International Arab Journal of Dentistry

Rehabilitating the maxilla in the patient who has had surgical resection for mucormycosis poses a distinctive set of anatomical, surgical, and prosthetic challenges. The extensive maxillary bone loss after aggressive debridement often makes traditional implant-supported prosthetic options impossible. In these circumstances, zygomatic implants have proven to be a predictable, graftless solution, especially in patients with extremely atrophic maxillae. Where the bone loss is severe, the quad zygoma procedure—two implants for each zygomatic arch—is possible to support full arch rehabilitation with a fixed prosthesis. This report presents the successful rehabilitation of oral function and appearance in a patient with post-mucormycosis edentulous …

Background: Genetic ancestry is an important factor to account for in DNA methylation studies because genetic variation influences DNA methylation patterns. One approach uses principal components (PCs) calculated from CpG sites that overlap with common SNPs to adjust for ancestry when genotyping data is not available. However, this method does not remove technical and biological variations, such as sex and age, prior to calculating the PCs. The first PC is therefore often associated with factors other than ancestry.

Methods: We developed and adapted the adapted EpiAnceR+ approach, which includes (1) residualizing the CpG data overlapping with common SNPs for control …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The immune system functions as a well-coordinated defense mechanism, protecting the host from both external pathogens and internal threats. Cancer cells often display surface antigens that the immune system can recognize as foreign, potentially triggering an immune response. However, many cancer cells evade detection by downregulating or completely losing these surface antigens. The immune system relies on the expression of surface antigens and human leukocyte antigens (HLA) to identify and target tumor cells. One key method by which tumor cells evade natural killer (NK) cells involves alterations in HLA antigens. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is known to cause various changes …

The quest to develop and improve neuromodulatory therapies for treatment-resistant psychiatric disorders has been fueled by the discovery of intracranial neural biomarkers of symptom dimensions. These neural correlates shed light on the underlying neurophysiology of the disorder and may even be useful in guiding therapy delivery. This systematic review summarizes recent efforts in this field relating neural activity to behavior and symptomatology. For years, the majority of these neurobehavioral relationships had been studied in the hospital or clinic environment. Recent technological advances in implanted neuromodulation devices that permit not only stimulation, but also intracranial neural recording have enabled this research …

We report that in humans, mice, fruit flies, and worms, the ribosomal RNAs and the transcribed spacers of 45S are densely packed with organism-specific sequence motifs that are primarily shared with nervous system genes. The human ribosomal RNAs and 45S spacers contain 1,723 such motifs. Specific combinations of these motifs are predominantly found in 3,430 human nervous system genes, of which 1,046 are genes associated with brain disorders, including autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia. The sequences of the 1,723 motifs and their locations in the introns and exons of nervous system genes are unique to primates. Experimental evidence indicates that …
