Enteric-Coated Fenoprofen In Large-Joint Osteoarthritis, Gilbert B. Bluhm, Harris H. Macilwain, Walter W. Offen
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Enteric-coated fenoprofen was compared with standard fenoprofen (Nalfon, Dista, Indianapolis, IN) in a randomized, double-blind, parallel, three-month trial of 113 outpatients (mean age, 64 years) with large-joint osteoarthritis. A previous study showed that enteric coating of fenoprofen reduces gastrointestinal microbleeding and may offer a safety advantage. Both treatments provided statistically significant improvement in pain measures (tenderness on pressure, pain at rest, pain with weight-bearing activity, and pain on passive motion). Adverse experiences were similar with both treatments and of an expected type, severity, and incidence for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Enteric-coated fenoprofen was found to be as effective and safe as …

The Social Class And Mental Illness Correlation: Implications Of The Research For Policy And Practice, Christopher G. Hudson
The Social Class And Mental Illness Correlation: Implications Of The Research For Policy And Practice, Christopher G. Hudson
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Ongoing efforts to unravel the causal issues involved in the correlation between socioeconomic status and mental illness suggest that the hypothesis of a recursive or interactive relationship may be the most tenable, at least with the psychoses. Implications of this research are explored, with particular attention paid to the mental health costs of economic policies, the principles with which states allocate mental health resources, and the use of this knowledge-base in service planning.

Fibrinogen was isolated from the plasma of a 25-year-old female with a history of mild bleeding and several recent moderate to severe hemorrhagic episodes. Coagulability with thrombin approached 100% and varied directly with the time of incubation with the enzyme. High- performance liquid chromatography analysis of thrombin-induced fibrinopeptide release demonstrated retarded fibrinopeptide A (FPA) and fibrinopeptide B (FPB) release and the presence of an abnormal A peptide (FPA) amounting to 50% of the total. The same biochemical abnormalities were found in her asymptomatic father. Amino acid analysis and carboxypeptidase digestion of FPA demonstrated the substitution of His for Arg at …
Parentage Analysis With Genetic Markers In Natural Populations I The Expected Proportion Of Offspring With Unambiguous Paternity, R Chakraborty, T R Meagher, P E Smouse
Parentage Analysis With Genetic Markers In Natural Populations I The Expected Proportion Of Offspring With Unambiguous Paternity, R Chakraborty, T R Meagher, P E Smouse
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Recent studies indicate that polymorphic genetic markers are potentially helpful in resolving genealogical relationships among individuals in a natural population. Genetic data provide opportunities for paternity exclusion when genotypic incompatibilities are observed among individuals, and the present investigation examines the resolving power of genetic markers in unambiguous positive determination of paternity. Under the assumption that the mother for each offspring in a population is unambiguously known, an analytical expression for the fraction of males excluded from paternity is derived for the case where males and females may be derived from two different gene pools. This theoretical formulation can also be …

Laminin, a basement membrane glycoprotein promotes both cell attachment and neurite outgrowth. Separate domains on laminin elicit these responses, suggesting that distinct receptors occur on the surface of cells. NG108-15 neuroblastoma-glioma cells rapidly extend long processes in the presence of laminin. We report here that 125I-labeled laminin specifically binds to these cells and to three membrane proteins of 67, 110, and 180 kDa. These proteins were isolated by affinity chromatography on laminin-Sepharose. The 67-kDa protein reacted with antibody to the previously characterized receptor for cell attachment to laminin. Antibodies to the 110-kDa and 180-kDa bands demonstrated that the 110-kDa protein …

Human light chain genes are used in a κ before λ order. Accompanying this hierarchy is the rearrangement of a κ-deleting element (Kde) which eliminates the kappa locus before λ gene rearrangement. In approximately 60% of rearrangements the Kde recombines at a conserved heptamer within the Jκ-Cκ intron. We demonstrated that aberrant V/J rearrangements possessing apparent "N" nucleotides existed 5' to the Jκ-Kde rearrangements. This suggests that the Kde may selectively eliminate nonfunctional V/J alleles. A κ-producing cell that displayed the unusual finding of λ gene rearrangement demonstrated a rearranged Kde. This rearrangement was a …

Analysis Of The Virulence Of Streptococcus Mutans Serotype C Gtfa Mutants In The Rat Model System, Raul G. Barletta, Suzanne M. Michalek, Roy Curtis Iii
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
The Streptococcus mutans serotype c gtfA gene encodes a 55-kilodalton protein which catalyzes the synthesis of a small glucan (1.5 kilodaltons) from sucrose (J. P. Robeson, R. G. Barletta, and R. Curtiss III, J. Bacteriol. 153:211-221, 1983). To investigate the role of the GtfA enzyme in virulence, we constructed S. mutans gtfA mutants from three cariogenic serotype c strains. A plasmid that carried an erythromycin resistance determinant and an internal fragment of the gtfA gene but that was unable to replicate in streptococci was used to transform S. mutans. The erythromycin-resistant transformants carried a partial duplication of the internal …

Radiation And Society, Rosalyn S. Yalow
Radiation And Society, Rosalyn S. Yalow
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
We live in a world in which the perception of reality is too often confused with reality and there are few fields in which more confusion exists than in the popular perception of the hazards of exposure to low-level radiation and low-level radioactive wastes. Much of the fear of radiation has been generated by the association of radiation and radioactivity with nuclear explosions and nuclear war. So phobic is the fear that, in the United States at least, the old dream of "Atoms for Peace," including the use of nuclear reactors for power production and even the use of radioactive …

Why is it that so little is known about PMS? First of all, there is no agreement on what PMS is. If investigators are referring to different sets of symptoms, how can studies be comparable? In fact, they are not. Not only are the symptoms different, but the timing of symptoms is different, Some studies describe symptoms that occur 7 to 10 days before the onset of menses, while others include symptoms that begin 14 days before the onset of menses and continue for 7 days after onset. This definition suggests that women may have PMS-related symptoms during 21 days …

Cloning And Sequencing Of The Genes For Shiga Toxin From Shigella Dysenteriae Type 1, Nancy A. Strockbine, Matthew Jackson, Lawrence Sung, Randall Holmes, Alison D. O'Brien
United States Public Health Resources
The structural genes for Shiga toxin, designated stx A and stx B, were cloned from Shigella dysenteriae type 1 3818T, and a nucleotide sequence analysis was performed. Both stx A and stx B were present on a single transcriptional unit, with stx A preceding stx B. The molecular weight calculated for the processed A subunit was 32,225, while the molecular weight of the processed B subunit was 7,691. Comparison of the nucleotide sequences for Shiga toxin and Shiga-like toxin I (SLT-I) from Escherichia coli revealed that the genes for Shiga toxin and SLT-I were greater than 99% homologous; three nucleotide …

At American University in Washington, D.C., on November 20, 1973, Julius Stone presented the tenth annual Mooers Lecture, entitled, "Knowledge, Survival, and the Duties of Science."' The central question and thesis that he propounded could and, indeed, should be raised anew today; they form the very core of the province and function of law, science, and medicine. In our brave new world they point to the leeways of choice and patterns of discourse that exist in grappling with the central issue of social responsibility in scientific inquiry. Perhaps they will assist in forging a consensus opinion for a subsequent course …

The fusion of large unilamellar phosphatidylserine liposomes (PS LUV) induced by La3+ has been monitored using the 1-aminoapthalene-3,6,8-trisulfonic acid/p-xylenebis(pyridinium bromide) (ANTS/DPX) fluorescence assay for the mixing of aqueous contents. The fusion event is extensive and nonleaky, with up to 95% mixing of contents in the fused liposomes. However, addition of excess EDTA leads to disruption of the fusion products in a way that implies the existence of metastable intermembrane contact sites. The maximal fusion activity occurs between 10 and 100 microM La3+ and fusion can be terminated rapidly, without loss of contents, by the addition of excess La3+, e.g., 1 …

Conduct Disorder And Cognitive Functioning: Testing Three Causal Hypotheses, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, David Shaffer, Patricia O'Connor, Stephanie Portnoy
Publications and Research
Studied the relation between cognitive functioning, as evidenced by IQ and achievement test performance, and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) categories of conduct disturbance, using data from Black adolescents who were members of collaborative perinatal project from birth to age 7 yrs. At age 17 yrs, Ss and their parents were administered a battery of instruments that included standardized psychiatric diagnostic interviews as part of a call-back study. Analyses were compatible with the hypothesis that deficiencies in cognitive functioning are causally related to adolescent conduct disorder as defined by DSM—III. Results suggest that the relation of cognitive …
