A Study Of The Environmental Aspects Of Schistosomiasis In Libya, Abubaker I. Swehli
A Study Of The Environmental Aspects Of Schistosomiasis In Libya, Abubaker I. Swehli
Dissertations
Schistosomiasis is a serious disease in humans. Two species of schistosome, Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma haematobium, organisms that cause the disease, parasitize humans in Libya. Schistosomes require aquatic snails in their life cycle. The purpose of this study was to investigate the environmental and the host relationships of the disease in the three regions of Libya where the disease is found. These relationships include:
1) Analyses of the physical-chemical characteristics of the aquatic habitat.
2) Collection of snails to determine: a) the kind of snail species and th e ir abundance; and b) the cercarial infestation rates.
3) Infection rates …
A Histopathological Assessment Of The Effects Of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes On The Ears Of Chinese Hamsters, Karen Ailsworth
A Histopathological Assessment Of The Effects Of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes On The Ears Of Chinese Hamsters, Karen Ailsworth
Masters Theses
Research has produced evidence associating progressive, bilateral, sensorineural hearing loss with diabetes mellitus in human and animal subjects. The microangiopathy which is presumably the cause of hearing loss appears similar to the microangiopathy leading to retinal and renal atrophy.
In the present study the temporal bones of six streptozotocininduced diabetic Chinese hamsters and six nondiabetic Chinese hamsters were histologically processed. Sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin were assessed for total auditory and vestibular otopathology and revealed no statistically significant differences between the two groups. Sections stained with periodic acid-Schiff's were evaluated for vascular basement membrane changes and revealed no statistically …

The Effect Of Orally Administered Butylated Hydroxytoluene On Herpes Simplex Keratitis, Donald Carson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Some studies have reported in vitro inactivation of membrane enveloped viruses by Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). This study investigates the effect of orally administered BHT on primary infections of Herpes simplex virus (HSV) using rabbit corneas as the assay system.
Assigned levels of BHT were incorporated into the diet of New Zealand White rabbits with HSV-1 McKrae strain on the corneal surface of the eyes. The degree of infection was measured by a subjective assay. Rabbits receiving BHT in their diet consistently experienced lower levels of infection. The interpretation of this data is that orally administered BHT can be an effective …

High Resolution Two Dimensional Electrophoresis Of Soluble Proteins In Human Spermatozoa, Hsing-Ying Liu
High Resolution Two Dimensional Electrophoresis Of Soluble Proteins In Human Spermatozoa, Hsing-Ying Liu
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
The evaluation of human semen is very important for diagnosis of male infertility. Combined with the analysis of seminal plasma, a comprehensive biochemical screening of human spermatozoan proteins may be of assistance in providing qualitative and quantitative information to the physician to assist with evaluation.
In this study, human spermatozoa were ruptured by sonication. The soluble spermatozoan proteins were separated from the cellular debris by centrifugation and then analyzed in dissociated forms by two dimensional electrophoresis. The separated proteins were visualized by a silver stain method.
It has been shown that these combined techniques can resolve- four to five hundred …
The Effects Of Triethyltin Bromide On Red Cell And Brain Cyclic Amp-Dependent Protein Kinases, Kevin R. Siebenlist, Fumito Taketa
The Effects Of Triethyltin Bromide On Red Cell And Brain Cyclic Amp-Dependent Protein Kinases, Kevin R. Siebenlist, Fumito Taketa
Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Triethyltin bromide activates the cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinases of human red cell membranes and of bovine brain. Additions of 25-500 microM triethyltin to red cell ghosts resulted in enhanced phosphorylation of ghost proteins. When added to partially purified cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinases from red cell ghosts or bovine brain, stimulation of the phosphorylation of calf thymus histone was observed. The enhancement of kinase activity was due to release of catalytic subunits from the intact protein kinase. Brief exposure of the partially purified enzymes to triethyltin, followed by DE52 chromatography, resulted in elution profiles for regulatory and catalytic subunits that were …
Identification Of Four Complementary Rna Species In Akabane Virus-Infected Cells, Asit K. Pattnaik, G. Abraham
Identification Of Four Complementary Rna Species In Akabane Virus-Infected Cells, Asit K. Pattnaik, G. Abraham
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
The analysis of RNA extracted from purified Akabane virus demonstrated the presence of three size classes of single-stranded RNAs with sedimentation coefficients of 31S (large, L), 26S (medium, M), and 13S (small, S). Molecular weights of these RNA species were estimated to be 2.15 x 106,1.5 X 106, and 0.48 x 106 for the L, M, and S RNAs, respectively. Hybridization analysis involving viral genomic RNA and RNA from virus-infected cells resulted in the identification of four virus-specific cRNA species in infected cells. These cRNAs were found to be nonpolyadenylated by their inability to bind …
The Role Of Erythropoietin In The Anemia Of Chronic Renal Failure, N. Kevin Krane
The Role Of Erythropoietin In The Anemia Of Chronic Renal Failure, N. Kevin Krane
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The major factors responsible for the anemia of chronic renal failure are decreased erythropoietin (Ep) production, the presence of inhibitors of erythropoiesis, blood loss, and hemolysis. Ep, which is produced in the kidney, probably exerts its effect on the colony-forming units of the erythrocyte. Ep levels fall with worsening renal function (creatinine clearances in the range of 2-40 ml/min). but they rise to their highest levels in the immediate predialysis period, probably due to severe ischemia of both renal and extrarenal production sites. When patients are begun on hemodialysis, Ep levels fall, and the hematocrit rises. Erythropoietin therapy in the …

Autoregulation Of Cortical Blood Flow In Response To Phenylephrine Induced Hypertension In The Normocapnic And Hypercapnic Cat, Forrest Ritland
Autoregulation Of Cortical Blood Flow In Response To Phenylephrine Induced Hypertension In The Normocapnic And Hypercapnic Cat, Forrest Ritland
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this research was to determine the degree of autoregulation of cortical blood flow in the cat, and to evaluate the usefulness of the heated thermocouple technique for measurement of local cortical blood flow. We determined the relationship between local flow and voltage output from our thermoelectric flow probe by in vitro experiments with an artificial kidney. We measured local cortical blood flow in 17 cats during episodes of phenylephrine-induced hypertension, under conditions of normocapnia and, in some cases, hypercapnia. Arterial blood pressure and voltage output from the flow probe thermocouples were recorded continuously with a Physiograph-six monitor. …

Clients' verbatim written statements and their reactions to a standard problem checklist at the time of intake provided the data base …
An Investigation Of The Relationship Of Life Events And Self Concept To Depression In A Psychiatric Inpatient-Adolescent Population, David L. Harris
An Investigation Of The Relationship Of Life Events And Self Concept To Depression In A Psychiatric Inpatient-Adolescent Population, David L. Harris
Dissertations
In the present investigation, a group of mildly depressed adolescent inpatients was compared with a moderately to severely depressed sample on measures of self-concept and life events. The expected differences between the groups were hypothesized on the basis of current theoretical and clinical considerations emphasized in the literature. Previous research has implicated the magnitude of readjustment required by significant life experiences and self concept with depression.
Seventy-four subjects participated and were assigned to one of two groups by dichotomizing scores on the Beck Depression Inventory. The relationships of scores on the Tennessee Self Concept Scale, Life Event History, and Minnesota …

A Reliability Study Of The Peer Nomination Inventory Of Depression When Used By Adults In Determining The Psychological Condition Of Depression In Children, Jeffrey R. Glindmeyer
Dissertations
In the present investigation, the reliability of a modified version of an inventory developed to assess the psychological condition of depression in children was undertaken. The Peer Nomination Inventory of Depression (PNID), an instrument designed to assess depression in children through having peers rate each other on a number of items, was modified to be used by adult raters for this same purpose. Staff members, including therapists, educators, and direct care professionals at the RiverView Hospital for Children, a psychiatric hospital in Middletown, Connecticut, completed ratings on eight boys ranging in age from seven to thirteen years of age. The …

Recombinant Immune Interferon Increases Immunoglobulin G Fc Receptors On Cultured Human Mononuclear Phagocytes, Paul M. Guyre, Peter M. Morganelli, Renee Miller
Recombinant Immune Interferon Increases Immunoglobulin G Fc Receptors On Cultured Human Mononuclear Phagocytes, Paul M. Guyre, Peter M. Morganelli, Renee Miller
Dartmouth Scholarship
Although recent studies suggest that interferons can increase the number of IgG Fc receptor (FcR gamma) sites on mouse macrophages, direct assessment of similar effects on human mononuclear phagocytes is lacking. We therefore measured the specific binding of 125I- and fluorescein-labeled IgG1 to human monocytes and leukemic cell lines after culture in vitro with highly purified human interferons. We report that natural and recombinant human gamma-interferon causes a dramatic (nearly 10-fold) increase in the number of FcR gamma on normal human monocytes and on the human cell lines HL-60 and U-937. Alpha and beta-interferons cause a modest but significant increase …

Experience With Biosynthetic Human Insulin In Diabetes, Davida F. Kruger, Fred W. Whitehouse, Dorothy M. Kahkonen, Jean O. Partamian, J. David Fachnie, José Goldman, David Leach
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Thirty diabetic patients new to insulin were entered in an open label prospective study of biosynthetic human insulin (BHI). All patients experienced symptomatic control of diabetes attributable to dietary and BHI insulin therapy. Detailed six-month evaluation data were reviewed in 19 patients. A significant drop in fasting plasma glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin was noted at two months, and a further modest decrease occurred at six months. E. coli polypeptide antibodies were unchanged from baseline at six months, indicating that no bacterial protein contamination of BHI occurred. Percent binding of serum antibodies to human insulin measured in 19 patients at baseline …
