The pH and S. aureus population were determined at 2 hour intervals until 8 hours and at 24 hours. The inhibitory response of lactic streptococci was studied by spot-tests on a lawn of S. aureus strains. …

The incorporation of 3-¹⁴C-,B-hydroxy-, B-methylglutaric acid (HMG) vii into carotenoids of excised etiolated maize shoots, crude cell free extracts and soluble extracts (20, 000 x g) of maize was investigated. HMG was effectively incorporated into carotenoids of excised shoots, crude extracts and soluble extracts. The excised shoots, crude extracts and soluble extracts incorporated 2-¹⁴C-mevalonic acid (MVA) into carotenoids as well. The results indicated the presence of HMG-CoA reductase in the plant as well as an HMG activating enzyme. The soluble extract showed a pH optimum of 7. 0 for incorporation of HMG into …

Twelve groups of weanling rats were fed with diets prepared by diluting the basal diet with 0 to 75 percent sucrose for 46 days and their antibody response was measured on the 28th, 40th and 46th day using Salmonella pullorum as the antigen.
