Some Mechanisms Of Supraventricular Tachycardia, Gordon Moe

Reciprocal rhythm was proposed about 30 years ago by Barker, Wilson, and Johnston as a probable mechanism for the explanation of supraventricular tachycardia. They proposed, on the basis of approximately 100 clinical records at the University of Michigan Hospital, that reentry through the A-V node, better known as reciprocal tachycardia, would account for approximately 40% of their cases. They also postulated that reentry through the S-A node might account for another 40%, and that 20% were probably due to ectopic foci. Since its introduction some twenty years ago the Papanicolaou technique for cervical-vaginal cytology has had a tremendous impact on the detection of precancerous lesions and in situ cancer in the female genital tract. It has forced the clinician and pathologist to study the "early lesions" of cancer, particularly in the female genital tract and has brought about a better understanding of their biology. Cytology has over the years been extended to other areas, particularly the respiratory tract. I would first like to discuss this enzyme, reviewing some of its chemistry, its clinical value and the pitfalls and problems associated with the routine tests. Then I would like to tell about some work in which we have been involved that we hope will increase the diagnostic value of this enzyme and perhaps point the way to advances in clinical enzymology in other areas.

Early identification of children with reading and learning problems seems imperative. By using early identification predictors, a high risk group of children with possible reading problems could be located. This would facilitate placement and appropriate educational strategies for this group of children. By proper placement and planning, educators then would be able to set up remedial and/or preventive programs for these children before the pattern of unsuccessful attempts and improper training becomes irreversible. The scope of toxicology, therefore, may extend from the study of a single element such as lead to a complex, chemically uncharacterized substance such as snake venom; from an overdose of heroin to the effects of long-term exposure to low levels of pesticides on anticonvulsant therapy. For the purpose of this discussion, we shall narrow the limits of the broad field of toxicology considerably, but it is important to be aware of the breadth and depth to which toxicology may at times extend.

The diurnal rhythm of adrenal ascorbic acid (DAR) displays an inverse relationship to the diurnal rhythm of circulating levels of plasma corticosteroids. Alloxan monohydrate, 175 mg/kg body weight was given subcutaneously to albino rats to determine the effect of the diabetic state on the DAR. A total of 200 female albino rats were divided into two study groups. Study Group I was composed of 150 animals divided into populations of 15, each including 3 controls. An Investigation Of The Ability To Predict The Frequency Of Occurrence Of Words Between Normal And Articulatory Defective College-Age Individuals, William Joseph Divers Iii

The purpose of this study was to see if normal speakers and misarticulators differentially predict the frequency of occurrence of 80 words containing one or more of the five most frequently misarticulated speech sounds. The 80 words were selected from a study by Ausherman and Black. The subjects were 20 college-age individuals, ten with normal articulation and ten with articulation disorders. There were five males and females in each group.

All subjects predicted the frequency of occurrence of 80 words on the basis of an eight-point scale. Error scores were computed, used as a criterion measure, and statistically analyzed and …

The Residual Effects Of Long-Term Amphetamine Intoxication On Avoidance Learning And Retention In Rats, Larry Paul Liberty

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of chronic long-term amphetamine intoxication on active avoidance learning and retention in rats. The two experiments in the study were designed to investigate whether the effects noted during acute administration of the drug would be present at intervals of 2, 8 and 14 days after cessation of a chronic drug treatment. Experiment 1 indicated that rats trained 40 minutes after injection of the drug acquired the active avoidance task at a significantly faster rate than rats injected with saline, but their retention levels were the same.
