Menstrual Cycle As Focus Of Study And Self-Reports Of Moods And Behaviors, Paula Englander-Golden, Mary R. Whitmore, Richard A. Dienstbier Jan 1978

Menstrual Cycle As Focus Of Study And Self-Reports Of Moods And Behaviors, Paula Englander-Golden, Mary R. Whitmore, Richard A. Dienstbier

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Retrospective questionnaires show cyclical variations in moods and behaviors across the menstrual cycle. However, results obtained from daily mood questionnaires are inconsistent. In the present study, which ran for 11 weeks, self-report measures of menstrual symptomatology, using the 8-factor Moos (1968, 1969 a, c) Menstrual Distress Questionnaire (MDQ), were investigated. The MDQ was administered under conditions that made the menstrual cycle a salient (retrospective questionnaire) or not a salient (daily questionnaire) part of the study. The study included women who were taking and not taking oral contraceptives. A 2 × 3 analysis of variance (with the two groups of women …

Immunocytochemistry At The Electron-Microscopic Level, David S. Papermaster Jan 1978

Immunocytochemistry At The Electron-Microscopic Level, David S. Papermaster

UCHC Articles - Research

Since the early slxtles, a number of reports have been published concerning immunocytochemical techniques for the detection of intracellular constituents at the electron microscope level. The· initial studies were made possible by the introduction by Singer of ferritin-tagged antibodies which could be visualized in the electron microscope. From all the procedures described later, immunocytochemical methods at the electron microscope can be classified into two main categories: 1) preembedding staining and 2) postembedding staining techniques.

Appropriate Antibiotic Therapy For Urinary Tract Infections, Sheldon M. Markowitz Jan 1978

Appropriate Antibiotic Therapy For Urinary Tract Infections, Sheldon M. Markowitz

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

It was stated years ago that physicians pour medicines about which they know little, for diseases about which they know less, into human beings about whom they know nothing. Although as a prophet this wag may have overstated the case as it concerns the therapy of urinary tract infections (UTI), the character of contemporary infectious diseases is, in part, due to the use and abuse of anti-infective agents. One has only to look at the rising incidence of gram-negative bacteremia and the emergence of multiple antibiotic-resistant organisms over the past several decades to appreciate the impact physicians have made with …

Patterns Of Prehistoric Epidemiology And Human Paleopathology, Mahmoud Y. El-Najjar Jan 1978

Patterns Of Prehistoric Epidemiology And Human Paleopathology, Mahmoud Y. El-Najjar

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Human paleopathologists are interested in the visible marks of diagnosable disease that reflect various aspects of human biocultural interaction. Whether infectious, nutritional, or a combination of both, pathological characteristics in the dry bone provide some insight into the health of past human populations. Paleoepidemiology and human paleopathology are important parts of ecology in that they deal directly with a major aspect of man's relationship to his environment. The significance of this relationship has, to a large extent, been neglected by human skeletal biologists. The purpose of this study is to examine one of the most important aspects of human biocultural …

Testicular Carcinomas And Carcinoma Of The Prostate, Paul F. Schellhammer Jan 1978

Testicular Carcinomas And Carcinoma Of The Prostate, Paul F. Schellhammer

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Testicular neoplasms are relatively rare with approximately two new cases per 100,000 male population occurring per year. The peak occurrence is between the ages of 20 and 40. Because of their highly malignant characteristics testicular neoplasms must be treated aggressively if cure is to be achieved.

Pre-Columbian Tuberculosis: An Epidemiological Approach, Jane E. Buikstra, Della C. Cook Jan 1978

Pre-Columbian Tuberculosis: An Epidemiological Approach, Jane E. Buikstra, Della C. Cook

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In this study we have combined both biological and cultural data in the investigation of resorptive pathology in Woodland and Mississippian skeletal series from west-central Illinois. Information concerning the types of lesions and their distribution confirms the presence of a previously unknown disease in Mississippian populations. Adults and adolescents from Yokem and Schild Mississippian components clearly display cystic vertebral pathology, which in association with other peripheral osseous lesions distinguishes them from earlier groups. This idea is supported indirectly by evidence from both infants and children of the Schild sample.

Attitudes Of Doctor Of Pharmacy Students Toward The Application Of Social And Administrative Pharmacy In Clinical Practice, C. Anderson Johnson, J. Lyle Bootman

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Over the past decade, dramatic changes have occurred in the education of pharmacists. A significant factor in this change has been the introduction of clinical pharmacy. The emerging role of the clinical pharmacist has forced educators to take a second look at the relevance of the pharmacy curriculum. In fact, many of the pharmacy disciplines have re-oriented their specific knowledge objectives to meet the needs of today's clinical practitioners.

Porotic Hyperostosis In The Eastern Mediterranean, J. Lawrence Angel Jan 1978

Porotic Hyperostosis In The Eastern Mediterranean, J. Lawrence Angel

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Porotic hyperostosis is bone expansion caused by hypertrophy of blood-forming marrow. It usually affects the skull diploë in adults and the long bones, face, skull vault, and sometimes the trunk in children, often with some thinning and porosity in the cortex and even the formation of a double cortex (bone-in-bone) in severe infections. Excess formation of red cells in hematogenous marrow can come from sicklemia or thalassemia (especially in the homozygous form), from other hemolytic anemias including unusual blood defects like spherocytosis, and from iron deficiency anemia. Presumably hookworm, amebiasis and other dysenteries, endemic malaria, and even high-altitude anoxia can …

Paleoepidemiology Of Infectious Disease In The Dickson Mounds Population, John Lallo, George J. Armelagos, Jerome C. Rose Jan 1978

Paleoepidemiology Of Infectious Disease In The Dickson Mounds Population, John Lallo, George J. Armelagos, Jerome C. Rose

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The major focus of paleopathology has been the delimiting of disease in time and space. Information about the history of specific diseases is the objective of many of these studies. While the chronological and geographical dimensions of paleopathology contribute significantly to our knowledge of disease, there are limits to this approach, which often fails to consider the interaction of biology and culture in the disease of prehistoric populations.

Yawslike Disease Porcesses In A Louisiana Shell Mound Population, Louise M. Robbins Jan 1978

Yawslike Disease Porcesses In A Louisiana Shell Mound Population, Louise M. Robbins

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Human skeletal remains have been recovered from prehistoric and early historic sites in Louisiana with some degree of regularity for the past 75 years and on an irregular basis for the last 300 years. During his explorations of aboriginal sites throughout the Lower Mississippi River Valley, Moore made a special effort to collect skeletal specimens for shipment to the US National Museum at the Smithsonian Institution. A less well-known fact is that he also collected pathological specimens for shipment to the Army Medical Museum at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC. An unfortunate aspect of the Moore recovery technique, however, …

Paleoepidemiology Of Degerative Joint Disease, Robert D. Jurmain Jan 1978

Paleoepidemiology Of Degerative Joint Disease, Robert D. Jurmain

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In order to contribute significantly to the description and understanding of human disease, paleoepidemiology must first recognize requirements which epidemiologists have long considered essential: 1) that the populations sampled are relevant to a set of specific hypotheses concerning a particular set of diseases: 2) that an adequate sample is employed to accurately represent the whole population: and 3) that wherever possible, sex and age parameters are accurately controlled. Given a specific set of hypotheses worthy of being tested, paleoepidemiology can be used not only to describe the distribution of significant human diseases, but also to help untangle and explain their …

Some Basic Facts About Primary Blowflies, N Monzu Jan 1978

Some Basic Facts About Primary Blowflies, N Monzu

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Research has begun on blowfly species attacking sheep in Western Australia. Already this research has indicated the importance of a species in Western Australia which is not a problem in the Eastern States.

Future management of sheep flocks to minimise fly strike may require recognition of the differences between blowfly species. This article gives a description of the primary species - those which can initiate strikes.

Nutrition Knowledge, Attitudes, And Practices Of Science, Home Economics, And Health Teachers In Secondary Schools In West Virginia, Jane Seaman Walaszczyk Jan 1978

Nutrition Knowledge, Attitudes, And Practices Of Science, Home Economics, And Health Teachers In Secondary Schools In West Virginia, Jane Seaman Walaszczyk

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The quality of nutrition education programs is seriously being considered today. Numerous concerns have led to the investigation of underlying problems associated with ineffective nutrition education programs. The need for a nutrition component to be integrated in all educational systems became apparent immediately following the 1969 National Nutrition Survey. West Virginia was one of ten states to be surveyed and results clearly indicated that the nutritional status of the individuals under consideration was less than adequate. Vitamins A and C and iron were low in many diets among various age groups (Schaefer, 1970). Thus it was recognized that nutrition education …

A Pilot Study Of A Sex Education Program In A Sheltered Workshop Using A Cognitive-Behavioral Model Based On Rational Emotive Therapy, Jacqueline A. Rieck, Thomas E. Frederick Jan 1978

A Pilot Study Of A Sex Education Program In A Sheltered Workshop Using A Cognitive-Behavioral Model Based On Rational Emotive Therapy, Jacqueline A. Rieck, Thomas E. Frederick

Masters Theses

This pilot study was developed to teach people with mental retardation about their own sexuality, appropriate community behaviors, and to develop within them a basic sense of responsibility for their own actions. Problems in social/sexual behaviors have been consistently quoted as reasons for high recidivism rates, as well as difficulties in community living, vocational placement, and other generalized stereotypes about mental retardation. Often the public remains uninformed about, does not recognize, and/or feels that sexual rights for people with any mental differences should not exist. Additionally, when any form of sexuality was expressed by such people it resulted in shock …

Early Sibling Relationships, Patricia Mccook Rager Jan 1978

Early Sibling Relationships, Patricia Mccook Rager

Theses and Dissertations

Most of the richness and beauty of life is derived from the close relationship that each individual has with a small number of other human beings--mother, father, brother, sister, husband, wife, son, daughter, and a small cadre of close friends. With each person in this small group, the individual has a uniquely close attachment or bond. Much of the joy and sorrow of life revolves around attachments or affectional relationships--making them, breaking them, preparing for them, and adjusting to their loss.

This study dealt with one of those special attachments, the relationship a child formed with his newborn brother or …
